Thanks for your very detailed look at this and all of the reality checks. I never thought about Google's tendency to forget to support products, but you're right. As much as I love Google, I have an original Kindle Fire somewhere here that still works and is still supported by Amazon.

Apple has been improving the smartness of the Homepod, and much of what the Dot will do, it will as well. I have 3 of them because of their great sound (esp with 2 paired). That said, having a Dot or 2 around the house is not expensive for the more esoteric things you may want to play with.
