What's so scary is this happens more than we really know. My married now 23 year old daughter's H.S. teacher texted her something that "looked innocent " when I questioned. It freaked me and my daughter out. He was her fav teacher up till that point. Then after she graduated, he sent her a message on FB, again "that looked" innocent, but nothing inappropriate. But to me, he was trying to see if she would respond and if she did, I guarantee he would have pursued her.

They are no longer together. I discovered through finding her Facebook, she now is in a new healthy relationship, seems to be in a much better place mentally, and lives in a coast California town. I am happy that she moved on from this horrible phase of life, but its sad that the whole world (or 750,000 viewers) shared in this awkward and hard life lesson.

Look, as humans, we're going to debate these kinds of issues, because you will never have unanimous agreement when you declare that any particular number is the threshold for appropriate behaviors in society. There are people that will always think even 21 is too young to be drinking alcohol, there are people that think marijuana should not be legalized for ANY reason, there are people that believe marriage should not be allowed for gays. You're not always going to have a consensus answer on things, and there will always be particular intriguing cases that lend themselves to thoughtful consideration, because they're generally atypical, and yet by their very nature, reveal a lot of things about society as a whole and where we stand on things on average. That's not true. I don't agree with this relationship, but you shouldn't say that 18 yr olds don't know what love is. I started dating my husband when I was 13. I would say by 15, we really knew what love was and we were in love. We married at 21. We are 36. We knew what love was, still do. Signed, happily married mother of 2.

It looks to me, the girl missed a father figure since her dad passed away when she was 9. It is possible she was being confused with emotional emptiness of her childhood without dad. Then, she met this male teacher and somehow in a twisted way fall in love with him hoping he would reward her childhood pain. If he was really genuinely a nice person, I think he could have acted as an example instead of dating his minor student. Obviously, he was going through mid-life crisis where he grew tired of his wife and supporting his three kids was no longer his interest. He wanted a change with a young attractive girl who is a lot younger than his wife. Even if this is true love, the longevity of their relationship is questionable because a man like him is indecisive and will never be committed to one thing. If either one of them is capable of thinking in long term they would not have acted outs of hasty.

She lost her father when she was 9, doesn't he see that's what she's looking for, another father not a lover? He's the adult, he should realize that, and not take advantage of a confused child.
