Thank you for the awesome video! I have 3 dogs. I do not usually call them dogs. I call them my girls or my babies. Two are rescues that were abused and will not let anyone come near their paws; my other baby is 14 years old, blind and deaf and will no longer let anyone trim her nails. I cannot wait to implement this and help them to get past their fear of having their nails trimmed. ♥️🐕🐾🐶
I really appreciate you mentioning that the first few steps can take a couple weeks. I have a tendency to rush through training, so this was a helpful reminder! Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much for this video. My dog was so afraid of getting her nails clipped. Patience paid off and going through the steps, I'm finally getting to clip a nail or two a day. It's taken 4 weeks, but it's worth it. It'll only get better from here.
My 5 month old puppy is scared of her nail clipper i don’t know what to do she didn’t have any experience of her nail trimmed off before she is screaming on one of her nail trimming me and my mom try just one of her nail that didn’t help at all how you do that to keep your dog to be brave to trimming a nails 😳😵
Thank you for this video! My dog used to scream bloody murder and bite me aggressively when I even attempted to clip her nails, and now she let's me do it without much hesitancy. There are days she pulls away her paw and other days she doesn't care when I clip, but it's a night and day difference.
Yes, I agree with you. That would have been better. I don’t think I have ever posted a video and thought that was the perfect video. Anytime I watch them back, I think I could have said that different or added this or that. Appreciate constructive feedback
Ok I watched this video and bookmarked it but I thought “I’ll be shocked if that actually works.” But $20 every 2 weeks at the pet groomer and my dog literally petrified and shaking with fear every time I take him to ANY pet groomer, I really was willing to try anything. It really broke my heart seeing just how terrified he was. When I try to do it, I swear he acted like I was about to commit murder. He’s only 30lbs but I could no longer hold him while he struggled. It became too much. I had to go REALLY slow and I’m still not yet at the end. Every single day at bed time I am doing this step by step training. Sometimes one other time during the day. Each time about 5mins. I’m at the stage now where he literally gives me his paw every time I pick up the clippers. He went from literally running away and hiding under tables when I pick up clippers to actually looking forward to me picking up the clippers. I’m truly AMAZED but it does take a few weeks with a dog as petrified of nail clipping as mine was. I’m still in the training phase. Now as soon as he sees the clippers he lifts his paw. I can tap his nails and he just sits there waiting for the tapping to be over so he can get his treat. I’m also lengthening the time between treats to eventually phase out the treats. At first it was every single time he gives me his paw. Now he gives me each paw, then I tap on all nails then he gets a treat. What’s weird is he willingly gives me his right paw but seems less comfortable giving me his left paw so I’m focusing on the left paw now and he’s becoming much more willing. The rear paws don’t seem to be an issue at all for whatever reason but I’m literally working paw by paw right now. I’m SO amazed that I had to come back and share the progress so far. Consistency and tiny treats is definitely key. My dog gets like a half a kibble sized high value treat. I have to remember to do this every single day. It’s very slow for my dog but it’s truly magical to see your dog shift from completely terrified to completely willing when the nail clippers come out. I’ve got one more step to go which is actually clipping and I think we’re pretty close but I don’t wanna rush it. It’s been about 3 weeks. This definitely takes patience. For me it’s about 5mins every night.
Great job sticking with it! You can add an extra step by holding the paw and clipping a toothpick in half to get your dog use to the sound as well. Wish you and your dog the best moving forward!
Ohhhh, what a fantastic idea! I will definitely give that a shot! Thanks so much. I have to tell ya I’ve been watching RU-vid dog training videos for a full year now and gave up on all the advice that was not working. Then I found your step by step videos and each one I’ve tried has worked every time. Thanks a million! 🙂🙏🏼
I’m back to report that I’m now using a dremel (my dogs worst nightmare for the sound alone). But I’m always so afraid I might cut the quick that I really wanted to switch to the dremel. I bought the quietest one I could find on Amazon. Using this technique little Milo is now licking his lips and automatically raising his paw when he sees me bringing the Dremel out. I did this the same way - a few mins a day, one nail at a time until he was fine with it. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! 🙏🏼
Without one single treat, you managed to transplant my heart into my throat. Thank you for sharing the horror (and hopefully the remedy), we all go through on this issue. Good luck.
I feel first time traumatized him to death. The tech at vet made him bleed . He is horrified every time he sees me with the nail grinder . And ofc covid makes it harder with everything . I tried with peanut butter, but it didnt work. He is so aggressive with the groomer too . I seriously plan to use sedation now
My dog is having such a hard time with getting his nails cut or filed. Urgh!! He needs it bad because he’s hurting me whenever he jumps up to greet me or even just playing around.
My dog yanks her feet away the whole fucking time and wiggles and moves and i hate it shes so fucking stubborn shes 12 idk how the groomers do it for her she’s impossible i hate this virus
Thanks I will surely try this method.I hope this method will help my dog to be positive for the nail trimming process. God please help my Bruno to come out of this fear🙏 of trimming nails. Thank for the video
The vet literally had to give my German Shepherd sleepy meds so that they could cut her nails. She wouldn’t let my dad, my grandparents, or me do it and she tried to bite and growl at the vets. So they had to make her super tired.
Thank you for the step by step instructions, I am going to be working on this with my two. One has always needed to be muzzled, I have been attempting this since Christmas and have made progress but I hope with your guidance I will see vast improvements to retrain them and their experiences with nail trimming. Again thank you for sharing and I will let you know how it goes
Yes, we have made progress. they both let me cut their nails and the miniature pincher does not need the muzzle. I am still working on it with them because they still don’t like it but it is way better than it used to be. One is 15 years old and the other is 9 years old. They love the treats so that helps too.
Thank you so much for showing me i need patience with this and how to do it!!! I used this same technique but with the dremel!!! Both my Australian Shepherd (13 yrs old)and Great Pyrenees(3yrs old) run up and give me their paws now as soon as i turn it on!!! No more struggle and stress!!! ❤️❤️❤️
What a great video. I think I went too fast through the steps before I realised and watched this video. I hope I haven’t spooned the training. Thank you.
I love it - Only problem is that it'd probably take about 5 years with my dog, and no doubt she'd end up weighing a couple of stone - not a good look for a Jack Russell Terror.
I have a jack too & Gosh she hates hygiene!! Every tooth brushing, every ear cleaning, every nail clipping is such a task! Probably because she’s so smart! She knows all my tricks already lol
I have a 100 plus pound male German Shepard he used to let me do his nails with no problem ,had 2 Jack Russells that had a fit when i cut their nails my Shepard would watch then he decided he wasn't going to allow his done anymore have tried groomers and he just throws them around and he knocks muzzles off in seconds,I have to take him to the vet and have him sedated now to get his nails done, this dog is very intelligent and very well trained just so afraid he goes crazy when trying to cut his nails,
Does step 4 (not letting the dog pull away his paw) also apply to step 2 ( hold paw and treat). Touching the paw is my main hurdle. Been desensitizing him by giving his legs a good scratch and pet while while moving down to his foot. He's somewhat fine with it (highly neurotic dog, ADD like). However holding his paw is an automatic pull away and eventual growl if I attempt it too much. He's cool with clippers but the paw is my struggle. I dont know if this is significant, but he's....not a bright boy. Like goldfish level intelligence. Sweet, loving, but has a potato brain.
@@narmstrong784 It's now been over a year since I had Keria clipped. She's doing alright though. Her due claws have curled around but are not touching her, there is about a half inch of space there. She is naturally shedding her nails. All of her nails are naturally shedding. Is it possible that some dogs don't need nail trims? I really don't know.
@@timcat1004 You should take them to the vet. Curled nails can get stuck really easily... I understand that it's expensive, but long nails can end up deforming the feet and cause even more issues later on.
Yes, it will work for your dog. It is important to work at the pace that is appropriate for your dog. If your dog has had a negative experience with their nails being clipped or doesn't like their feet touched in general, then you will need to go slower with each step.
If your dog is at the level where they will bite you, I would recommend slowing the process way down for now. The dog probably feels as if she is being pushed too far. It may be because the dog has had too many prior negative experiences with the clippers such as extensive restraint or the nail was cut too short. It is always a good idea to condition the dog to a muzzle to provide safety, but you will want to slow things down for now or stop with the clippers and switch to a different tool. You may want to try a scratch board for nail filing if you are afraid your dog is going to bite you.
Check out videos on either white nails or black nails, whichever your dog may have. You'll be guided through it and the differences between the two that tell you when to stop. Good luck.
