Teaching your Malinois puppy how to learn the DOWN command can be pretty simple. In this short video I give you the basic tips using a platform that can make the training a little easier. You can make one, use a table or order one from the link on my site... see below.
Of course this lesson can be applied to just about any breed of dog. Higher drive dogs such as German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois and such might be a little bit more feisty and you'll see that in this video with Siggy.

Enjoy training your puppy! And remember, they're only puppies for a very short time.... give them the tools to succeed and training is the greatest gift you can give your dog!

I see what u did there at 2:43, tucking hand in pockets and looking away the moment the pup looked at you sends a clear message “Pay attention to your handler” pup quickly realized. Many ppl miss those tiny key moments (myself included). Your vids are helping me understand small things we’ve overlooked in the past and way ahead of making the decision to bring home a new puppy (we’re getting our kiddos familiarized with the responsibilities first). Thanks for sharing!

You bought your 5 year old son a dog? Let alone a Belgian Malinois. Oh yikes.

Thank you for the video. You hit home with me a different perspective in puppy training. Instead of using commands & teaching the basics, you are building rapport with you puppy before actually teaching them commands. WoW so easy, yet you demonstrated that by talking in that puppy language doing natural behaviors the dogs grows trust. That trust will make training 10x more easy. We try to instantly make puppies into human and that is where training fails for so many people. Don't get me wrong socializing & commands are upmost important, but that trust makes it so much easier. Again, Thank You!❤

Im trying to train my cats with your methods And I am having the worst time getting them to acknowledge the down pose. It’s reassuring to see that even for the pros just takes lot of repetition 👍

Got a 5 month old staffie/American pit i rescued from the life of being a bait dog and to help me recover from losing my brother back in January. Your videos have been a godsend, I have a question I don't know if you've ever covered. How do you reintroduce a smaller dog to bigger dog breeds and grow her confidence to hopefully grow past any trauma before she becomes an adult?

Just a designated "place" for the dog. Like having a crate, it's used for obedience and just general training I believe

Its used to teach the dogs various things, one of the big ones is relax, just teaching it to lie down and relax regardless of where you are. Another is if you teach it well your dog will have fun doing it and it will zoom in on platforms in other areas like if you start at home inside and go to a more strained area like outside or a park. My mom is a dog trainer, I don't remember everything but it has tons of benefits for your dog and is a versatile exercise for it

Makes him feel uncomfortable standing on it, so he’d rather lay down.

My 4 month puppy doesn’t always listen unless he sees the treat then he’s a charmer. Does this get better with age?
@kamilguchowski2793

It's still a small pupy. if you train your dog dont show him treats. Hide it behind you and when dog does something right reward him. Just google it or watch someone else's youtube film
@Joshuaxiong2

You command and wait until he do the command. I don’t show them the treats. I got my dogs to understand if they do what I command they will get something good.

I disagree with your use of the word DOWN too early in the process. You should be using the word DOWN after the dog is in the DOWN at this stage. This will reduce confusion in the dog's mind, and he will get the DOWN quicker. DOWN being ALL ELBOWS DOWN. Just a tip from your uncle Billy 😂

I must have watched a large proportion of your videos and listened to many of your podcasts. I have just got a new rescue dog who is just over a year old and am still torn as to deciding to join your membership. One reason really. I have heard you giving the reasons why people shouldn't get Malinoiss. I wanted one and four the reasons you and others started, I decided I would not get one. I believe that you and other online trainers are the reason people are getting them, not John Wick. A large majority of your's and other training videos are mostly showing Malinois spot GSDs. Why? Obviously they are easier to train and so sell your training better. Why not train some rescue dogs on here, or other breeds, or normal cross breeds? I would be more convinced to join your membership. But at the moment, I am just nervous that I choose the wrong mentor, although I am convinced about you in reality.

Well, because as dog trainers they enjoy teaching the dog new things. With a Mal, Borer Collie, GSD, Dobermann, Rottweiler, Dutch Shepherd, field Retreivers etc. you can teach them as many things as you want. But sadly, you can’t really do that with an Afghan Hound, or Beagle.

I can see your point and I do think it is probably a combination of what people see in the movies and trainers they watch online. Maybe what's missing is a disclaimer before using working dogs in training videos, that they all have serious drive, need to be busy, and if you can't cater for that then don't get any breed of working dog. I have a 5 year-old working line German Shepherd and I put a lot of work into turning her from a velociraptor puppy and a willful teenager to a great adult dog. They are biddable and want to work but they also have a decision making capability which can be quite scary when you figure that out. That's why they can be used for so many different services. I have also just taken on a 3 year-old Malinois that was seized from a backyard breeder. She's great with people and other dogs and very affectionate (my Shepherd isn't, only on her terms) but she is definitely a 'Malinois' and you can see the switch get thrown when we go out. Hyper alert and ready to go with no particular strategy in mind other than to 'go for it'. She knows some commands but she needs the kind of training I'm not sure I can give so we will be going to a trainer with breed experience and soaking up every bit of advice they give so I can do right by her. I fully understand deterring people who maybe want a particular breed on a whim but there needs to be a 'why' to elaborate on the 'don't'.

The guy is not dominant with his dog. Got to have a firm voice. Must show the dog your the alpha. The dog will make him the pet before long without proper technique.
