A suggestion for future episodes (or maybe you can recommend one where you discuss this): how to treat kids that have a lot of jargon...and how to talk to parents about why kids do long strings of jargon and how to respond to it.

does anybody have experience with trilingual three year olds.....I am trying (as a grandma) to help my grandson and listen to this wonderful lady all the time; she is amazing. I just wondered if anyone here has had a trilingual late developer. Thanks in advance and thanks doc because me and my grandson have so much fun now with toys and directions and all the rest; your have made my time with him, the best ever.

I would say that was my Mom and Dad. But they didn't face any issues because I didn't have any speech and language delays. Bilingualism or trilingualism as such doesn't cause any delays or confuse kids. But in case a kid has delays, he/she will have difficulties communicating in both or all three languages. Where they are having issues is basically in acquiring and mastering all the prelinguistic skills that toddlers learn before they learn to communicate in any language.

Mom granddaughter is delayed in both Spanish and English. Some therapists has said one could be confusing to her, or any child.

When mine got stuck signing more than talking, I would say the word they signed and give a pause. Don’t automatically give them what they asked for. Say the word and sign it back to them. “ You want more?” Then hold the treat and ask them can you say more? M M more …. Then pause. Food was the thing that helped them get out of their comfort zone of just signing.

Thank you so much for this video. I've quite a few tips to try out with my daughter. Please how do I help my daughter who has very few words like "wow" and "shoe" but rarely uses them and hums every now and then? How can I help her stop humming?
@CCteamBlue
@CCteamBlue Год назад
Mom of five here. Not a pro by any means but I would encourage the humming child to open their mouth and stick out their tongue and hum. Show them how it makes different sounds. Make it a fun silly game. Hum a song like that. Then transition that to phonic sounds lalalala It might help them to make the mind body connection.

Just a question, I would've watched this all the way through but I have very fussy children lol So what does it mean if my son is 3 and knows what everything means. He even sounds like he knows words when he is "talking or singing" everything syllable sounds perfect ,he just won't open his mouth . As if he has a binky in but doesn't .
