We look at the Amazon Echo Dot which is essentially the top portion of the Amazon Echo, but without the speaker underneath it. The electronics changed significantly when Amazon updated the Echo Dot design though the mechanical assembly is largely the same. From the standpoint of its RF electronics, the Echo Dot looks a lot like a $50 smartphone you might buy on Amazon.

The large heatsink is to give weight to the Dot so it does not slid as easy and for consumer appeal so the Dot dosent feel cheap.

The large heat sink is also used for making tasty guacamole

the heatsink could be as much for weight (to keep the dot static) as for heat.

Very interesting design. Such a small speaker, so that's why it doesn't sound as good as the original Echo device. I've been wondering how to make my Echo dots sounds better and was thinking of building a tall "canister" out of PVC pipe and making holes in it to enhance the sound. I would like to add that the woman in the video is an absolute doll.

The large heat sink is probably for the processors, right? They're attached to it via thermal tack, and they're probably the source of most of the heat

Exactly. Is the way to keep cool the chips. Otherwise they will be very hot.

is there a reason for the speaker not to be manually connected other than maybe manufacturing ease

If the echo has a notification it's LEDs can be on for a prolonged period of time. But, I actually think the primary purpose of the heat sink is to give the unit weight.

I consider the "heatsink" to be at best ballast... Look inside a set of Beats headphones, same deal, add weight to make it "feel" more expensive, still just cheap junk at the end of the day.

Why so many microphones?

So it can hear you over any background noise. Works quite well
