Welcome to Standing Stone Kennels!
In this video we show the next step of the Trained Retrieve. We want Gus to become comfortable holding objects in his mouth without mouthing them. In this part of the trained retrieve we use our hand at first to get them used to holding something in their mouth then move onto a dowel like object. Until your dog is comfortable holding something in their mouth you won't be able to move onto the next step of the Trained Retrieve.

Thank you! I had my dogs retrieving but they did not like the bumper! What a great aha moment!

My Belgian malinois was trained in protection. At the age of 7 months I finally started to train him retrieve dove and duck. He picked it up in n 2 weeks and we were out hunting. No issues at all with his biting at all.. but during protection training, his jaws will lock on everything... Hunting and his mouth was so soft on birds while retrieving.

I'm so happy to come across this video! We are currently working with our GWP to hold and do a trained retrieve. I was looking for a way to do this without a forced fetch and here it is. Really hoping it will work with him. Love the idea to start with hands because my pup already knows not to bite me, so I think it'll be a good place to start.

Hey there. So this is so this is a common misconception popularized by traditional dog trainers that rely on tools to make life unpleasant when their dog does not perform as desired. Here's a video that will explain the dominance myth: ==> BestDogTrainingProgram.blogspot.com

You have a nice soft easy manner with animals. I am teaching an ECS to do a trained retrieve without munching on it. I might even try a hunt test with her in the future as I believe she has an aptitude for the work. We wont use an ecollar but this gives me a step by step for how to. She retrieves naturally but we have to work to perfect her technique.

I start teaching hold with a gloved hand...2 seconds of success is better than 5 seconds of failure. With a gloved hand, I think it is easier for pup to understand the hold concept and not to chew, especially not to chew the owners fingers, plus pup cannot spit out a gloved hand. I usually teach hold before each feeding session, so twice a day, max 2 minutes per session. Start with a gloved hand building hold gradually for a few seconds sequentially, until pup can reliably hold for >2 minutes without chewing/spitting out. Then transition to a big leather mitten, then a canvas bumper, then a plastic bumper. After hold is solid, then I start the force fetch process. Why force fetch? Because I run field trials/hunt tests where the retriever must reliably retrieve a wet, cold, skanky duck at hundreds of yards distance away from the handler and the retriever must not drop to shake after exiting water. If I was exclusively hunting, I would not force fetch as every bird in hunting is a freshly shot flyer, not a cold, skanky bird with the scent of other dogs from previous retrieves.

Good video. You have a good way with the pups. I have a 2 year old black lab, and she has her HRCH, needs one pass for her senior title and hope to get her Master hunter title this season. Reading some of the comments, you might want to start off with "Make sure your pup is collar conditioned before you start this." People not in the know will think you can just strap an e-collar onto their dog and it will fix anything.

Do you have any videos on training your pup to focus during training? I have a lab pup and she knows 2 speeds right now... I have her fetching balls, bumpers etc in a field no collar but working on hold is difficult. She always wants to play instead.

Sounds like you made a couple mistakes. A live consult with a pro may be a better idea.

This is exactly the reason it is much better to use positive reinforcement training - you obtain better results and no negative effects such as the one mentioned in this post! Dr. Dale Hubbard, Ph.D.

Ya you used the e collar in the wrong manner. No never use it on commands your dog doesn't know. Use it as reinforcement
@johnbuchanan742

Bo Boura it's very important to collar condition first and be very easy on your dog with the shock level

Why not start from the beginning with a training bumper?
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels 6 лет назад
Peter Colley the hard dowel is easier to eliminated chewing habits from beginning for starting this process! Thanks for watching!

Why use a forceful means when training retrieve when you can achieve better results with positive reinforcement. You are not building a strong bond with your hunting dog as you would with a positive means. Disappointing to see that some trainers are still using a primitive means.

Disgusting, cruel and completely unnecessarily inhumane way to teach an easy skill which can be taught without torturing the dog. Check out force free gundog trainers who are competent enough not to need to abuse the dog to teach simple skills.

You actually need to teach your dog bite inhibition, not just stick your fingers in his mouth.
@StandingStoneKennels
@StandingStoneKennels 6 лет назад
Adventures with Frodo Thanks for the comment. Bite inhibition isn’t exactly what we are working on. As I explain in the video our hand plays an important role to help prevent tonguing which will typically translate to rolling birds later in life.
