Teaching My Horse To Jump Confidently : Part One - using an interesting method called free jumping!

My horses love to jump over fences and poles - they really do. But as the stakes and the fences got higher, we all lost some of our natural confidence. We all know that a rider's confidence is crucial to successful horse riding and jumping - but the horse's confidence is equally important. This video shows how we're all getting back to our natural jumping style - and getting back to enjoying it all too. Remember though - horse riding is risky. Mind how you go! Sandra.

I’ve been thinking of training my 20yo mare to jump. She’s lovely on the flat, but had some feet troubles before I got her and even until a few years ago. She finally has nice hooves, but still lacks confidence. Part of that is me of course, as I haven’t actually jumped in years. Not looking for anything big though. Like a few good six inch jumps, or about 15-16cm jumps, would make me happy. I know she could probably do a good bit higher, like two feet or 60cm, but honestly no need for that. This is the first video I have found that isn’t about starting a young horse.

Oh, some horse content! Love it, I just adore Irish Cobs, wonderful animals. I actually was supposed to visit an Irish Cob breeder near Cologne this weekend, but that (like everything else) had to be cancelled, of course. Hope, you’re all well!

My first pony Charlie is a traditional cob, but he defied all the stereotypes!! He easily jumped 1.20m courses with 12 troops me and our highest fence was around 1.50m at our yard during a Puissance, I was against one of the yards’ best riders who was on his Grand Prix mare! All odds were against me but Charlie was such a cool dude and cleared it 😍😍 He’s now 23 and retired, my parents have bought me a lovely showjumping Connemara called Kodak, I’m super excited about him!

When I was iced in, I used the small arena in the mornings while I mucked out etc. Then we had free jumping for mare, yearling, and a four year old, each jump had a log for Baby and mum, and they loved it, looked a bit mad as sometimes doing figure of eights, sometimes three in unison, horses were so happy, a mini herd..... In the afternnon I took Baby out in hand, and drove the 4 year old in long reins. The mare was quite docile, but she would not let me handle Baby for about six months, but once she realised Baby was safe we had no separation anxiety.

Is there any chance you make a video with some tips on how to gain confidence with horses or even how to just act confident to trick the horses into not knowing your weakness..? I'm wanting to improve around my mums horses and at 27 i still cant get over the fear from being almost rolled on by a shire horse as a small child, so needless to say I would very much appreciate it haha thank you and I hope you're all well and keeping safe.

I set up my round pen panels in a donut on a incline with PVC pipes at the bottom of the hill ,a third of the way up the fence to train my miniature horses every year once a day for an hour,a minimum of a month before the show we hoast then through out the rest of the show season afterward. Although I don't know if that is possible this year the miniature horse shows on the west coast have already postponed due to the pandemic I don't want to lose 10 Grand on the fairgrounds because none of my competitors or friends showed up I would rather spend the money on a tractor and homesteading supplies and aquaculturing equipment shoot I could go to discover live steam and by a steam locomotive with that kind of money I hope mother chooses wisely and we don't have a loss or even any of my friends have losses with their shows
@WayOutWestx2

Advice coming from someone that has worked with horses all of my life. The dogs were very unnerving for the horses, even if they know the dogs, been around the dogs all of their lives, it is still very unsettling for horses trying to focus on something with dogs that are barking and making a ruckus while doing so. It gets them off of their training and that is one of the reasons that Flora was lashing out at you, not because you were giving her a mental challenge. She was simply lashing out at someone that is supposed to be in control of something she could not seemingly do anything about. The same was happening with the other horses. The dogs, when taken out of the scenario, should get you more success on focus.
@WayOutWestx2
@WayOutWestx2 4 года назад
Thanks Debbie B, but I disagree with you on this one. In the video. This might apply to your own situation with your dogs and horses. But I acutally used clips in this video with dogs and no dogs, and the actual clip where Flora has a go at me has no dogs barking or being present in the background. In my experience, and I work with my horses most days, it does not make one bit of difference to the horses whether the dogs are present or not. Flora has a very close relationship with me, too close maybe, and it is clearly about me and her what she tries to express. This is the whole point of free work - that the horse works with the human but is allowed to express more than usual, provided that the human ensures his/her own safety.

You guys need to be careful with the gypsies make sure they don't have hock problems. Because I have a gypsy too and someone must have messed him up because now he has hock problems. it's not safe with a gypsy to jump because they're meant for pulling not for jumping. I really need to make a video about how high and how much you should jump your gypsy.
@WayOutWestx2
@WayOutWestx2 4 года назад
You are making a good point there. Yes, cob horses have been bred in a certqain way, and their main strength is to pull things, but they are still horses, and all horses have the physical ability to jump. I wouldn;t force mine, but they actually enjoy it I think. About the hock issue you mention. Some horses have trouble with this, yes. The key is to do a proper warm-up, give the horses plenty of different work to do, and a lot of rest if there is any issue of lameness. Hope yours recovers well.

Dr Morgan, criticism can be useful....when it is contructive, it will give the receiver an opportunity to reflect and learn, but the way you do it, it is just plain negativity. Don't bother with comments like this, nobody is gaining from them as we don't know what you are talking about. Just let us know exactly what you think could be done better so we can all benefit from your knowledge. Thank you.
@drmorgan2101
@drmorgan2101 4 года назад
I am a retired professional who has been a competitor from coast to coast, a clinician and recognized judge who charges for the advice you ask me to give. I recommend you read George Morris, Bert Denemethy (sp), Padolfsky and any of the older books you can find on classical horsemanship.
@drmorgan2101
@drmorgan2101 4 года назад
Also, you published the video which could cause someone who is uneducated to follow your advice resulting in an accident which is a hazard even under the best circumstances. Please be careful!
@WayOutWestx2
@WayOutWestx2 4 года назад
Thanks for your concern, but...we know your life story now and your career path as well as the books you like, but we still don't know what your actual criticism is. I have hardly time to fish randomly for it in three or more books! If you are so serious about safety and worry about others, you should in this instance just make an exception and tell us what you know for free. I have thought about your initial comment and came to the conclusion that maybe you think we try to do join up work? What we do is free work with horses, very different from join up/round pen. It's all about the horse expressing himself/herself in a fenced in space, with the human giving some minimal direction. Yes, my horses kick and buck during the sessions but that it part of the work. My job is to keep them at a safe distance from me, therefore the whip. Maybe this did not come across clearly enough in this video, I might just clarify again in part 2....
