Sorry, but speak for yourself. I've been lucky. I got some wonderful teachers who were essentially second parents to me. Granted some of the more eccentric ones enabled my goblin energy but ehh, it's fine.
Fact's this teacher is the teacher in your dreams, my teacher is sorta similar to this teacher though most of my classmates went from "Decently Stupid" To "Genius" So i support your opinion.
Ashamed teachers made me watch this in school years ago but not a one lived up to being a teacher like that. Through 12 years over 40 different teachers I’m sure, only four I can say did what he did in my school life. Thank you teach✌️
@@breewashere only way I passed freshman year was my math teacher who held a catch up class of his own after school for whatever subject you needed he'd help. Never forget the man, his name was Mr Avery and he was a active army drill instructor. And this was at the peek of 9/11. He went trained our troops body's and minds, and came back to help help us train our mind's. Then he chose to do a tour he didn't have to.. we never saw him after that.. makes me want to reconnect 20 years later
@@CajunReaper95 Whose not who's. Were not was. Than not then. You've proven very thoroughly that the original quote by Hawkins holds merit. It is hilarious the way you set yourself up for failure too. Because the subtext of your reply was that you're a genius when in reality, you're a simple dolt.
I loved how the car played a symbolic representation in how the teacher was feeling. When it started, the teacher felt broken as he didn't know how he would navigate this chapter. When the car was stolen, the teacher felt hopeless When the car was upgraded, it showcases his new found motivation
I was not very smart as a kid . I failed in entrace exam to the top tier elementary school . My mom who has a degree in PhD in chemistry went to the headmaster and offered to teach high school class in chemistry . She quitted her job at the university to come to teach high school kids. Of course I got accepted to the elementary school because of her . She taught for only 2 years but her class got very high score in the national test and many got accepted to very good university . Later on I ask her why she can teach better . She told me that most of the chemistry teacher lack of the deep understanding of the subject . They just ask the kid to memorize everything and do not understand anything.
The reality is, a lot about basic chemistry is MEMORIZING. Why? Chemists dont go in depth in explanation since bonds and atoms actually work via quantum mechanics, which is waaaay hard for ppl not versed on the subject.
Your mom has gotten it right. In my country as well schools don't test our knowledge, they test our memories. Also, if only the teachers questioned themselves whether a student's failure to learn is, in fact, their failure to teach the world would be a better place.
This just shows that everyone is a mf genius when they are taught in way that engages their attention and doesn’t bore them. Studying is fun for me when it’s not all about just reading and writing, I like to be engaged with the lecture rather than just listening and memorizing. As a kid that has a problem with their mental health, I think they need to upgrade their way of teaching students and istg they’ll see visible results
Yup always got Fs in math and barely passed the year. Until I took pre calculus and the teacher taught so well I was always getting As and actually understood what I was doing for once, the following year I decided to take statistics as she was teaching and same thing, As. Best feeling knowing I wasn’t a complete dumbass
Great inspiring movie and real life story. What I think is most unexpected, is the fact that this teacher (Jaime Escalante), demonstrated decades ago that the most crucial piece in the educational system is the teacher itself. I mean, he alone inspired and properly educated generations of succesful students in the SAME conditions other teachers failed. He had a real impact, and that alone is being studied today by the Australina professor John Hattie and his discoveries on visible learning wich demostrate that most students all over the world respond and perform consistently acording to the teacher, his methods and feedback rather than the enviroment, the curricula, the hours, etc. Revolutionary findings to say the least. Good luck.
True its like stundents think they hate chemistry but what they actually dont Like is the teach with a different teacher the subject suddenly becomes enjoyable.
@@journeyoflife9159 that actually happened to me in college. I honestly dislike Math, but the professor I got made see math in a very different way now.
I was fortunate enough to hear him speak at the University of South Carolina in 2002ish. He was exactly as the movie portrayed him. He said students will rise to the level you expect of them. His famous line, “You can do it Johnny, I know you can.” was exactly how he treated his students. He didn’t accept them saying they couldn’t do something, but he also made sure to give them the tools they needed to accomplish their tasks. He was everything I wanted to be as a teacher.
We do, but the “good ones” have way better options than teaching. Especially in LA, where a good teacher working as many hours as Escalente did would be making easily around $16 an hour after taxes.
I remember my mother making me attend his math program during my middle school years and surprisingly, his workbook and methods really helped me a lot.
It depends. Most start well, with good intentions, work hard, and are professionals. But many lose the vigor and wish to teach because of the students, especially professors in the high schools, they have the toughest job as teachers. In basic schools, it is not easy, but not that hard as in high schools, in university it is a pleasure to be a professor, people come to actually learn.
It's hard when society in the US looks down on teachers. I used to teach adults and even then the attitude by employers after I went back to the private sector was not favorable.
@@LordToxygene I live in Europe, so I don't have a good picture about the societal stance toward teachers and professors in the USA, naturally, I have seen things in films, but I can't rely on that because those are too pronounced and are giving a bad impression, like the thing schools are really places where there is a lack of discipline. But, I bet that there are differences, for better or for worse.
The man took a bunch of students at a level where he had to tell them -(-1) is 1, and managed to teach them all calculus, one of the most infamous school subjects there is
The smartest guy in my class was Hispanic. He always working with his family and we didn't understand how he was so far ahead of us. I asked him and he said "hard work my boy". til this day, those words from a peer still sticks with me. He became my inspiration in college as I would think about what he said every time I hit a mental block. Just wanted to put that out there.
Thank you for sharing. This is a true story. The movie shows only a part of his success. He is respected by outstanding politicians like George Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Rest in peace Jaime Escalante.
You forgot to mention that the unexpected student the gangster guy who was peer pressure to not study and study on the down low had the highest grade from all students.
I had some of the laziest teachers in middle school and high school back in the early 2000's. They'd show movies like this throughout the semester instead of teaching.
Such great teacher are rare gems to be found investing their time and effort and creating a child career is not an easy task. Hats off to such teachers❤️
I think there are similar movies like that in two different versions. But this one seems to be the first and more impressive. Anyways Respect to the teachers like Escalante. The world needs more like him.
@@justanotherhuman8311 I mean this is based on a true story so plot similarity or not, you can’t discredit this movie. Jaime Escalante was a real person and Garfield High School is a real school.
My teacher i had when i was 13 years old i still remmember, im 27 now. He taught me so manny things as a misbehaving kid. Thanks mr steel 😊 it was his first year teaching and did a impact more then any teacher had for years of experience. Thank you!
This is based on a true story. The teacher died in the early 2000s. There is even an interview with some of the real students and how they became sucessful in life because (Kemo) Escalante pushed them to reach for something better.
Most often the students are blamed for their achievements, while most often it's the teachers inability to interact with them. Nothing personal against the teachers that often work hard, but interconnection is not always easy to achieve
Only had ONE teacher in my entire life all th way to graduate school that reached out md connected like this. Mr Barringer from 9th grade English. His valyes stuck with me all the way through.
what a great film for someone who missed out on proper education these students didn't know how lucky they were having Escalente as their teacher, if I could go back to being 14 again jeez i wouldn't waste a minute I'd sit at the front of all classes, never miss a day, study every day and make sure although everyone gave up on me, I didn't give up on myself and actually achieved decent things in life.
I had a teacher like this for science in high school. Retired Marine Corp colonel. High energy, really high standards. I failed his class and he was a jerk but it left a lasting impression on my life.
My all time favorite movie. Although i didn't go to this school, I live in LA and this movie is so relatable. We all have a teacher that believes in us more than ourselves.
Being a teacher is the world's most noble profession. Nobody takes a teaching post to drive a ferrari. Its really because of that sense of service that people want to teach
There's a similar "concept" (even tho this is real) where in the anime/manga GTO (Great teacher Onizuka) teaches the worst class in this school life lesson instead of normal history, math etc.. It's a great manga/anime you should read/watch
This i love ! We all have much more potential if we only try harder ! To believe in your talents and developing those and discovering all fields should be the main task of schools and parents !not only career and money ! Money is just a lubricant for your ambition
I was blessed enough to have been taught math for 2 years by a teacher who won the Jaime Escalante Award those two years I was his student. He truly made math so fun and amazing while demanding results at the same time. I’m 44 and we are talking 7-8 grade. but I still vividly remember him always saying “Math is Sexy!” We’d have to draw hearts around our final answers, use different but correct colors, shapes, etc. It really worked! I passed the Calculus AP exam as a junior in high school, 99% because of my match teacher. And, yes, I still hate match!
I am one of those lucky bastards who had always great teachers. Apart from a few all my teachers were always great Well maybe me giving an effort also made it easier they still have always been patient l with me hence I always call my fav 3 every holiday. I think that is the best way to thank them.
Seen this movie twenty years ago. Is not just "teaching", is understanding that we all are humans. If people are treated with respect, young or old, they give their best.
