My XXL was bought way back in '96 (I think!). It's serial # 96779. I've always loved it but sadly have had few occasions to really let it rip. However, here it is in all its distorted glory with a Strat behind it.
Further recording details can be read at the end of the clip.
This clip was inspired by my RU-vid buddy 'ciclosonico' who indirectly reminded me that I should do this clip. Check out his excellent take on the XXL at • Tech21 XXL - original

Just dug mine out from the cupboard and Really enjoying it on my board. Mine is 91880. Haven't been using it for years since playing 'quieter', smaller venues. Thanks Burgs love your work.......

Loved this demo! I just bought a Vox Night Train 50 head...and the XXL matched up with both channels in the Vox is absolutely amazing. I have gone through many heads...but this pedal has been my best friend since '97. I have been in blues bands and currently in a metal band...this little guy gives me all I need. I love the crunch and dynamics I can get with the volume on my guitar...just love it! Nice demo and playing, too!

Matt Gilbert * The stock speakers that came in mine are bad ass ! so full and Bassy with crisp clear high and perfect mid range ! That's a bad ass amp ! Too bad mine only works at home and never at any gig 😣

I got one of these for high school graduation in 1995 and has been my go to OD since. No matter what amp I play througb its a beast. Need to get the level pot fixed as it cuts out until about 11-12 o'clock.

Wow, I do recognize the XXL! (it's the pedal I use for saturation & crunch). Thanks for demoing it. It's ridiculously dynamic, even when there's a shitload of gain. It also sounds way more natural than any OD I've tried (for me they all seem to reduce the frequency range, like you're losing something when you stomp). I would recommend setting the tone very low tho. But you have to love that sag and juicyness; when you pick heavily, it almost sounds like your speaker's being torn away.

A lot of ppl I talk to that have these have an issue with the level potentiometer cutting out on them from 6-12- past 12 o'clock it's fine. Since I always have my drive turned up past 12 o'clock- I'm going to go ahead and buy one. Got one lined up for 70 bucks- not too bad imo- if it works.

I have been using the XXL in my arsenal since the mid 90's. Still today, I think it has the most realistic tube amp tone of any analogue pedal . Sadly, it has began the issue of shutting off on me mid use. Anyone else had that problem?

There's something fuzzy about the decay though; the saturated part eventually drowns in some kind of inelegant fizz... Have you noticed that? It doesn't decay naturally, that bugs me a lot on mine.

Thanks for the clip. It sounds better with your setup. I've had this pedal for 6 or 7 years and still can't get more than one sound out of it... Maybe it's my tube amp or something, but the warp knob changes absolutely nothing to the sound and drive is kind of flat and dry.

@2002jdp I used to have 2 Tech 21 XXL's with a 70's Ibanez Tube Screamer and original PT9 Phaser plugged into a 100W Seymour Duncan Convertible. If I needed extra juice I'd stick a Boss OD1 pedal in the front of the chain. XXL was by far the best pedal out of the lot, you'd get some nice out-of-phase tones from tweaking the warp controls to different positions. Sold all the FX for $500 about 7 years ago when I went acoustic. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

Hey Brett sounds cool! I have one of these I bought in the nineties also serial #94116. I played with it this week for the first time in a few years and really had fun with it! Only thing is the level knob cuts out pretty bad until about 11:00 oclock. Is there a way to fix it or the pot? Thanks, Great vids as always!
