I doubt anybody else was wondering about this, but for anyone else as tragic as me out there… I googled and can confirm that the KitKat was launched by Rowntree of York on 29 August 1935. I also learned that the name Kit Kat came from the Kit Kat club which was named after Christopher Catling who used to hold a literary and political club in his pie shop in London in 17th century.
I left school 5 year ago so I guess I can give an up to date view on how history is taught. In my first year at secondary school we learned about the slave trade, by third year we learned about racism in Ameirca like jim crow laws. We learned about the suffragettes and what they had to go. We learned about labours policies after WW2

Things to be proud of: 1)The Industrial revolution 2)The Magna Carta 3)Abolition of the slave traade 4)World war 2 5)Literature 6)Sports 7)Royal Family 8)Trade Unions Not to be proud of 1)The Empire. 2)The Mau Mau rebellion 3)The Irish potato famine 4)The destruction of colonial records 5)Cruel Monarchs Children should be taught everything about British history.
I agree with dazz above that students need to be given a wide variety of facts and let them make up their own minds. I was born 1990 and throughout school I only really remember the Tudors and WW2 in history, oh and in secondary I know we did castles through the years. But I think I did the Tudors about 4 times in school! Anyways now as an adult learning about black history in the UK, colonialism, we learned about kings and queens but never the government and PMs. I was like Storm and learned about WW2 but not WW1 or and other wars the UK was involved in. I know students can’t learn EVERYTHING but I think history should be more well-rounded.
I would have liked to have known more about the working class families during my time learning history at school but we were taught about royalty and the richer folk. What about the poor working class in the factories getting cotton lung from breathing in the cotton and the poor children that were put to work in the factories many of them not making it into adulthood. These people need to be remembered too, these people were the real Britain.
Be proud of Britain when we’re kind, interested in people who are different without having to lose sight of who you are in a defensive way. That you can sit next to and just be shoulder to shoulder in your similarly and difference. And be able to disagree in a respectful way. And be ashamed if you’re an intolerant bigot. A homophobe, sexist, misogynistic , racist, transphobic fool. Seems quite simple really 😊
Maybe we need to teach the children of the 4 nations that we are all one and stop teaching them that the English are all bad people unite the nations . Maybe teach the kids that the brits gave the world very many things that enhanced the life’s of so many worldwide . We know our fore fathers did some wrongs but we are far from alone . Get the kids into assembly daily singing our national anthem help them be proud
The Quakers at the inception of the chocolate industry, created a business and social model. That would be out of touch in the 21st century currently, where you could manufacture products, create employment and allow for a good quality of family life in a socially conducive environment.
Not taking sides here, but it is interesting that someone who is woke, makes such a great speech about critical thinking etc, but only against the thing she doesn’t agree with. Surely things that she likes could be dismissed in exactly the same way.
I was taught proud British history in the 90’s. Basically skipped over real events like slavery etc. You need to be taught a full spectrum of history. Good and bad.

Did they teach you that there was a famine in the UK when the British Empire was approaching its zenith. Ireland was part of the UK when the potatoe blight struck. Ireland produced more than enough food to feed her population but the Brits exported it rather than feed the people. The Brits sucked the wealth and resources out of the country, kept the people ignorant through lack of education, taxed them penally and if they couldnt afford to pay they evicted them onto the side of the road. I bet they didn't or won't teach you that at school and thats only for starters of how they behaved in Ireland.....United Kingdom my arse.
Who gives a crap.. non of you were there and England didn't do this stuff. Some people who lived in England once upon a time did it. I don't even know why we study history, we don't learn anything from it, we just use it to argue and fight.
Michaela School do this well by uniting the children all from different backgrounds. Singing the natural anthem, celebrating British dates instills pride. Unless of course you want to remain bitter and resentful about the country you live in..
