Unity gain can be a challenge with distortion because of the extra harmonics and compression factor. I was once so worried about my fuzzy tone (for the "Dance to the Music" solo) blowing out the sound guy that my fuzz level was much quieter than my clean level. The solution would have been to compare dirty to clean during soundcheck... but that was my oversight.

I like running just a tad above unity. I can do that sense I do my own sound and recordings.
