Dear Kat and Ethan, This one is an excellent tutorial. Our puppy is in the biting phase, and the current favourite is the ankle! We have a new wire haired pointer (our second) and he will have the same temperament as the short haired. Your tutorials have ensured a smooth transition in Ottos first week at home, he is 8 weeks and we live in Switzerland. Many thanks, Helen

Fab piece - when I had puppies in the house (Alaskan Malamutes) I yelped (varying the intensity) or removed myself from the situation - just like this. Hopefully got a GSP puppy joining the family in about 9 weeks (COVID 19 restrictions) permitting so wanted to see a reminder of what to do! I’ve also been checking out your other puppy training vids

i have fostered puppies (two at a time) for the last few years and they always go through these steps when one is playing too rough with the other; the puppy being beaten up yelps and stops playing; if that doesn't work the puppy will start barking at the bully; if that doesn't work more often than not he will nip back at the bully rather aggressively. This is why the trainers that promote positive-only training are off the mark; dogs correct each other all the time and this is how they learn what to do and not to do.

Hi Kat, I love the channel! I’m wondering if you could give me a list of every command and skill you teach a dog I. The order you teach them? I have an 8 week old English Setter that just came home yesterday and I would a path from day 1 hunting. If I had a list of the skills and commands I could use your videos to train each skill. The books have all skip basic puppy training and go right to advanced work. Thanks so much for the great content!

After an intense play training session like that, I would have her up and out for potty. Then back for chew toy under supervision. I always supervise chew toys because puppies swallow anything and I avoid vet bills that way. I usually follow intense exercises with outside for a quick potty break, immediately after meals and before bed time and immediately upon waking. It's all one thing, play, bite training, no jumping training and potty training when they are little. Everything is an experience and everything lets puppy know what is expected and when. I use the same high pitched vocalizations you use and do it the same way. Bravo! You are on the way to a well mannered dog!

Our gsp use to do that leg splaying as well. Never hurt her and she would fully stretch out as well. No hip issue up until we had to put her down because she took a nasty fall going down our back steps and damaged her spine. She was 18. And wouldn't survive the necessary surgeries.

Hello, Nice, watching your video clip! I didn't think of saying "Ouch" verbiage to my recently deceased Dear Tawny of 16 yrs old when she was a puppy. So looking forward to getting another GSP female puppy next year, I will be looking forward to reviewing your video clips often. I always adore the GSP breed and its personality, and so forth. Due to my prior GSP breeder now no longer in business, so I have been looking on the internet often to find a highly reputable private breeder in my home state of AZ and nearby states. I welcome any good breeder information from you that you may know I could be inquiring about. I am quite particular on good quality GSP breeder role, not from the Puppy Mill role. Much appreciated for the understanding! Thank you, Don

I had a similar situation on my last GSP years ago as a puppy, I did say in a quick deep man pitch that had her to back off. Then it worked as needed until she was into an adult stage. Every GSP puppy responds differently so do any experiential ways to see what one works or not. This takes patience and effort to find the right one! Never scold or attack back, which will escalate the fear or promote aggressiveness to a GSP puppy.

My arms and hands have puncture marks all over them. I have tried everything you taught and have been consistent but saying "ouch" only amps him up. Alot. He does not stop to provide time to praise him for stopping. He will move from biting hands to quickly nipping legs, grabbing pants, catching me on the back if I am sitting down. Getting up to leave the situation is tough. Its like having an 18 lb. mini dinosaur chasing me. If I run he grabs clothes. If I calmly walk away he circles me and nips. He is a very smart dog and knows a handful of commands already but he will not stop when in this mode. #ijustwanthimtobeloveydovey

My girls are about eight months old right now and only one will give 'flea bites' that leave bruises. We do say ouch and she stops but then it's like she forgets and next time does the same. I understand she may be excited in the moment to be with us and this is her love language but the cycle continues. Also, what bones are good for them to chew on? I definitely don't want nylabone or raw hide for different reasons. Also, how do I get them to quit soiling their crates. My boy doesn't and hasn't soiled his crate and he's about a month younger then my girls. Both girls checked out by the vet. No bladder infections obvious but placed them on antibiotic as a preventative measure. Would love to start bringing the girls in the house but as frequently as they seem to need to urinate makes this venture a daunting one. I love my 'babies' but all of them are being raised differently in our household depending on their attitudes and abilities.

What about when your puppy jumps or lunges up at you when you are playing with them, attempting to bite your face etc. What should you do? You weren't allowing your puppy to bite your face. Hi I have a nearly 11 week old GSP Dottie not very original but breeder’s name and she answered to that. I have a question. She does bite but is reasonably gentle more mouthing than actually biting BUT she has started to bark and jump at us with a little snap type bite similar to Quest but more forceful. I have noticed that it is often when we are sitting and not taking notice or not allowing her her own way. Not sure how to deal with it. Have tried getting up and walking out ignoring her but she often follows getting down on haunches and jumping up at legs. Now I don’t feel she is being aggressive or is she trying out a dominant behaviour as litter mates often do. Any suggestions? charles herman I cant argue with that. I do think applying that level of learning to an 8 week old puppy is probably not the best path to take. GSP is always known to be highly energetic and hypoactive. Take him out for a long nice walk on a leash, will help to wear off its energy. Its energetic level will calm down as he ages older. All take patience and time! If you have any chance, let him outside to run around in a secured back yard or on a large property will help burning off his energy. Be with him to play and work him thru if you learned skills from dog training classes.

In the video you use a soft chew toy to get the pup to simulate biting. Doing this can create "hard mouth" resulting in the dog not releasing on retrieve. If this happens, it would require "force retrieve" training that usually involves putting your hand in their mouth and forcing them to hold it

@Edendog
@Edendog 3 года назад
Sometimes the pup is so worked up the high pitched noise just amps them up more. Really, the trick is to totally stop playing to make them rethink biting during play. Make biting you BORING and then play with a tug and make that super fun You may need to try a deeper voice to get her off. The best bet ever is to teach the dog to let go on command. Then when the pup is gnawing on you, just tell him “give” (or whatever verbal you use to let go of something) and reward verbally then with a good game of tug I swear I walk around with a tug on my belt loop all day! It’s super useful. Make the wrong things easy and unrewarding and the right things rewarding and that tends to be the key. Another good tip is to practice bite force pressure by offering a high value food in a closed fist. Something smelly and delicious they want. Then take all the bites but do not open your fist until the pup stops biting and tries licking. That opens the magic box and gets the food. I have been raising pups for 15 years and I have NEVER seen the “yelp” technique work. It doesn’t work with lifter-mates, either. I don’t know why this myth persists, but it does. The noise might startle them and temporarily stop them, and some very sensitive pups may feel nervous and stop totally. My guess is your pup is very confident with you and will really nosh down on you and get more amped up with you. Puppy biting takes some time to get channeled into appropriate mouthing behavior. So hang in there! Tugs and retrieving work well. If a pup really won’t stop you might need to give the pup a chew in a playpen for a while. They sometimes do that if they’re over tired.

I never play tug of war with a bird dog. Can cause hard mouth and retrieving problems.

Why would you get rid of the bite completely? Would you train your kids and yourself to never pet the dog? This sounds a little mean. I always let my dogs bite while working with a pain threshold. Every dog ive had has had an amazing mouth sensitivity. Can go from trying to rip things out of my hands to baby soft the instint they touch skin. Dogs and animals use their mouths for a lot of communication

Sounds like you have a better grip on dog handling than the average person. Thanks for your 2 cents!

Why do you use the “ouch” instead of “no”?
@StandingStoneKennels

JAMES EDWARDS we are trying to let her know she has hurt us so she can make the decision on her own not to bite with as much force. We are teaching her bite inhibition at this point. And eventually we will get to the point where we eliminate biting all together, at that point we would use “no” or “ah-ah-ah” which we use in place of no quite frequently if she would try to bite.

Try the German way,,bite back :) not kidding..a german friend of me had a husky who wouldn't stop biting by 8 months. he bit her in the ear and no more biting after that.. well that is a bit extreme and i do not tell this as an advice..Love my GSP`s and never had the biting problem with them

Wow... rude. But if your going to be insulting you should at least spell the word right... it’s pedantic! But there I go again 🤷🏻‍♀️ being annoying and correcting those small errors and caring about minor details...

First you need more tatoos. How can you be in the side show without them? Next, where is the shock collar? Forget the battery, you folks really use 240 volts to "train" your dogs. Every video has the shock collar. Yeah, you "train" dogs. And how many die from your "training"? Forget the videos we already saw who you are.

My puppy doesn't play with toys at all when I want to,he'll just bite me if I throw a bal or play tug. He can play with his toys individually, just not with me. What do I do
@suz567
@suz567 2 года назад
@BentleyTheLabrador Put away all toys except a favorite one and tease him to play with you with that. Too many toys out at a time can be confusing for pups and human babies too.
