Damn man! Great freaking story!! I'm that guy who was raised as kid on "ABC's Wide World of Sports". I'm more into motorsports such as MotoGP, IRL, F1. So you can understand why I had not heard of this guy till you told me this story. Thanks man! Thank you very much!
This. Is. Wonderful!! What a wonderful, painful, infuriating, EMPOWERING video! I am not even gonna BEGIN to try and imagine what "administrative" dumbf*ckery went into Jason's departure. I have loved watching / listening to Jason over the years I'm a child & adolescent psychiatrist and have marveled at his fantastic voice, his linguistic PROWESS and his KNOCK-YOU-DOWN intellect For ME and for all my "not normal" kids of 32 years of practice, someone like Jason is a hero - a beacon that keeps us other "different" folks from wandering off into the bog of "I don't belong" Thank you for this LOVING TRIBUTE to a unique and gifted human being 🙏🏽
speaking as a neutral from NZ I always enjoyed his commentary of White Sox games- I didn't know about his condition but it makes NO difference to me, he is good at what he does- will now enjoy his work with the Tigers next year.
White Sox loss; Detroit Tigers gain. A physical disability does NOT equate to a mental/intellectual disability. Some of the most intelligent or wise people who ever lived had physical disabilities that did not deter them from greatness.
That's the same thing I've been telling people all of these years when I was told I have autism but that didn't stop me I got two jobs and being successful while doing those jobs specifically
I am aretired Elevator Mechanic who has a friend that thinks I'm the smartest person he's ever met . He stutters , builds and flies his own stunt planes and is an Aircraft Crash INVESTIGATOR. The World is weird that way 🤔🫡
My Daughter was born with CP. Don’t know why or how. She now has a Masters Degree in Phyc, working full time and living independently for over 10 years. She gets UNDERESTIMATED ALL THE TIME. She’s Small but Mighty!!!
I had a friend with cp. He fell down a few stairs one day (refused to take the elevator). They forced him into an electric chair. He was doing doughnuts in the parking lot after a rain storm…. Bad Ass! Truly!
Vague allusions to there being some sort of nefarious reason he moved to Detroit, and a stated refusal to go into it, complete with a "Google it". That ain't any kind of journalism, sportsbro. As a westerner, I know nothing of this story, and Google returns some animosity over contract negotiations. The story appears, by highlighting his CP early, to be saying there's an accommodations issue. As a long time Disability Rights Advocate myself, who also happens to work at United Cerebral Palsy, I would actually like to know the part of the story that seemed to be the point of the story, but that ain't what we got. Gee, thanks Rick. /s
We have a saying here; 'Detroit vs Everybody'. We've been a punchline, a punching bag, kicked when we're down, underestimated, mocked mercilessly but we've never given up. Welcome to Detroit Jason. Ernie Harwell is beaming right now.
Jason Deserves so much better . I was there when he took over from Hawk Harleson . Jason is amazing .i’m a White Sox fan but he needed to get away from this trash organization . He’s going to be amazing for the Tigers . I pray Jerry sells the team .
All these years I've been listening to Jason & Stone for White Sox games, and I didn't know he had cerebral palsy. If he ever mentioned it on air, during a broadcast I must of missed it. Even when the camera showed them talking about food, or saying good night I didn't notice.
Tha absolute most brilliant student I have ever taught has CP. Im pretty sure that many people afflicted with CP who are non communicative are far more cognizant than they are given credit for. Always greet them, look them in the eye, and treat them the same way you would as any person you perceive as "normal."
Sad to see Matt Shepard go from the our Tigers broadcast team, but pretty excited to welcome Jason to the town and the culture here. Detroit: We're all broken but hyper productive, proud but misunderstood, maligned but masters of the come back. Welcome to the "D", Jason. You'll fit right in.
I stuck with the Sox this past year BECAUSE of Benneti and Stone. That team was abysmal and hard to watch play. Those two not only made it tolerable, they made it fun. The WS made a mistake in letting Jason get away.
Jason is a MONSTER talent. Possibly a future HOFer. Management is clueless, so clueless. This combo was was sooo entertaining to hear. I’ll always remember how comforting it was to be entertained by Jason and Stoney during that time. Such a shame he was let go.
Does Jerry Reinsdorf hate his fans for begging him to sell the team so he’s punishing them? I’ve never seen this before, he’s like the lady from the movie Major League
Yep. You are exactly right in your comparison. Reinsdorf is a horrible owner of a sports franchise and unfortunately for us Chicagoans he also owns the Bulls in the NBA too.
Steve Stone is gonna be board shitless again without Jason. When they started laughing at a stupid joke, it was contagious. I’ll wear my Jason bucket hat with pride! Best of luck kid, I wish the WS would of paid for you to stay.
I could watch the White Sox lose 150 games with Jason in the booth. Without him, and with the team's outlook in the dump, it's going to be really rough to be a Sox fan for the forseeable future. This was a bigger loss than Tim Anderson or Jose Abreu.
A Gent who is 1000 times more Brave than anyone of us!! Just Proves that some people in our society just think they are Better than anyone Just because they have Money ( 9-10 of them got their Money from their Daddy's ) Shame, Shame... Shame.
The most intelligent man I ever knew had CP . Not only did he have the ambulatory problems he had speech problems. When it came to his mental abilities he was a superstar .
Why was he let go? There is an implication made here, that it is his disability, but not followed up upon. This is wrong to do, as we do not know if there are other factors. If it is because of his disability, then what the White Sox did would have civil and criminal repercussions.
@@galedribble9535 let me help you out.... you see- he wouldn't make a very good player and the Nets are not very good .... see where this is going ...? Good - now try to keep up.
Most of us are underdogs: short, "ugly," overweight, old, not white, "broke,." The problem is that society is ok with class discrimination. So most of us experience that kind of treatment in one way or another.
@@linwoodnymph6113 You wish. I wish. Every victim wishes lol, but like I said, classism is our most cherished prjudice. Even school is designed to make us feel above the other students, and guess what? It's our compulsory institution. We are required to feel better than others. Ha!
People forget about capitalism; it can add you or subtract you. If you play in the field you can run the bases or strike out. Without job protection aka unions you are alone in the outfield.
The powers in Detroit baseball will not make the same mistake the White Sox organization made. He will be welcome for the rest of his career here if he so chooses. He very quickly won over this fan base and it is no surprise. The man found his calling and passion. He is making the best of it.
Rick!! Love the video and although the video’s report is enough to subscribe I LOVE BENNETI since 2020 pandemic Korean games Jason announced with the ESPN crew (Wud up Boog and Perez!). White Sox loss, Tigers’ gain!! This dude is a national treasure and will go down as one of the best broadcasters in history!!! But I’m subscribing your channel for ONE reason: Your wall of album covers. All are my favorite albums but Midnight Marauders was the first CD I ever bought. Outkast, The Roots, Blackstar, and Rage against the Machine. We are brothers from different mothers!! Keep up the good commentary and can’t wait for the next video!!
It’s not explained well in this video, but the White Sox did not offer him a contract worth his value, and there were several members of the management and ownership that treated him disrespectfully.
I know a couple people with cerebral palsy, one is mentally and physically affected, the other is only physically affected. You can be totally functional mentally and have cerebral palsy.
I'm keeping Jason a secret from my coworkers. The feeling of knowing something or someone before everyone knows him is selfish but such a great feeling. Can't wait to hear him instead of Gibson who was born a player and NEVER a broadcaster. You guys in Chicago had many great sports broadcasters. I am biased towards Chet Coppock myself, but that may change!
Agreed, nothingburger content compared to the title. If the standard is going to be that you're guilty of discrimination based on the fact that you fired someone who's a member of a specific group, then the reaction is going to be that employers will be deterred from hiring them in the first place.
An executive of the White Sox said disparaging things about his disability. They treated him with zero respect. This video fails to research and present the fullness of this story. I will miss Jason. He was the best.
What became him was that picture of him at 6/7 y/0 with a microphone already in his hand! To this day I knew the voice, I always said he is one of the best announcers I’ve ever heard, did not know anything more! Now I know the “rest of the story” love the guy!
It seems that as a viewer, I'm supposed to already know the context behind this. But I don't, and the video doesn't explain it, for some reason. Seems like he was unjustly fired, or something? Sure, I can google it, but why should I have to?
touching and interesting story, but does not deliver what title promises. where is the Backfire? is you making this video the "backfire"? You get a comment from me to help your engagement but a thumbs down on the video for inaccurate title.
@@GrunarG I don't understand your reply here. My initial comment was that the story was interesting- but the title was deceptive, as there was no backfire. It is not backfire for the dude to just get a job at another team. A literal backfire is when the gun barrel is jammed or obstructed so the contents of the bullet casing explode the gun, usually pushing parts of the gun and bullet casing backward. Often injuring (sometimes fatally) the person shooting the gun instead of the intended target. for this title to be accurate- the fans would have to revolt, or the boss that did the firing gets fired himself, or the Sox go out of business and stop being a team. Those would be backfires. A guy that was good gets fired and hired somewhere else is just a normal thing that happens. Who are the "jackass inconsiderate people "able body"..." that you are mad at here?
@@GrunarG what utter shit. stop labeling and treating people as able or non. also, why reply like this to that comment? It's clearly clickbait meant for people who want to see backlash against the whitesox, nothing of the sort was spoken of.
touching and interesting story, but does not deliver what title promises, there is a thing with us "impaired" we do not reminders on every aspect of our lives but we ask for help if we need it....But you cannot force us to "simply" ask for it.......
So, with all these people who gave him a chance, does it mean he has handicapped privilege? The answer is no. All he was given was opportunity. We “able bodied” people are also given opportunity. It’s called an education. So, if you claim that you are underprivileged because of any excuse you can muster, like being poor, not having two parents, being a minority, go to school and focus. You have the opportunity, take it, and stop blaming the world for your “misfortune.” Equip yourself with the skills people will pay for. Thomas Sowell.
