Tears for Fears Playing in a Empty Mall

This is my semi abandoned mall in my hometown, it stays open because of the large older community in the area of Brevard County FL. Merritt Square Mall is located in Merritt Island and it is a 1985 mall, you can kind of tell that from it never being remodeled. This picture is one I took. It has an original 1980's Sbarro Pizza still in use, and this Macys exterior is a Miami Vice white with neon Macy's Signs, all of the building is lined with tall palms emitting a strong aesthetic of Vaporwave.

It is sad to think the 80's and 90's are gone FOREVER. It will never be a thing, only some towns might be still old school but not many... Sad to see time go by with technology.

It's ruined honestly, as someone born in '02 it felt like someone pushed the big red nuclear button in 2012 and we just slept through it and all went to hell. Nobody I know in my area, let alone even from my own Gen Z, wants to live these days. Too hard, too damn expensive, everyone's politically angry and everyone's blaming one race or another and there's not even an inkling of happiness unless you just forget who you are and become ignorant. You can't escape it. Most of us just smoke our lungs out until we get cancer to cope.

@@redline1916 Welcome to late stage capitalism young fella. When there are no new lands to conquer and no new proles to exploit, they had to turn to cannibalism in the imperial core. That, and speculative finance scams. Lots of those. It's only gonna get worse before it gets worse. You think things are bad now? Wait until the oil runs dry and we go back to donkeys and wood-powered steam engines. At least you won't have to worry about owning a jacket or something~ Always look on the bright side of life.

This is like something out of a future movie. I can imagine the entire human race gone and yet the music and malls will go on as if nothing ever happened. The aliens will land and wander thru the malls looking for humans only to find none, but bobbing their heads to the beat of the music. They will look at each other, shrug their shoulders, get back on their spaceships and leave. But the mall music will go on. Excellent job.

The nostalgia of hearing 70-90's hit songs, my dad always played them and it's just so- beautiful, I can't imagine how he listened to them, on a cassette, a vinil, etc. Although the society of those years may not be the best, It's still a beautiful era, so beautiful colors, it was just. . .a bit better, I'm not close to being from those eras, but my parents were from the 60's, so I can imagine them going to those vintage dinners, thanks for this, It's just. .. so nostalgic

Come back out and there is still time to eat at a nearby restaurant in the mall. Then we rush to the bus station and head home hoping to do this again next Saturday. Nowadays, we all shop online. Hopefully these malls stay alive for generations to come…

I am confident I did not express that at the time, but I have a lot of happy memories thinking back at it. Makes me miss my dad even more. Can anyone reading this please put in the effort now to stop everything you are doing and tell him you love him? Cause there is a time coming, faster than you might think, that you will never be able to do that ever again.

@@ionlyplayps5530 Right, the internet makes people lazy "I only play ps5". Personally I wouldn't want to go back, in the 80s women were expected to be housemaids in most working class families. Yeah no thanks, I want to work. Not to mention the (more) rampent homophobia, racism and general unacceptance of anybody remotely "different" to the "norm". Yes, theres issues in the world right now, millions without homes due to wars, but tell me a time period there hasn't been wars? it was no better in the 80s. On the bright side, (in my country) anybody is free to marry, free to work, lots of support is available to those who cant and there's a greater understanding of mental health conditions so people can get the help they need. I don't care about "old vibes" and "nostalgia" when life is a lot safer for the vulnerable today.

Having grown up in the 90's this really hits me with so many different emotions and nostalgia, but also makes me sad for time gone by that I can never revisit. The world was so different back then and I have countless great memories of growing up through the whole decade. The saddest part is that it makes me remember so many good times with family members that have since passed away. The 90s was so vibrant, it was a time to be alive for sure, these days it feels I'm just happy to exist and have a roof over my head. It felt like a better time to be alive back then, or maybe I'm looking at it through rose tinted glasses.

I bought this as a 12” vinyl single when it came out at a Sound Warehouse right outside of Baybrook Mall near Houston. The mall is still very active (weird I know) but the Sound Warehouse is long gone. Kinda cool that you picked this song for a mall as it truly was on heavy rotation playing on MTV and on the radio very frequently everywhere in the mid 80’s. Actually Sheldon on Big Bang theory also mentions Baybrook mall as he said he visited Santa there on one episode. Forgot which episode it was though.

I miss the malls - a great large indoor space to take small children when the weather was bad. Always a fountain to throw pennies in to make a wish and room for them to run around. One of the malls I took my small kids to had a center area with low, carpeted stairs that all the kids loved running up and down on and sometimes they would lay down and roll down them, laughing, then get up, run up the stairs and roll back down. Sad that malls have all but disappeared....

I like music way before my time and more modern bands, singers, like Grizzly Bear and St Vincent. Tears for Fears are excellent, and I'd recommend Blancmange, Talking Heads, Yazoo, Erasure, John Foxx, and, Thomas Dolby for some more 80s quirky greatness.
