"i need you to be a team player" only gets said when management wants you to go above and beyond your job description purely for their benefit and none on your behalf.

"Teams win but you blame somebody if the team lost." Yes. Though I've never worked in the auto industry at all, a basic management philosophy I was taught by one of my first managers is always, "Teams succeed. Managers fail." Team failure, beyond egregious sabatoge by an individual anyway, means either the failure is normal because in the real world no one wins 100% of the time, or management did not create the right circumstances for the team to succeed. Period. This manager also helped me build one of my most important philosophies: "A process that relies on an individual to complete something perfectly isn't a process, it's an aspiration." Processes build in redundancy and failover mechanisms. If your business relies in individual heroics to survive, you shouldn't be in business.

A common problem we face is fleet management. We buy new work trucks that still break while under warranty. The dilemma is do we risk having the truck held hostage at a dealership or repair it ourselves to reduce the time we lose , weeks if not months. Im reminded of the Seinfeld cat rental episode where Jerry makes a reservation but they don’t have a car reserved for him. Same problem, dealership sets an appointment for repair then informs us they’re waiting for parts? Parts were known prior to the appointment shouldn’t that have been a predetermined need to verify availability before making the appointment to repair? Costs us 400-600 a day on average to lose a vehicle indefinitely pending parts arrival. My opinion is they would rather risk customer satisfaction than lose the job to a competitive shop/dealership for short term reasons.

Mike, we had a saying at my shop. Fix the issue not the blame. I was an outboard boat tech at 18 and switched to cars later. 14 yrs Subaru dealer 36 as shop owner. Always told my guys if you get stuck let me help.. That way if we were wrong we BOTH were wrong. I know you really got burnt but I’m telling you that All shop owners and shops are not like yours. We always paid hourly so the tech did not suffer if things that were unexpected or out of his control happened. I learned a long long time ago that there were too many hands involved getting parts to me so I quit promising miracles. I only had two jobs in fifty years. Owning my own shop let me find a peace amongst all the hectic pace we kept. I sure hope you can find that contentment too some day.

As a shop owner myself, I tell customers it gets done whenever it gets done. Once you put a deadline in something, always backfire. When I was a tech, I got the blame for cars not being on time.

@@ferrarimatt1 Retired 8 years now. I don’t miss having those deadlines customers always insisted on. I help a shop fix mowers and golf carts. He knows don’t ask me for one. I just do electrical repairs and it might take him weeks guessing at the problem.

Never understood the team thing on a car repair or any repair shop… when each individual have a different skills / experience (service advisor,parts man ,tech even shop owners).. now days best thing to do is tell customers drop the car off for most repairs…. We know how a simple oil change can turn in a 5 hour job

I had a big fuck up recently at work and have a question now. Basically we get paid on a flex pay system. So my bonus for billed hours is now going to pay the tech that did the work to fix my fuck up for his bonus. Is that legal? Do shops have any legal standing for making employees pay for their own mistakes? My boss doesn't seem to understand it is a flawed system when one employee getting paid for work they did is dependent on another paying for a mistake.

This would be a good question for an employment lawyer in your state. In general you have to have agreed to that kind of thing in writing before they can legally dock your pay.

Remind the boss not to nonsense language. No team player. No, we wear many hats. And it's not a dynamic environment. Tell him to talk normal while making direct eye contact. Any man displaying emotions doesnt need to be listened to. He needs immediate correction to stop the behavior. He needs you. You don't need him. You have the power as an individual to close down any business. Act like it.

Had a coworker that was very much the opposite. Tech won or team failed. It was never his fault. He refused to buy tools. He was a horrible diag. He was 10 years older than me and all the young guys did the diag, except for the one super old crusty.

We work together. We check each other work for per vehicle in our shop. We help each other. Our policy in our shop; is No tech is left behind, No put downs. No tonics in the shop, We all in one, Monthly meetings ask for feedback and assistance.

No reason being on a team. It's the techs fault regardless, so why should I worry about the rest of the "team"? Blame-game is just reality, because anything else requires people to admit they may be in the wrong.
