Hi! I'm an elementary public school English teacher with the EPIK program in South Korea. The year 2020 marks the 4th year I will be teaching here, so today I want to share with you 10 reasons why I love my job teaching with EPIK because it's part of the reason why I've chosen to stay in Korea so long.

I was an EPIK teacher for a year way back in 2012-13. Best years of my life now that I look at it because it helped develop me into a better person. Most of it was the time I had off and what I could accomplish toward my own personal projects. Just like you, I am black as well and felt the impact I made on one kid was profound. On the last day, he gave me a letter saying he thought I looked scary, but it changed his opinion after I turned out to be nice and caring. This was my first teaching experience, and funny as I came back and am now a high school teacher in the US. Amazing how this was in my list of recommendations and hope you continue to do what works best for you!

I just found out about your channel from Ollie’s reaction to your apt tour. I’m preparing myself to apply for EPIK Fall ‘21 (so hype 😁). This video is super helpful, and your spirited outlook is a joy to watch! I’m in my early 30s and super excited that these opportunities exist (when I was in my early 20s, I’d never heard of such a thing). Your #10...girl. That’s exactly what I aspire to. It’s beautiful to see another brown girl in SK living her best life and taking full advantage of such an opportunity. You have a new subscriber ♥️

Im excited to graduate and head over to South Korea! I never thought teaching was something i wanted to do. It was always either nursing or the business field, because i always hear about having a set job with one of those careers, and good pay, etc. And for teaching I've always heard that teachers don't get pay enough, but apparently its enough in Korea, so I think ill be good LOL Plus i am so excited to work with kids! I knew that i always wanted to work with kids. The main reason was because you never know what a kid is going through at home, and i want them to feel loved and care for at school at least, and make them happy! :) Btw i love your videos!!!

Erynn Noel hi! I’m so glad you enjoy my videos 😊 as far as I know yes there still is still a pretty big demand for teachers here in Korea (although obviously right now things are a bit skewed due to the virus). That may change though for better or for worse once things start getting back to normal, but it’s kind of a let’s wait and see kind of thing. Sorry I can’t give you a more definitive answer, but I wish you all the best when you finally make the jump to teach out here next year! 😊

Hi Tayler. I'm not sure if you'll see this comment or respond, but i was looking to apply to EPIK for the fall 2021 semester and wanted to ask how you dealt/deal with being a foreigner in SK. I also wanted to ask how EPIK felt about candidates with mental health issues who have to be on medications (me). Thanks!

Hey! I’ve been working in a similar program to EPIK but in Spain for four school years. Watching your videos I feel like I agree with practically all the good things and challenges that you have because I feel like I have seen them too! I am curious though if by doing EPIK there is room to advance professionally beyond the program in Korea? Like, are you able to move up and move on into a permanent position there? Could you become a school teacher for example? Do people see themselves as wanting and/or being able to set down permanent roots in Korea after having been there doing programs like EPIK for multiple years?
@taylerwithane
@taylerwithane 4 года назад
Hi! Unfortunately there is no room to advance professionally doing this program and it does not really lead to any permanent teaching positions in Korea. This program is mostly seen as a temporary job for people doing it. There are teachers who do want to stay in Korea more permanently which in that case they either settle remaining at the pretty much the level professionally during their time in Korea, try to fulfill the requirements to get a different visa which opens up more job opportunities, or marry a Korean citizen.
@taylerwithane
@taylerwithane 4 года назад
What is like in Spain?
@amyjoy2021
@amyjoy2021 4 года назад
In terms of room for professional advancement, it is similar to what you describe happens in Korea. Although I do know that some people seem to manage making the jump from a guest native English teacher to a real teacher or some other type of permanent job, it takes a ton of patience, tenacity and some good luck and connections (or if not, a Spanish or European partner haha).
