The pros and cons of a teaching career are explored in detail through this video. People looking to get started in a career in education need to see this video to get an ideas of what this job is all about. Some of the positives of having a teaching career include vacation time that is afforded to teachers during the summer months. Other positives include getting out of school at 3:00. Teachers have the luxury of tenure whereas individuals in other professions do not have this luxury. Also, don't forget that teachers get to actually use education they have learned in college. Then there are some of the cons, the negatives that come with a career in teaching. The negatives include the massive amounts of paperwork that comes with the job. Teachers are forced to meet the high expectations of standardized testing. Unfortunately, teachers are held to a higher standard compared to other professions. It is very difficult to deal with some of your students. Behavioral and Emotional students can really make life difficult for teachers.

I just started my secondary education degree and honestly the pro that’s keeping me in it is the impact on students. During these times and this new generation they need someone they can count on someone who can help guide them to adulthood. That’s what pushes me is that I could make a huge difference in a young one’s life, that I can help them realize their dreams and how to achieve them

Speaking as a teacher there’s no way in heck that we leave at 3. Our contract PAYS us until that time but in no way does anyone leave at that time! There’s too much paperwork to grade, lesson plans, meetings, messages to respond to from parents or conferences with parents or even phone calls with parents, never ending paperwork etc. etc. Most teachers I know myself included leave a good 1 or 2 hours after our contract to catch up in just one days work!

Teaching is among the most important jobs in a society, but the pay is.ridiculous in comparison to the responsibility and the necessary qualifications. With the a comparable university degree you could rather start a career in business and earn twice or three times as much. What good is it to be out of school at 3 o'clock, but having to work a second job? Therefore, definitely not worth the effort. Only in Germany and Switzerland teachers are paid a decent salary.

Ill soon start pre university to become an english teacher in a couple years, im very hesitant when it comes to choosing a future career but i love learning new languages and teaching people about them, my original language is french but of course i speak english, spanish and while not perfect at all im currently learning japanese and soon after ill learn chinese. Im wondering if english teacher was the right choice because i have no clue what im getting into. I just know ill have vacation which is a very important thing for me cause i want a family, my pay, while probably not as much as it should be for the amount of work ill give, will not be garbage and will let me live at least without too much concern. And finally i want something that wont require me to stay in my office 24/7 having paperwork after paperwork. Ik this will absolutely require paperwork but the relationship i could have with my students could balance with that fact. Anyway, in brief id like to know your opinion as an english teacher if you still think as of today is becoming an english teacher a good idea?

Going to school for teaching is amazing. Spent 4 years in the army, until medically retirement, so I already get 4k a month from the VA. So the money was never the issue. I had already gotten an associates in writing paid for by the army while serving, So I decided to teach, a change of pace, and I love writing and reading others writing as well. The job just feels right. Also the army is paying for the bachelors in education so another plus. Being able to impact kids lives and maybe catch their interest in writing is my goal and why I love the future of teaching.

Yes they do. They are just so used to staying late and working on grading or planning that they don't want to be the first ones to leave. We are the only profession that works after hours and at home for free. Whenever teachers find the courage to stop acting like they enjoy working for free the districts will stop expecting it. Been in this silliness 26 years and I walk to my car at 2:50.

Jack Wilde I can’t speak for all teachers but I know that where I go to school at. A good amount of teachers told me that they made 6 figures and live good. but they have been working for the district for at least a couple years. If you just start you would be making less, so it depends based off your lifestyle and where you live and where you work. But for the most part you should be able to live comfortably if you manage your finances right, because you could be making 100k+ and where you live could be to expensive.

This is why a friend went into tutoring instead after majoring in Chemistry (and minor in food science) in university. Charge $5 per person per 1 hour group session for general chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, and biochemistry. And $10 if it’s a day or two right before the exam. For organic chemistry ALONE 50-100 people will show up to be tutored about these damn reactions. Now do that 8 hours a day and you make a ton of money. Granted, it’s highly dependent on how many students show up, and summers and the first few weeks of spring and fall will be very slow income, but it ramps up really quickly. Can also make enough money to hire people to help you. I know this works really well with chemistry and physics, but I’m unsure if it works as well with biology, calculus, diffEQ, and other typically difficult classes

If I’m gonna teach I might aswell go for a PhD and become a professor and make double or sometimes triple of what a Secondary Hs teacher makes... But I will agree teachers are underpaid on top of all the responsibilities. but the vacation time is very attractive..
@levibeam100
@levibeam100 4 года назад
Are teachers underpaid? Probably. But Depending on the state, you can get a starting salary of 60-80K(At least where I live) Now obviously that is the extreme, and most start at 30-50, but if you don’t live in a big city, that is very good for starting. In my state you get paid the more you work so if I went for secondary education and we started school at the same time, I’d be working 6-8 more years than you, and my pay would increase a ton. Obviously there are also tons of pros to getting a PHD. I’m not dissing you’re interest, in the long run DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO. I’m just saying there’s two sides to every coin and both sides are both worth looking at
@marksinclair2592

In Texas Dallas and Fort Worth/ San Antonio and Houston average starting salaries are around $43,000-48,000 for a high school teacher. It’s a live-able Income if you are really tight with money. I’m not interested in becoming a teacher and they’re underpaid in Texas in my opinion there are certain school districts that pay more but those are a lot harder to get in with as they’re known to hire “by who you know” southlake is a prime example, Keller ISD and some posh districts north Texas. Small town schools here teachers don’t even crack 40k after years of teaching...

It depends on the state as well as College/University. I am in Georgia and taught part time at the community college. My mentor (who had a PhD) was full time professor and even had additional designation so he should get paid well. But no, his annual salary is nothting compared to a public school secondary teacher with a Master's degree, and even less if you have a PhD. This is what discouraged me from going full time in that college for even as a professor its not worth it salary wise. Maybe in bigger universities.

Professors in community colleges are rarely full-time, they are part-time. They usually teach one to three classes a week. This does not give them benefits or much salary. This is what my professors tell me at any rate. Maybe it's different at four-year colleges

Wow ... so many misconceptions ... where to start? *(1)* Vacations. Yes, teachers do get many days off. But it's always the same days, they do not get to choose when to take off. It's nice to take off the summer, but realize that's when everyplace you wish to go is crowded and most expensive. The beach, national parks, camping, just about anywhere. And if you're married to someone who isn't a teacher it's hard on them as well. And trust me, if you're a higher level teacher (Chemistry, Physics, Calculus) weekends and evenings aren't your own; making up those tests and lab assignments will eat all those hours up and then some. *(2)* No Upward Mobility. This one is pretty much self-explanatory. Even if you wish to leave teaching there exists a stigma outside of education that hiring teachers is a no-no. Even if you pursue another career by going back to school, if they know you were a teacher they pretty much will shut you out. It is an unwritten rule --- no former teachers. They have the misconception that teachers do not live in the 'real world' ... whatever that means. *(3)* Poor Salary. Because teaching in many states requires you be in the teacher's union, your salary is locked to whatever is negotiated. And it doesn't matter how good you are, what you teach or anything else. The only way to make a decent salary is through years of experience --- if you can stick it out. And some districts will actually make it hard on teachers with higher pay so that they might leave to reduce district salaries. *(4)* You work around the clock should you have higher level courses. Yet you will be paid the same as everyone else. I can go on, but for now you should see that it's not all that you might think it is. Sure ... there are benefits, but they come at a cost. And that cost, unlike most everywhere else, is much more than just doing a good job.

The negatives far outweigh the positives: 1. A parent have all the legal power and none of the responsibilities for their child's education. When a student fails a standardized test, the parent does not lose her or his job. 2. Many administrators are failed or burned-out former teachers who should be out of education. 3. Insubordination laws prevent teachers, including tenured, from speaking their minds on issues like busy work and being treated with disrespect by administrators. 4. IP's (Improvement Plans) can be given to teachers without any prior warning. The union will not stand for those teachers for public relation reasons. 5. Tenure means nothing when paperwork is being directed against them. It only gives them a year or two before they are terminated. STAY OUT OF TEACHING!
