This may be the worst possible way to lose a championship title game as the obscure 'dropped third strike' rule decided the outcome of the Section V B1 state baseball championship in New York between Hornell and Pal-Mac. Rick Strom breaks it down. Give us your thoughts in the comments below!

I think the runners were on 1st and 2nd not 2nd and 3rd. Watch the sequence at which they all cross the plate. This added to the confusion of the defensive team because they gave up on throwing to 1st thinking it was unnecessary as 1st was occupied. Obviously this does not apply with 2 outs, as the desperate 2nd baseman makes clear with his pleas “there’s 2 outs!!”. Catcher won’t be sleeping for weeks. All he had to do was toss it to 1st.

Easy play. It happens every single game in little league. I've known this since i started playing baseball. Every player should know that a dropped third strike has to be tagged or thrown out. The catcher even attempts to make the tag.

I coached youth baseball for almost 10 years. I burned it into the heads of my infielders that if there was a dropped third strike with two outs, the catcher and first baseman were to complete the play as normal no matter what the umpire called or where the runners were on the bags. This repetition was designed to guarantee a standard behavior in handling such a play which coincidentally would have totally avoided what happened here. This coach and his players failed to play the game, and took it in the teeth as a result. They have no one to blame but themselves.

Yea I'm surprised that no one is talking about this, not even in the video. This is a ball, touching the ground... the batter does not swing... but after replaying number of times it looks like the ref calls it a strike for some odd reason, and voice it loudly. This is where the batter starts to run and is missed by the catcher. I bet the catcher was completely confused by the fact that he genuinely thought that it could not be a strike since it landed on the ground, didn't saw a swing, so thought, hey the ref called a strike, game is over. He never saw the ref calling the batter safe and no one in his team told him. The ref is at least half responsible for his lack of judgement on the pitch and the very shy half gesture that he didn't repeat like an experienced ref would have been doing if he sees that he was not seen by the players.

Thank you thank you! I thought i was going crazy. Watched it 10 times and couldn't convince myself there was a swing and a miss as the tyt guy says. TYT should delete this video as their commentator is doing them no service. Makes them look bad.

Let me give you the real breakdown There was two strikes on the batter with 2 runners on and 2 outs. There was no swing and miss, just a called strike 3 on what looked like a ball. The catcher drops the pitch and then tries to tag the runner and misses then looks back at the ump who clearly calls the guy safe which means you didn't tag him and he's not out. Then instead of throwing to first to complete the out he goes to celebrate like a dummy. And while jes celebrating with the ball in his glove everyone scores and they lose.😂

Hard to tell because the ump is blocking the angle, but don't forget it's where the ball crosses the plate, not where the catcher catches it.

Correction: The runners were on 1st and 2nd. Doesn't change the outcome but, as this play shows, attention to detail is important. The commentator stated "...indicate runners on second and third, with first base open. This is important". This is not important: because on dropped third strike, the batter becomes a runner if first base is open OR THERE ARE TWO OUTS. I do believe the catcher thought this was important, as it looked like they were going to make a throw to 1st, then motioned to 1st (as if realizing a runner still occupying 1st) then pocketed the ball and went to celebrate.

The rule is to encourage the pitcher to throw a controlled pitch not a crazy breaking ball in the dirt like we saw. It is a last chance for the batter in that specific situation. I like the rule, pitcher want to get cute throw the batter out at first!

@@K2mtp that has nothing to do with the rule. The rule has been around since the earliest days of the game, and it was a way to speed the game up. The need for it pretty much went away with subsequent rule and equipment changes, but it survived and is part of the game today.

Want arrogance. It was a miscommunication on the sign. He thought safe from the ump when he asked meant he got the out. It just sucks. Catchers fault, but it's not arrogance . He thought he made the tag and the ump agreed. Ump meant the runner was still safe ( which is correct )

The dropped third strike rule in baseball is when a hitter strikes out, whether swinging or looking, but the catcher fails to catch the pitch in the air. If the ball hits the ground on a third strike, the hitter is permitted to run to first base.
