i didnt see any voltage regulation on dc input, so it might need exact 9v power supply. any thoughts on input voltage tolerances, like 12v input so i can use slightly more voltage power supply with it?
If you're concerned about getting shocked by this meter I can tell you from owning one that the 1000V test mode produces not much more than a mild tingle. Probably less than 500 uA behind it. :)
Megger is a band name that has become genericised. Whilst the brand name was chosen to have some resemblance to Mega, the SI prefix for a million, what differentiates an insulation tester from a multimeter is not so much the ability to measure megaohms of resistance, but the ability to generate relatively high voltages and measure resistance and insulation breakdown. Whilst it's possible to jury-rig an ordinary multimeter to use that via a high voltage source (current limited for safety), it's extremely inconvenient and, what's worse, the multimeter will be very poor at reporting insulation breakdown which can be highly cyclic. The video misses the very important point that the high voltage isn't just there to generate a high enough current to measure high resistances, it's there because the insulation might not break down at a few volts, but it will at, say, 100V, or 500V. A multimeter with a typical 9V battery might well not drive the voltage high enough to show that insulation breakdown and continue to report a very high resistance (my own modest multimeter goes up to 60 megaohms; however, even if it goes off-scale, that does not mean what I'm testing is properly insulated at, say, 250V).
Hi Mark, You seemed to measure a high positive output voltage from the unit whilst using terminal 'E' as the ground reference and terminal 'L' as the positive high-voltage. Can you comment on the apparent discrepancy between that and the user manual, which says that the user should (counter intuitively) connect terminal 'L' to chassis ground, and then probe the device under test using the lead connected to terminal 'E'. (thereby apparently doing the insulation testing with a high negative voltage) Is this just a mistake in the manual, a translation error, or is it actually correct?
Nicholas Lee, I think you have that backwards. Terminal E I believe is the positive probe. Terminal L is Chassis Ground according to the manual they sent me. No explanation video on this Ground Protection loop using the Ground Terminal. The manual did not explain that very well.
I now own one of these VC60B+ units, and I just measured the voltage between 'E' and 'L' with a Tektronix multi-meter. I can confirm that the manual is definitely printed wrong, as my voltage measurements show that the 'L' terminal is the "Live" one that outputs the high positive voltage, and the 'E' terminal is "Earth".
I had the exact same question. From reading around L and E on insulation meters stand for Line and Earth. The guidance for other meters is that you bung L to the item being tested (such as the cable or motor winding) and E to a suitable ground on the item. The manual seems backwards to me on that basis.
This video is out of sync? else there is voltage applied before you hit the button,, button pres sit starts beeping but your meter is showing 270-290vdc before you push button? @17:29 and I'm glad you ignored the chinglish manual, where they reverse L and E in it, so yeah follow teh device label is correct and manual is wrong.
