Looking to dip my toe into the world of English language teaching, be it online or in person. I'd be very Interested to know if there are many TEFL/TESOL teachers working abroad in their late 50's or is that too late to start? Keep up the great videos Tom
Hi Tom, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm currently in Perth Australian, its a 4 hour flight from here, so I'm thinking of just jumping in, but I've been to Phenom Penh, I much prefer Siem Reap. Did you make the move or planning?@@mduckod992
Flying there in 2 weeks to do my tefl on site in Siem Reap then on to Phnom Penh. I'll buy you a beer. After watching this I might delay and take the same course you did. Gives me a little more time to finish selling my stuff here and be prepared. I was going to use travelbud. Have you heard of them? Also from Canada. Waterloo.
I have heard of them. I have another subscriber going there in the fall. I don’t know much about them but I’ve heard people describe their experience in a negative way. I think they are also more expensive than AVSE as well. I dont want to bad mouth another place- I can only speak on the course I’ve taken. They put you infront of real classrooms of students during the course, at several different schools. These schools could be places you end up getting a job at. So thats another added bonus of doing a program in Phnom Penh. You are placed infront of a bunch of potential employers right as you graduate. They help send your CV to all the schools too
Great video. Very informative. I want to do the course and work in Cambodia. I don't have a degree, and no experience. Is there a guarantee that I will get a job? With no degree and experience, what's the salary going to look like?
I have no degree and had no experience either and i started at $1250. I should warn you tho people from Africa say that they run into difficulties getting visas and that kinda stuff due to prejudice. However I worked with a few South African people so its not impossible. This is more an issue the darker your skin is. In Cambodia they are even sometimes prejudice to khmer people who have darker skin. Their own people.
Thank you for your reply Tom, i really appreciate it. I understand and that is a concern for me however i hoping me being Indian might help. I apologize for only asking about salaries. Because of your videos and from the research i gathered online, i believe have enough information. In your honest opinion. What are my chances?
Hi Tom. Awesome videos...so glad I came across your channel. I recently got TEFL certified but I used a free platform "Teacher Record". I know this is not what you recommend... however I am very interested in teaching in Cambodia and build a new life and career there. Any advise on which companies I can contact or I apply with while still living in my home country. I have a bit of money to fly over and use for about 2 weeks. Any advise would be appreciated. Regards Rudi
You cannot secure a job from outside the country. It must be done in person. They wont hire you over the internet. You could set up interviews a head of time. Look up schools on Facebook and msg them your resume
It is definitely still doable. I’ve seen person from Colombia. But Native English speakers make higher salary as teachers. - when you reach out to AVSE they will do a free ZOOM call with you to answer all your questions and they can get an idea of your English level. “Peter@avse.edu.vn”
Enjoy your videos as always. Seeing as your videos are targeting people who are not in Cambodia yet, do you think you’d be able to do a video on how to interact with the khmer people in a respectful way (greetings etc)? As our western habits and norms could be unintentionally rude.
I see that AVSE covers both Vietnam and Cambodia. Why did you choose Cambodia over Vietnam? Have you been there as well? I have lived in Vietnam for 9 months pre-covid and traveled all over, really like the country and I haven't been to Cambodia yet. Gathering information about possible options. Thanks
In vietnam you need a degree in order to get a work permit- I do not have a degree. Cambodia has no requirement for a degree. If you decide to go thru with the course please mention you heard of it from me
Help, coming in three weeks. Voice teacher pro band leader. Like your style. Where can I get the Tesol. I have two universities Rutgers and Cal Law could help to get work.
Check out www.AVSE.edu.vn - they offer an in-person course in Phnom Penh including job placement. They also have the option to do the course online. Look into it and they will reach out and have a free zoom call with you to answer your questions. If you decide to go for it, mention you heard of it from me 😁 - the TESOL certification you get is Government accredited so its very legit
Absolutely!! Its very common. I personally know People from sweden or india that do it. I think you are paid slightly less than a Native English speaker
Good evening Tom, I am in Kitchener, Ontario - I want to go there and teach _ Can we chat online _ if possible please _ I need some directions _ will greatly appreciated. see you soon.
Check out www.avse.edu.vn - its where i got certified to teach and they line you up with a job. If you reach out to them they will do a free zoom call with you and explain it all and answer your questions. They are very nice and informative. If you decide its right for you, mention Tom Trips Out
You need to get an E-Type Visa on your way in. These can be extended once you land a job. a Tourist visa can not be extended past 1 month. Once you land a job - the school will help you take care of getting a work Visa extension, as well as the work permit. They also usually reimburse you for a large portion of it. - if you go through AVSE they can help guide you through each step of the process. www.avse.edu.vn - mention you heard it from me if you decide to sign up
Heyyy i want to come to combodia for my studies can u tell me it's will good decision or not?? And it's really combodia safe for international students?????? Pls make a video about international students
Tom Buddy.. it’s me again! 🤣 So…. If I take the course with these guys.. and that’s what I’m thinking to do? Would this exclude me from being able to teach in Thailand? Or is this just for Cambodia and Vietnam? 🤷🏻♂️
The certificate you get will allow you to teach in ANY country. However, you’d have to apply for those jobs yourself. AVSE offers job assistance after the course but the partner schools are all in Cambodia or Vietnam. Which is no big deal, if you searched some Thai schools and emailed them you’d have interviews set up in no time
@@TomTripsOut Brilliant! I want to be in SE Asia.. Thailand would be my first choice.. but Cambodia and Vietnam would be a very close second! I hear Thailand is not as easy to as it used to be able to just pass your TESOL/TEFL and expect to walk into a teaching job there? Where as Cambodia/Vietnam are a little more feasible? 🤷🏻♂️
@@TomTripsOut ok.. thanks for replying to my questions dude. Enjoy your day in class and I'll keep you posted! Great content mate. Keep up the good work you are doing! 👊🏻
@@liamobrien154 you could teach in Cambodia or Vietnam to start and then start applying to jobs in Thailand. It might be harder there if they are all asking for experience. So you could build some experience and then pop over to Thailand. You can even take a bus there
If you go to AVSE website you can reach out to them and they would do a FREE video call with you to answer any questions. I don’t do phone calls. You can DM me on Instagram or FB if u want. www.avse.edu.vn
Yes you definitely can. You DO NOT need a degree to enrol in AVSE. Also, in Cambodia a degree is not a requirement to become a Teacher either. - I personally do not have a degree. They just want you to be reliable with a positive attitude and a Native English Speaker. There are a very small handful of specialized schools that pay their teachers more - and they require a degree, but it is very very rare. - I plan on making a video this weekend focussing on working here without a degree, so stay tuned for that! - Also If you end up going through with the course, make sure you let them know you heard of it from ME! - it helps to support my channel and help more people. :) - Tom Trips Out - www.avse.edu.vn
Im not allowed to talk about that publicly. Its in my contract with the school. Not every teacher is paid the same so they dont want my co workers seeing what i make. Msg me on instagram
No - the schools here don’t give you anything like flights or accommodations. I’ve heard of that in Korea, but not here In Cambodia or Vietnam. You have to pay all of your own expenses
I am a native speaker with a PhD from a world-class university, but it's unrelated to English or teaching. Do you know whether that would make it easier to land a higher paid job? I would like to teach part time while also working remotely for an institution outside Cambodia, is that possible or are there Visa issues?
All of that is possible. People with any degree can make more money, and you can find part time work. You just need proof you work there and you can get the Visas. They can give you a letter of employment even if you’re part time. BUT you still need a TEFL / TESOL certificate to teach. Id suggest the one i took. You can do it in country in person or you can do it online - AVSE Tesol www.avse.edu.vn
Mostly in Phnom Penh, that's where they've built strong connections with the school. But they could send your resume/CV, on your behalf, to schools in Siem Reap too. It looks more official when the email comes from the AVSE office, and they already trust you are coming from a good source.
