Extra's Adam Weissler talks to Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears, for the release of the album "Everybody Loves a Happy Ending". Beverly Hills, 2004
I could listen to these people all day long. Roland's deep British voice is so relaxing and amazing. Never change Tears for Fears. Never change!!! I had the biggest crush on Curt in the 80's. I didn't get to grow up in that era! I miss the 80's so much!!! Tears for Fears forever!!! I hope I get the chance to meet them some day!!!
....very elegant men. They look as though they have been taking care of themselves. I understand why their fans are bonkers about them. They exhibit a level of musical integrity that seems to be missing/disposable these days. I am abundantly appreciative of the fact that they decided to give it a "go." I am enjoying (greatly) my renewed alignment with their work. Much Thanks for posting this...and thank the universe for "RU-vid."
Curt is even more handsome now than when he was in his 20s, but I always had eyes for Roland. I first fell in love watching the Head Over Heels video 🥰
Remember when in 1989/1990, Curt and Roland could barely look at each other, like being so angry? Now I see some calming peace between those two. They have grown up and they’re not the same young boys from the 80’s. They have made peaces together and now they’re back again as friends, as musicians and partners in crime. Love them ❤️🇲🇽
Terry Porter I am OBSESSED with the sound of his voice!! He can hit so many notes, it's amazing :D He has great lips too, but you wouldn't be able to see that on audio books. darn lol
Tina Jane Oxnam. He was soooo hot in the 80s, early 90s. Like adorable and sexy at the same time. I still have a crush on him, even at his current age he is attractive to me.
They are so talented, I just can't stop saying that cause it's true… Great musicians, it's glad to see them together… And of course they're gorgeous inside and outside… Love them both!
It's interesting to see two people that wouldn't choose to work with each other decide to make it work. If they can work together creatively, then there is no excuse for war. Good job, gentlemen.
Those guys are crazy for thinking they were unattractive in their early videos. They were and still are absolutely gorgeous. Curt has those perfect angelic facial features and Roland has those dreamy eyes and sexy lips.💜So much for Curt's video predictions ...now runs to ,watch The Tipping Point...😀
I LOVE the way they started to get comfortable during the interview as appose to the tension in the beginning. Curt started leaning over more and more.. he was the first to look at Roland. He made Roland laugh when he said you didn't age after Roland joked about looking exactly the same 22:25. It was cool to see this. LOVE Tears for Fears and watched their 2016 and 2017 Live Concerts. The chemistry between the two of them was there. Their BOND is stronger than ever! They have so much Fun on stage together.
Great interview! Curt & Roland are both incredibly talented. This album is a masterpiece! They are both so down to earth and such a delight to hear them speak. Roland is so adorable; I had the biggest crush on him. So intelligent and charming!
I fell in love with them when I was in college: blown away by Shout. Saw them in San Diego in July and Los Angeles in Sept 2017. Both concerts were spectacular. Their voices and petfeomances are amazing!
I could listen to them talk about their past, records, memories, music, companies they worked with, performances and families forever!! They're just so inspiring!! I love them as people and I love their music so much!! ♫♫❤❤
never mind the personalities,or how things were or how things are now, never mind age,or how old you look, its the music that's important and if you enjoy making it,enjoy listening.
Chris rainbow its not just the music I am glad they are friends again its sad when the business rips friends apart the reason they are so successful together is they have chemistry the songs are great but its also that they are actually friends they are not just hired musicians put together they did it
It's such a shame Roland in the younger years was not comfortable as a celeb. But when their band was formed they made massive hits that people loved. If I was Roland I would look back by watching a Tears for Fears song like Everybody wants to rule to the world and just see how lucky he was back then.
These dudes had a solid place in my college years. Their music was made for a specific time period - a certain euro-pop-synch-complexity. Lyrically they were a notch above other group - hard to maintain though. Good job lads!
you kidding right? Multi platinum and gold albums throught the eighties..many worldwide hits.. and you think they are underrated? They are one of the biggest and most respected groups from England.
Most of the great music of the 80's was dismissed as fake mainly because of MTV. TFF was the best of the 80's. The Seeds Of Love is a masterpiece from start to end, even the songs left off the original LP are great. Happy Ending is great too. I just wish they would get some new stuff to us, we need it in 2020. I understand that there have been some illness and personal tragedy hindering them, so when it happens it will happen and it will be great I am sure.
Tears for Fears will always be at the top of the mountain for me. They've gotten the through a 38 year long fight with a brain tumor and other medical problems that have resulted from it and I am thankfulful for their musical influence on my life even though I have to give God his fair share!!!
Funny how they didn't enjoy their most successful part of their careers. Now their families are their treasures. I hope they have happy lives. They gave us joy in the 80s.
Everybody’s a critic, should be the name of this record. Some 80s artists love to hate on themselves, when they were amazingly instrumental in inspiring the best in music from that time forward. The fact that videos were made mainstream in the 80s make people cringe. I hate my pics from that time too, and now kids are looking at you and taking fashion from your look from that time. Appreciate yourselves. You made music when people used their limbic systems much more drastically. You made your audience feel something not by just your music but videos and shows. Your are the beginning of the end of what it means to be truly human. You sit in a priceless space.
Good interview. Loved "The groupies are older", lol. Doing interviews for the press must be the worst part of the whole process. You hear the same questions over and over and over again.
Roland and Curt are so honest and cool. They both show, Curt rather reluctantly, how discomfiting to be a public artist in these Times. The interviewers eventually were pretty good in their own right but I wish they'd probed a bit more about why it is that Orzabal and Smith have been so consistently decent and Humanistic in their choices, their craft and lyrical content. For example, when the artists said repeatedly that certain tracks were especially "hard" for them to make, I mean, "hard" how? Why hard? Did they mean technically hard? Artistically? Emotionally? Roland at one point states that they worked not to repeat themselves. That alone must be a very hard goal to achieve, and achieve it of course they did do. Brilliantly. It makes me very happy to see those two instinctive gents settle into middle age. They don't seem to construe how elegantly each of them has pulled off that feat. We all benefit from that, obviously. Just wanted to say so. It's due them. Their last album really was pristine and very affecting also. I like that they both state that we may or may not have heard the last from them, that it's just up them. That's as it should be, surely. Personally I'd be so proud to have done any possible fraction of what they have done, jointly and severally. The interviewers should have recognized this a mite more as a golden opportunity to stare Art in the face and to enquire how artmaking actually happens. Instead they took about ten questions just to put Roland and Curt at relative ease, when this effect could have been achieved immediately, with a single discerning question. Pick the question. It doesn't much matter which one, so long as it's not hack.
October of 1985 (when I was in third grade), I bought the "Songs From The Big Chair" Album and I have been heavily influenced by this Band ever since. I saw them in San Francisco, CALIFORNIA in 2004 and they were AWESOME!!! TFF= Pure Genius.
+Daniel Marquis i left a comment on the 1986 brit awards. You should read it. Both loved them around the same time, and seen them around the same time :)
Daniel Marquis I was a freshman in high school in October 1985. I have always loved Tears For Fears from the beginning. One of the best bands ever. Songs From The Big Chair one of the best albums ever. Total geniuses musically and lyrically.
These guys are the real deal they are amazing artists and they do set great examples as artists to they are real and genuine to pure I love them dearly I want always tears for fears to live on there the best band out there.
Que Hermosoooos Curt Smith y Roland Orzabal en la entrevista. Son tan simpaticos y tan expresivos . I love you Tears For Fears . Se lo merecen todo .💋💋💋💋🌻🌻🌻🌻🌏🐬🐬🐬TFF
It's tragic these two couldn't of gotten along better. Their first album was my first album/cassette. I have so much debt in music selection and these guys are such a big reason. They were way before their time and their sound is endless. Roy orbizal is an amazing vocalist is a Major reason why I sing today. And for that I'm greatful.....
I think that last comment re: Curt not being able to sing is unfair. He certainly could sing when they were making albums in the 80s and whilst his voice was never anywhere near as powerful as Roland’s, he had an interesting, melancholic voice that added a lot to TFF songs. Especially when singing with Roland, their voices mesh incredibly well. These days he has lost the power he did have and as singers get older their voices do age with them and they tend to have more “bad” vocal days than they used to, especially when they’re touring. I’ve heard some sketchy performances from him and I’ve heard some great ones. I would say the same of Roland, there’s occasions where his vocals have been sketchy and almost cringeworthy, but that’s just what happens when you’ve used your voice to make your living for so long. It starts to degrade. I certainly don’t think Roland is underrated in fact I see more criticism of Curt and admiration of Roland within the TFF fandom than anything else. The same may not be true outside the fandom but I would argue the same is true of any band. It is usually the frontman who will get the praise and attention whilst the other band members, some of whom may have contributed a great deal to the writing of songs, are largely ignored. Whilst I don’t think there is anyone here that would disagree that Roland is the songwriter, driving force, and the better singer, he clearly missed his partner in crime (saying in previous interviews Curt is his muse and he always wrote for him and his voice, even when they weren’t talking) They have an incredible musical chemistry that works for them both and they feel working together brings about something special, otherwise why would they continue to record music and tour when it is clear that their relationship is still complicated and something that they have to work hard to maintain. Pitting one against the other is pointless when they have decided they want to be together and no-one (not even Curt) would disagree that Roland has the superior talent.
your music all around is truly great... the new stuff and the old stuff.... in the eighties you both looked great.... and you still look great... and of course sound great... thanks for the music guys.
This is a good interview, it's great to see how time can changes our outlooks, we mature, and what once seemed so important just isn't anymore. Progress :)
I don’t understand why they didn’t like the way they looked in the early years. They were both adorable. Believe me, I like pics of me 15 years ago WAY better than pics of me today (yes, my profile pic is current, lol).
@@candysweet434 At the time when Roland was young he called himself ugly...only inretrospect did he see he was so cute and even better looking in the 1990s!! I was 10nwhen The Hurting came out I remember with SFTBC Roland saying they were the ugly Wham...never a Wham fan loved TFF from first listen is 1983
Interesting interview and I really like a lot of their songs from the past. Shame the way people fall out in the music industry but that's the way it goes I guess. I reckon they should just shout, shout and let it all out, they really are things they can do without. Come on, I'm talking to them. Come on. Sure it's a mad world.
if Roland had just come clean and say "hey, I took the spotlight and creative lead after a while and you got left on the side and eventually dropped Curt. I let my ego get in the way and i'm sorry".
Exactly. If you listen to Curt's solo stuff, it's extremely good and he's a strong creative engine, which hasn't always been recognised - he should have been allowed to contribute more. Looks like the record company tried to push Curt out and for a time Roland went with it. Yes Roland has a deep booming voice and good sardonic lyrics, a massive talent, but it is mistaken and too simplistic to say 'Roland is the musical genius'.
I think Ro was a bit jealous of Curt because Curt was the voice of all the hits, but i think Ro was the main man and wrote most of those hits, so he felt put out by Curt being the 'star' and him not so much. So he did Elemental to prove that he was the main man, and it worked, it's such a brilliant album, but he was very abusive lyrically to Curt on that album, so i agree he should have just apologised about that. He had proved his point, but it has caused upset between them both which still carries on even today. Roland is the real talent in TFF, but Curt is the voice, and they need to realise that but also recognise that it is part of what makes them unique.
Very underrated and unfortunately grouped with 80s music as if they had no musical talent whatsoever. But in fact, they have tons of musical talent. Plus they seem very genuine.
What are you talking about. 80's music was when everyone had musical talent. The 80's were a great time to enjoy music. I mostly grew up in the 90's and I'm 33 now, but I love 80's music. The 80's and 90's had some great musical talent and Tears for Fears was one of the best and still is. I was jamming to them in my car on the way home from work today.
The more I listen to Curt's interviews, the more I see him as a person with a big ego. Roland seems to be more delicate, I have the impression that he gives more of himself in this relationship, shows more affection (even at concerts). He was the one who spoke to Curt first, I have a feeling he just missed him. Curt always seems to be more cold and distant.
I agree with you. From my understanding Curt left TFF after the Seeds of Love tour because Roland gelled musically with Oleta Adams more so than Curt...so upset that he had a smaller role in the group during that time...plus per Curt's own admission he was not around much during the making of the album. He seems to actually be the more temperamental one... before the Tipping point he was going to leave TFF again. Actually Curt faxed Roland asking him to call him...Roland was apprehensive about it due to the way Curt just left him high and dry. Curt's daughter didn't think Curt did anything but go to the gym while her mom went to work. I am guessing this prompted him to want to do something meaningful again something his girls could see and be proud of lol but Im just guessing about that based on his interviews I've seen and read
They talk down about there past records that made them. i still think there great now. They cheer me up. I understand there emotions are now differant and feel they have the need to go forwood with that, But the old stuff where hits. Doesent mean there new music will be. I also like videos so i can watch them over again. But they dont. Keep singing the hits lads. There is a need for good music.
Love the comment about the 40 year old groupies being sexy. I got my kiss on the cheek at about 40, myself. Still besotted with Roland, and the music never stops affecting me ❤❤
The most interesting era of TFF in my opinion. You can tell it was a bit of a growing pains/awkward phase for the band to mature into their late era. Great album though, great songs, and glad they made one more big album statement.
