French demonstrations against President Macron’s plan to raise the retirement age stayed mostly peaceful but clashes broke out in Paris, with police using tear gas and protesters throwing fireworks and other missiles.

no matter how seemingly "minor" the issue may seem to some (62, 64 who cares) the principle here is important. let bite off a finger, lose the whole arm. let it go once, and you slave off until deathbed before you know it. i think this makes it so violent, sheer outrage amidst feasting and exempt few.

They realize it. But they want their pension, so they're willing to sacrifice the other guys. Turns the police into another class of citizen meant to be a barrier between the common folk and the elite. If they fail being that barrier, the elite promise to take their stuff away and leave them at the mercy of those they've beaten.

Of course they realise but they are doing their job. They have constrain the riot. The rioters know that too. Their purpose is to demonstrate (including some rioting) but not to go to the French parliament and force their will. French riot but they they are proud of their republic and they are not attacking it (no matter if some/many happen to hate the current head of state or government). Without the police there might be too much destruction as a riot is not in anyone’s control (but the police’s).

The French--like most of the West and Japan--have three options. 1) Either cut retirement/welfare because there aren't going to be enough young people to tax to pay for it in the future due to birthrates which have been well below replacement levels for 50 years; 2) raise taxes; or 3) bring in millions of "migrants" from countries where people are having children to fill out the base of the population pyramid. no macron was only elected because he was facing the far right and the majority of the French people did not want Marine le Pen to be the next president. They did not agree on his ideas, the pools are showing right now that 70% of the all population is against the retirement at 64. This number raise at More than 90% when you only ask people that are working, so it means only some old people that are enjoying a nice retirement and that constitute the most wealthy age group of the population is rooting for this reform

It's the principle. Because it wont stop at the first increase. The people are tired. How far as humanity came? Is this the future and poor economic state, we worked so hard for? I work with 100's of people and everyone says it seems we live at work. We should be thinking about 4 day work week. For those whose jobs allow it. Especially since most of us are working only to pay for rent.

That’s a certain way not to improve things (or resist bad changes). You can very easily find a another country where matters are always worse. Let’s not improve this and that because in this other country it’s actually worse. You’re right we Europeans need to sacrifice, and we could do it much more, because of the war with Russia but age of retirement in France is not an issue in that regard. If it goes worse there could be temporary laws restricting this and that, for example making retired people to work if absolutely necessary, but the war can’t be used as a reason to make permanent changes.
