I passed there this morning, and people driving 15 and 20 over the speed limit in the fog and smoke, and about 1/3 of the people didn't even have their lights on. Most people drive like morons these days.
I agree I see this all the time as a truck driver in different parts of the country and for some reason people want to drive at a high speed when the fog is heavy and weather is bad
Have been in these conditions where 2 truckers communicated on CB radio that one stay in slow lane and one get in fast lane. They both proceeded at a safe speed, about 30 mph, slowing everyone down to a safe speed. The above average truckers took control of situation. This was around 30 years ago.
"Above average" Nah, I know some truckers. This ain't above average for them. Some some the kindest, most considerate people I ever met are or have been truckers.
Horrible. I remember this happened in Canada a few years ago with lots of fatalities also. I'd HATE to be driving and encounter that type of thing. I've driven in thick fog before, but thankfully it was VERY early in the morning and I had the "luxury" of driving very slow because there was almost no traffic at all and I took the long way to work. My condolences to all involved in this terrible event.
When I lived in Japan, my hubby told me that the Japanese that he worked with told him they have to take a professional drivers course and can drive at the age of 21. I think the course actually last 2 years. They need to do that in this country.
Fog is bad from time to time in this area I've seen 1st hand, But what I will never understand IS speed limits Are posted for "ideal Conditions" therefore when NOT ideal like thick fog, SLOW DOWN & have more space between each car than the Law states 1 car length for every 10 MPH. But sadly 99% of the time on I-55 most drivers drive over the speed limit & rarely slow down even if its not ideal conditions.
So sad, especially since it's often the worst drivers that survive these conditions, and the people that recognized there was a need to slow down are often in smaller vehicles that are more vulnerable. This makes me think 5 year mandatory driving tests should be instated.
Pile ups get bigger as people go faster, nobody knows how to adjust to conditions anymore and it boggles the mind as to how they passed a drivers exam. SLOW DOWN PEOPLE AND LEAVE PLENTY OF DISTANCE.
At five am today I'm driving 55 and people first period co up t uck honking his horn swerving around me. This was elsewhere but welcome to the "me first" idiots on the road. They just HAVE to BE FIRST and there you go Also, holy fog early by 8 days, that happens on quite a few all souls days in Louisiana on Nov 1st Thomas 🙂
Actually this area has a name. I grew up down there. It's called Manchac on one side of bridge and Rudock on the other side. Midendorfs famous sea food restaurant in right there. Look in footage and you can see the old bridge on the side of this interstate. Back in the 70s a barge hit the highest point and people died and fell . My daddy's bf died on that day coming home from the refineries.
Did this fog descend immediately, like with absolutely no warning? Ask the drivers, why did they continue driving into the fog? Did they even try to slow down?
I live about 20 minutes from where it happened. The fog was so heavy yesterday, literally couldn't see a thing. Seeing those burned up cars next to the tanker has me sick to my stomach. Those poor people.
@@landonmichelle you know this is the worst thing that's happened in that spot. It's even worse than you can imagine vs. When the barge hit the old bridge. We lost dad's BFF on that tragedy.
I remember my wife telling someone at Ponchatoula Highschool (office worker/teacher?), as we were pulling our son OUT, to homeschool him, That Louisiana was 49th in education (at the time), only to hear this reply: "out of a hundred, that ain't BAD". For those of you wondering, there are still only fifty states in the United States. Still think the fog caused this crash?
People need to slow down I see it every day they drive 80 to 90 on I 55 all day everyday they need to start putting police on that road I seen them this morning with the fog flying
Over driving the visibility stopping distance was one of the first things I learned not to do. 1981, summer drivers ed. All common visibility situations were discussed in depth. The rest I learned over the last 40 years. I can't do it. I don't understand how people can. Giant testicles? Maybe its relatively cheap insurance?
Fog is simple just turn your flashers on and drive at a reasonable speed don't out drive your headlights. Leave your low brights on our just fog lamps if you have the just fog lamp option. LED headlights make fog worse. They say don't use flashers on the news report but people don't slow down without flashers for a warning.
Flashers are to be used ONLY in an emergency and fog, though dangerous, is NOT an emergency. The accident WAS an emergency, however, if people will take hold of the practice of maintaining a safe following distance, not speeding and keeping right except to pass, most interstate accidents would not occur. Self, kills. Figure it out or not, Louisiana.
The stupidity in Louisiana in bad weather is pitiful. Why can't yall slow down really its not a race track. The cops need to come back out on the highway and stop the stupidity to continue. Its not just la its across the hole country.
Yep, and the marsh fire, too. An EV went all Dukes of Hazzard off the road and exploded like in an action movie. My brother who works for Shell Oil told me, so it must be true.
Just think. They went to bed like each of us last night. Woke up got dressed and started on their way just like you and I. Except we're here to talk about their tragedy . Daddy was right. GOD doesnt promise us our next breath. Breathe wisely.
0:52 She is reporting from US 51 with I-55 in the background. It would be helpful if WWL-TV was more accurate in their reporting. That is one huge pile-up.
The Word of The Lord, Understand, The CHASTISEMENT OF THE LORD is upon the world. "Hark who goes there? It is I, DEVASTATION. I was sent from the Most Holy of Holy. My orders, to devastate the world, Believers, and Non-Believers. I have no prejudice, All are the same to me. "Not with bombs, not with guns, not with the violence of man, Its not over, The world will not be able to endure what is coming. Watch and PRAY. Qubth-ut-Allah.
So sad, many died not knowing Jesus. Not everyone goes to heaven. Many don't realize it till it's to late. Praying for all in this, the suffering is great
Shame on you for saying something so awful in such a tragic time. Bringing religion into this and under the breath saying some of them awaits hell. What the actual fck is wrong with you? If people like you go to heaven, then goodnight to us all
