I’ve returned back to Korea now despite the amazing experiences that I had in the U.K.

Oh, well. That’s quite an informative video! Thanks for your honesty, also. I highly appreciated, you really gave me an inside view! Since it is an English speaking country, the English teachers in state schools give actually nothing like EFL lessons, unsurprisingly. They dive into the English literature and sometimes drama and media, all of which are just not for me lol. I think most ESL teachers get unemployed within school terms since the language courses often have traffic in summer, another drawback.. But for the overall experience and particularly for those willing to see the England, it is great. I just won’t go there for anything like saving money lol. Have a good day, sir!

I am pleased that you enjoyed this video. I tried to be as candid as possible regarding the benefits and the drawbacks. The fact that everything grinds to a halt by the winter is a factor why there is much turnover in the EFL industry in the UK as well as the miserable pay, after many invest in their CPD and various qualifications. This is another reason I ended up back in South Korea.

This has been so useful. I appreciate your frank approach to this. It is really good to have a sense of your lived experience back here in the British Isles! Thanks for taking the time to make this video! :)

Omg, thank you so much I've taught EFL abroad a few times and everytime I come back to UK I go into mainstream education. I have always wondered what EFL is like as a job in uk and of I should switch but had no idea what its like in uk. Thanks for you so much for your video. Maybe more transparent videos on topic.

As I’m no longer working in the U.K., perhaps it’s now about time that I share some more videos about the difficulties that I had there. 😊

Sadly in UK ESOL teachers its hard. Even state funding places. College and educational places only care how much funding and money they will make. Teachers lose out in terms of paya and mental health

Thank you for this insightful video Martin. I am considering undertaking a CELTA course in the UK but currently have no idea how to investigate what kind of teaching opportunities would exist for teaching EFL both in my native UK and abroad. Can you offer any pointers on this topic?

Have you ever taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in your home country? If so, how was your experience?

Do you have experience in teaching ESOL in colleges?

In India english is not just a language but a parameter of how elite u r. it is difficult to make young teenagers understand that it is a language and they need not copy every line frm d 'F.R.I.E.N.D.S' series. My students are always behind the accent and not the pronunciation. at tyms i jb to plan lesson dedicated to just 'Pronunciation am not Accent'.

@N I, I do have experience of teaching ESOL but with a charity and used to help out with immigrants and asylum seekers looking to settle within the U.K. I’ve never taught ESOL within a College setting but if I had, I’m sure it would have been enjoyable.

@Zeynab, thank you for sharing. Have you looked at the Phonemic Chart with students? It is wonderful and there are so many activities you can incorporate when teaching with the chart.

Hello, and thanks for the info. As an international graduate with MA in Applied Linguistics from a UK university as well as TESOL and CELTA, is it really a viable option to find EFL teaching jobs in the private sector that doesn't require QTS?

Bearing in mind the necessity of finding visa sponsorship as well
