Teach Your Dog LEAVE IT - YUK Command - Leave it Command - Protect Your DOG!

Teach your dog to LEAVE IT is important for your dog's safety. The LEAVE IT command is used for many things including leaving food, leaving stones - as in not picking up anything and it's also used to keep your dog from going near another dog or other animal. Leave It can also be called YUK or FOOEY.

Teach your dog to be obedient and listen to you. I think this is one of the top 3 things to teach your dog. Teaching your dog to leave it can save his or her life.

I've had so many arguments about whether the dog should get the treats on the ground.... I agree with you. Leave it means those treats are off the table permanently.
@HK-eb3by
@HK-eb3by 5 лет назад
Next time tell those people in the argument in the real world you would use it in regards to something unhealthy or dangerous that the dog is never suppose to have so there's no reason to give the treats marked with leave it during practice. There's no argument after that.
@k9psychology87
@k9psychology87 2 года назад
That then wouldn’t be a leave it if you give the treats you’ve asked them to leave. All they’ve done is taught wait.

Robert, your "leave it" instructions have probably saved my puppy's life a couple of times now. I didn't realize how important the command was until reloading prescription meds into a pill-box and having some spill. Thanks to the training I gave him after watching one of your videos he stayed still and watched me clean up the mess.

I taught my dog "leave it" and then gave it to them as the reward, and it became as soon as I said "good boy" he would launch for it. I actually had to re teach it as "mine" meaning- absolutely never under any circumstance are you getting this thing. Lol

Dogs are good at picking up patterns like that, I made the same mistake when I tought my dog "smell" command, meaning he was allowed to roam on his leash and investigate smells around him. The mistake was i would tell him "Smell" after having him sit and focus, so he would anticipate it and be ready to go. Now I use it more sporadically and it has helped lot with how things work.

Hi Robert, and thank you for all you post to RU-vid. I can't express how much some of your simplified videos have helped me train my Belgian Malli. I've learned quite a bit of what's considered "common etiquette," from your videos. After a lifetime of always having dogs, I have to say the my Malli has been the most stubborn headed of any breed I've ever owned. However, I signed the unwritten contract that's absolutely true, whenever one purchases or adopts a new pup: they're your's through the good, the wonderful, and the tragic. Taking care of them is one's job. I simply want to express how much your no nonsense approaches just click; and genuinely make all the difference. Please keep it up. You're seriously making a difference in more live's than you may know about. Again, thank you for all you do!

I have been a dog trainer for years and this is pretty much spot-on to my beliefs. Leave it needs to be items that they are not allowed to have... ever! Other trainers want to reward with the same item that they said to leave it. It doesn’t work like that, and it won’t click with the dog, because he will think, “okay. I can wait and get it in a minute.”
@isitjustme_

Ever ? Oof ... When I bring my boy out for training or playing, his game is fetch with a ball and he knows to leave it when I use the command. Even when he's excited, he will leave it and wait for further instruction ie lay down, stay, jump, sit and then finally; GO GET IT ! But he also knows the "leave it" command in other contexts and situations, if he goes after a basketball, soccer ball, looks too interested in a squirrel etc I will tell him to "leave it !" And he immediately stops and moves on. I will use "leave it" to help him understand what is NOT his and what he CANT ever touch or go near, but I also use it during training and play with his ball and he seems to have the capacity to differentiate. Am I still doing it wrong ?

Thank you. Having other people demonstrate or try to demonstrate what your teaching with random dogs is perfect. I understand Goofy makes things a very precise video of a teaching. However having a dog that’s not disciplined and having others demonstrate gives a super huge amount of extra teaching. As your adjusting and explaining why it must be a certain way. Would be cool if you could do some work with large troublesome dogs and show us the progress. The positive and negative side so we can see what is to much force on a dog or how far to go with corrections. How to keep control without buying into being to aggressive from reacting. Love the videos so it would be great if you could. Thanks again.

Hi Robert, I have watched several of your videos and this one I knew I had to implement for our puppies. We have 4, 5 month old Malinios Sheperd mix puppies and have a challenge sometimes with them. We live in Jamaica and our dogs are not house dogs. We needed to teach them the leave it command so that they won't eat anything from anyone besides my wife and I. They are proving to be very good watch/guard dogs and bark and alert us if they see or smell anyone passing near our gate. I watched your clip and decided to train them the leave it command. I was surprised how quickly they all learned it, less than 5 mins.There are 3 males and a female. I didn't even have to leash her to restrain her. The boys caught on after the second correct, while Sablelee was a natural as she doesn't eat anything if it's not in her plate or from our hands. Great job again and keep up the good work. Richard.

In my opinion, this is a vital skill for any puppy or dog to have. Not only is it for safety (stop them from eating things, or chasing things), but it also helps to build impulse control. And it's so versatile, to help with many different behavioral issues. ❤️❤

I found leave very useful on the each where you don’t want them to eat poisonous dead fish that may have washed up on the shore it’s great forgetting your dog to ignore poultry there’s a guy on a channel called homesteady who has to labs that he uses as retrievers when he is hunting but the ducks and chicken on his farm he tells his dogs leave it minealso any area that people may have been fishing as they may have left hooks with old bait on it smelly old bits of fish or prawns are really attractive to dogs the smellier the better but the last thing you need is a vet bill for surgery to remove fish hooks from your dogs insides

Great advice and training.. some owners especially in the US are so soft towards their dogs. I grew up around pitbulls ( gamebreed ones not overgrown mixed breeds) and doberman mixes since i was 12...for dogs u have to be firm and establish dominance too.. like parenting.. i think that is why there is a high incidence of dogs attacking their owners more in the US than in other countries.. A small amount of fear of u is better than not having an alpha figure at all... just my opinion..

Robert, you are awesome and your instruction is so clear and understandable. Two questions: I've been told by a "certified trainer" not to use the word "no" and you say not to be afraid to use it. I was corrected by said trainer when I used "no" with my dog. Her explanation was that dogs don't learn words. How would you refute that? Also, my dog seems to have selective hearing when I say her name. I've been told that dogs should immediately cast their attention to you when you say their name. I've never had a dog that did not respond or selectively responded when their name is called. Is there a resolution to this issue?

Is there a clear way to progress and generalize this behavior to a default leave it, where the dog knows to leave stuff on the street even and especially when if I don't see it first? My dog snagged a sharp bone today that was in tall grass - no way for me to have seen it first or to have said "leave it" before she was on it. She also will NOT relinquish once she has it. Boxers are named as such because they use their paws to “box”. I have had Boxers for 22 years and one of the boys never stopped pawing but I was able to teach them to paw more gently. The other boys quickly learned not to paw BUT it was because I redirected them. If they pawed me/us/someone else I told them “No paw” and asked them do so something else like “sit”, “out”, “back”, etc. Boxers are smart dogs and with gentle repetitive training, you’ll get there. Good luck!

I'm having a devil of a time getting a dog to not pick up sticks and leaves on a walk. She does leave it very well indoors, but not outside with sticks. And, the owners haven't taught a drop it command, so he has no idea what that means.

Robert Bovasso it’s as simple as being more interesting than the sticks and leaves. Get her attention, go and look silly or something

My 4 mos old husky had a fight and was bit by another puppy when i left him with a family member. He now growls and is aggressive towards other dogs. Is there a way to correct/modify that behavior?

Do you recommend that type of leash for beginning your dog in this training? If so, what type is it?
