Please oh please react to the Ultrakill Soundtrack I'm begging you please oh please it's almost christmas if u do this i can die happy but like no pressure
TF2 has a special place in my heart as a semi-retired gmod shitposter, soundtrack lives rent free in my head from the hours I spent feeding the enemy team on Harvest
11:30 I just realized they actually timed the medic's actions to the music! When he pushes up his glasses and flips the switch on his medigun, it's perfectly on beat.
I can't tell you how much I longed to see someone of your musical caliber finally, appreciate the amazing music thate is this score. Shame you can't hear a bit more of it in the game.
I love the video, but Im so mad you didn’t mention the saxophone solo in the Medic theme song, The fact that the soloist is completely being over shadowed by everyone else created the perfect chaotic atmosphere of the Medic himself
Valve's music during this time period was astounding. The music in L4D and L4D2 were fantastic, the heavy percussion that would build upon hoards of zombies added to the confusion and fear that you felt trying to survive.
it's insane how the soundtrack perfectly encapsulates the gameplay in every way possible, the chaos of the big band with the multiplayer deathmatch lobbies, constant death and fighting but everything is stylized in a cartoonishly way, taunts and such create this charming and fun place in a warzone, the mission impossible style instruments in the background as a constant reminder that the spy could be anywhere, it's just great a shame that they only used them in the trailers and main menu instead of the actual game the trailers enhance the songs so well i can't stop thinking about it whenever i listen to the songs themselves
dude, imagine if they had music for in the middle of battles, and it would dynamically change depending on if you're winning or losing... if you're winning it sounds more positive, and if you're losing it gets faster and more stressful
@@Tulip_bip I really wish tf2 had music playing during matches. Another class based game I play has a track for every map and it perfectly encapsulates the fast paced chaotic action it has, especially with overtime having it's own theme
“Chaotic Big Band” is the perfect name for this style of action/spy thriller music. To me, one of the best examples is the Archer theme, which builds up all the 60s secret agent tropes until it appropriately collapses in a hilarious mess of trumpets. Might be worth an analysis?
There is something just so special about the tone twist in "drunken pipe bomb" at around 01:04. It feels like you're in a safe place, and suddenly get raided by a hoard of angry Scotts. Here are some others that I really like: "Medic!" feels like a power fever dream. "The calm" is a brotherhood's call to arms. "Faster than a speeding bullet" is incredibly fast paced and adrenaline pumped.
and that one part in Medic! where the saxophone solo plays a screamer so the trumpets respond with an even HIGHER screamer and then vibrato a _screamer_
Would love to see you cover some of the other songs on this soundtrack. ROBOTS!, Rocket Jump Waltz, and A Little Heart to Heart are definitely on my list of favorites.
On one hand, the soundtrack was SO much better than it ever needed to be. But that's everything about TF2! ALL of it was better than it needed to be. Valve at at its best made games that were really good and would have sold wonderfully well but it went the extra several miles. Let's not forget that the music was recorded by Valve Studio Orchestra. Valve hired a goddamn orchestra! The release of Meet the Medic (and its music) was, in my eyes, the absolute height of Valve's powers.
The trailer for the Mann Vs. Machine update has one of my favorite pieces of music. That was seriously the most excited I was for anything in my entire life.
The theme called "The Calm" (and its counterpart theme, "Robots!") are some of the *stankiest* tracks. I break into a smile and stank face whenever those tracks on the ost come on, they're amazing. Loved TF2 ever since it's beta. Such an incredible game.
Team fortress is a timeless masterpiece. The gameplay, the style, the music. They’re all great! It’s nice seeing you breakdown those themes I heard a lot growing up Wow that’s amazing! I’ve always watched you but to be learning from you at that price. I’ll get myself one.
I’ve got about 3000 hours in Tf2 myself, the soundtrack is one of the reasons I and many others absolutely adore it. It creates the perfect cartoony action atmosphere that makes it so unique.
I am 100% convinced no one before or since has made, or will ever be able to make character intros as good as these. They're so goddamn fantastic, the detail in the animations, the inflexions in the voices and mood of the scenes, I never get tired of rewatching them. In fact, I think I'm due for a rewatch right now.
Dude i would LOVE LOVE LOVE if you covered all of the songs from this game in their entirety, it's such an amazing soundtrack from a game that everyone loves and I would kill to get some more of your insane in-depth knowledge on all of its pieces!
I have a brother whom dislikes music in his games. He'll turn it off. Man is a damn fool. To me the sound, the music is a massive critical part of the game. Great scores elevate a game and sub par ones find me wanting.
@@cooldebt it's unlikely it'd be jazz, being as he was subjected to that by a crazy aunt of ours. I am certain he doesn't hate music as I have seen him on occasions jamming out. I suppose he just has a funny way of appreciating music.
What's cool about the sound in tf2 too is that the main ideas heard here (moving up a minor third then back down, and moving down one half step) are also used in game as notification sounds. Always loved how musically unified it made the game feel.
@@steffanyr1038 I mean he explains it a lot in his RU-vid videos. Each course is a legit course - 20+ videos. And there's something like 6 or 7 courses now
@@steffanyr1038 from what I saw it looks like it’s a multi subject course offering, so either it’s one really big video, or there are multiple. Either way I think based on what I’ve seen from a lot of other online music courses, $99 isn’t bad at all, even if it’s just 1 course.
I recommend checking out the musical cues in L4D2 (another Valve game) and how they are used dynamically to indicate which types of Special Infected have spawned, how close they are to players, their status, etc. Every single Special Infected has its own little motif and they are all super recognizable, even when played on top of one another. The devs have talked about it a bit in various places (including in-game commentary). Also, the L4D1 motifs got reused but restyled with new instrumentation & production to suit the new settings of the sequel.
I just recently came across tf2 as I was scrolling through Steam for hours when I was sick and one of the best decisions ever in my life was to start playing it! I absolutely love the game and my favourite theme has to be the medic introduction theme.
Valve has stated that they literally based the TF2 soundtrack (and overall design) on The Incredibles, that you also did a video of. That's why it all ties to spy movies, The Incredibles was emulating that and Team Fortress 2 was emulating The Incredibles. It's, you could say, incredible stuff.
The music in TF2 is somehow chaos, disorder, somehow funny, like the game itself. The music of TF2 has a Jazz style fits really well with its background story
The very first thing I thought when hearing this was: INCREDIBLES Which is a huge compliment as the Soundtrack for INCREDIBLES is probably still My favorite of all time (or at least in the top 5)
1:43 Pretty sure it goes B-B-B-A-A-Bb-B instead of B-B-B-Bb-Bb-B-B. Might be a little different from what I typed but I'm pretty sure it has that A in there because it's played in E minor blues.
Omg yes the episode about TF2, the game that helped me become the band nerd I was in high school, let's gooooo Also, kinda surprised Charles played it a lot too, nice
This is so great, brings back so many memories. I remember I used to play the Engineer's theme on guitar all the time in college when I just wanted to noodle around a bit! I absolutely love the traditional old-west style major into the minor TF2 leitmotif. So sick. Absolutely incredible music in TF2, great video, man!
9:28 Fun fact, theres actually another way that you can "growl" on saxophone that I find easier than humming. If you play while making a gargle sound in the back of your throat (sounds like perry tha platypus or when someone rolls their r's) you can get a really nice growl sound.
It's in my name, it's in my brand. TF2 has been my everything, and boasting a lifeless 8000 hours (and counting) into the game, it's great to see more people take a serious whack at the musical composition of the game. It's catchy, it's punchy, it's both chaos and beautifully orchestrated harmony. If there's more TF2 coming down the pipeline for Charles, I'd ask him to take a look at the more character focused themes. Right Behind You, More Gun, Drums of War, and the (unfortunately) latest addition of Jungle Inferno. All of these deserve their own breakdowns!
Seeing Charles being excited about "Medic!", going full nerdy like "Here's the theme! Here's the theme!!" and laugh like a maniac when the choir drops, somehow makes me happy and envious of him.
I don't know why TF2 has this "season" of popping up almost out of the blue across youtube after it's been quite for some time, but I'm here for it. I still play this game every now and then, I'd say at least once a week. It's one of those games that just "stays" with me. Such great nostalgia to watch people bring it up again.
This video came out at just the right time. I played the piano with some simple stuff for the first time in years with my 10 year old sister and I just played TF2 for the first time for a while just today.
Genuinely never quite understood how this OST was even allowed to be this incredible. I loved hearing you talk about it, I just cannot get tired of this score at all
Considering that the TF2 soundtrack sounds very 1960s spy thriller and mission impossible-esque makes me wish that Carol Kaye wrote some bass lines for TF2. Either way though the music in TF2 is incredible
Ooh, I like that thought. Also with a killer bassline is Steam Gardens which I was thinking must be inspired by both Sultans of Swing and Ron Carter's bassline from Red Clay. The cover by The Consouls is an absolute banger - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ozoytzqNp-s.html
I'm so glad one of you guys covered this. The TF2 soundtrack is unironically great music and I listen to it all the time - wish I could find something that sounds remotely similar. If anyone has any recommendations let me know
in terms of brilliance the few orchestrated tracks in mario galaxy come close but are a very different feel oh and the band Garbage is very different genre wise but they composed at least some of a james bond ost and they have some great progressions in their album 'version 2.0'
I already knew this, but it's so cool to see a big RU-vidr make a video on it, because it's actually really cool the way that you barely even notice it
Wow, what timing for you to make a video about TF2! I played it for the first time in a long while just last night, and it was surprisingly more fun than I thought. Love your videos man!
