The Gilded Age American Heiress Exhibition opened to the public here at Mapperton on the 5th May. However, if you can’t make it in person you can buy a ticket (3 cups of coffee) for a virtual hour long tour with me, and support this ongoing project over at www.buymeacoff...
A new exhibition offers a glimpse into the captivating world of Alberta Sturges Montagu, the 9th Countess of Sandwich, and an American Heiress from the renowned era known as The Gilded Age.
Curated by Mapperton’s very own American Viscountess, Julie Montagu, the "American Heiress" collection is comprised of more than 10,000 previously unseen letters exchanged between Alberta (Sturges) Montagu and her family, as well as the peerage at large.
Dating from 1888 to 1951, these letters constitute the largest unpublished private collection of correspondence from the period. They offer a remarkable glimpse into the life of a "dollar bride" during the Gilded Age, shedding light on both triumphs and struggles.
The exhibition takes innovation to the next level by introducing Alberta AI, a ground-breaking creation that brings her story to life like never before.
“With the aid of cutting-edge AI technology, we've resurrected Alberta's voice, allowing her to answer visitors’ burning questions about her remarkable journey,” says Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke.

As an American, who lived in England for 20 years, I will say that there is no amount of education Luke can provide that compensates for Julie’s American energy and enthusiasm and creativity and problem-solving.

The use of burnt limestone as a fertilizer was first used in the colonies in US county of Loudoun, VA. By the 1700s, soils in the US South had been depleted and become very acidic from growing tobacco. Adopted from the English invention in 1758, using lime as a fertilizer restored the soil. By the Revolutionary War, the soils were healthy enough for Loudoun to become the breadbasket of the new nation with its bountiful wheat and corn fields.

Lol. Loved the episode. You both are very entertaining together. And as a fellow American, it is funny to hear a British husband say he hopes to see his wife finally smile today. When we Americans think of British we don't envision them smiling. British are usually so stoic and proper in what we see and Americans are laid back relaxed. It is nice to see your smiling British fun husband. You both are great for each other. God bless you!

Without even trying, you two definitely rival Laurel and Hardy (minus the extra pounds/stone)! Luke, you definitely hit the nail on the head with your tour of the lavatories at Mapperton - the tour all of us have wanted to see, but were too polite to ask! The sheer variety is impressive, but the history is also very interesting. I knew about Mr. Crapper's invention, but have always thought it the height of injustice that he made such an important contribution to human health and comfort, and his name became a swear word. And Julie, your reaction to Luke's cheating at croquet was totally appropriate. You definitely won!

What about the phrase “bathroom”? When I was visiting family in Cornwall, they would always ask me if I was going to take another bath. I said no I’m just going in to use the toilet. By the time we finish the conversation on what the needed function should be called. I had completely lost the urge. their first WC was outside of the kitchen in a little attached wing that had served another purpose previously. After “the war “, a room upstairs was divided into two rooms, one of which had a toilet with sink and the other had a shower.

I totally agree with Luke on the words for the “restroom”… it was the one thing I hated in Australia and the UK that the word for the lavatory was “toilet” seems very vulgar to me! (Also always thrown when I see a sign for a rental unit and it says “to let” looks like toilet!) We use “bathrooms” or “restrooms” in the USA but there are some vulgar words for the “potty”, such as my husband’s military term “head”….
@alexk7973
@alexk7973 25 дней назад
I guess it‘s my very direct german-ness that just thinks calling a toilet-room or so called half-bath anything other than a toilet is somewhat ridiculous. There is no bath in it - so why would I call it a bathroom. Also, I‘m not going to „rest“ in it, so why would I call it a restroom. I have to agree, the English pronunciation of „toilet“ does have a rather ugly oi-sound, and the German pronunciation isn‘t much better, but restroom and bathroom have always seemed incredibly silly to me. Water-closet is somewhat better, but always makes me giggle a bit, imagining a prepper hoarding an entire closet full of water bottles. There is a funny „polite“ German way of saying you are going to the wc and that‘s to say „to go around the corner“. Which again is pretty funny, like you‘ll just walk around a corner and pick a wall or tree or something? I‘m always amazed at how weird and shameful we humans find normal bodily functions 😂

We Australians still use so many English words, that it is strange to hear Julie not knowing what they mean. America is definitely a foreign place to visit language wise to us! Food wise as well. We are a fish & chip country but with the invasion of McDonald's we were introduced to the french fries. Yes our packets of chips are called crisps as they are thinly sliced potatoes dried & baked or deep fried. French Fries are slightly larger than what we used to buy in the 1950/60s called potato straws which are really bad for your health these days with the bad oils used for cooking. I still remember when the fats changed over to oils in the 1960s & chips lost that yummy flavour not to mention the fish & chip shop suddenly didn't smell as nice either. p.s. Listening to Julie all excited in the bathing house & remembering the episode of when she actually went swimming in it & the laughter was bubbling up at the memory of that particular day!! Those two episodes should be recorded back to back!!🤣🤣🤣

I laughed all the way through this!!! So much fun to watch.. I watch and wonder if any of my European relatives walked there, worked there, etc.. and the thing about the Crappers and bummers, so so enjoyable. Thank you
