This is part 2 in a two part series on teaching listening and deals with bottom up processing - what it is, why it's difficult for learners and some strategies for practicing it in class. I play this for my ESL students every semester. Even though it is meant for teachers, it really opens up students' eyes to what they are facing. I always tell them this is meant for teachers, but explains a lot about listening. It inspired me to do dictation in class and students are always very absorbed. I take about 20 very short lines of easy text on a subject we're studying and dictate. Thank you so much for this wonderfully clear and helpful resource.

Thank you! We've just learned these theories, but they look quite abstract to me. Thank you for your vivid explanation!

Thanks for a great summary of what many would need some time to read and comprehend in John Field's book. It would be great if you could make more summaries of the book.

Thank you very much, Jo! Another great video with useful tips! May I ask a question? What's the name of the sound track used at the beginning of the video? It's a nice one :-) Regards, Raymond (from Exeter).

+Raymond Wan Thanks for your kind comments. It's called 'Letter of Intent' and comes with Camtasia. I like it, too :)

+elttraining Thanks for your prompt reply, Jo! One more thing, I forgot to thank you for your help (when I was doing the Cambridge CELTA, I referenced 1 of your videos for assignment 4 - Lessons from the Classroom). Also, I've been watching your videos for my continuing professional development. The videos are really helpful for the MEd TESOL programme which I'm taking here at Exeter University. Please keep posting more splendid videos with lovely music :-). I'll let my classmates know about ELT-Training.com. Regards, Raymond

This might sound silly, but have you published a study on this or know any published studies on this? I'm doing a review of literature and what you say in this video is perfect.

Ana Santiago -hi! There’s loads in the literature about listening (none of it by me!). Try John Field as a starting point- a seminal work is ‘Listening in the Language Classroom’. Hope that’s helpful. Jo
