I filed down a cheap screwdriver to remove the micro philips screw (one) on the dial side plate on the 7S26A. I bought quite a few sets,of screwdrivers in the search for one that would work.... they didn't lol so I made my own which worked fine. I'm just a hobbyist so the 7S26a and other like movements are fine and cheap to play with. The most complex Seiko I've worked on (I think) was a 5606 and by complex I mean it had too many pingers (springs that go jump) but I've done a few swiss ones, my favourite being a 1966 Omega Constellation which was beautiful to work on. I enjoyed this video, nice to hear an Aussie voice for a change. ⌚👍🇦🇺
@hal0eight

Geday Jeni, The 56 is pretty nice but get what you mean on the pingers. Best way to stop that is to bog a side down with rodico when you remove and install. Yeah I did have a 0.6mm flat head with the sides filed down for years. Works really well actually. How nice are those Omega 500 series movements? Work of art.

Thank you for this video! I am about to service my GS calibre 9S56. The movement is almost identical to the 8L35 movement. Except the dial side because of the GMT-function. I still have to make this specific 3-prong tool to properly remove the rotor. Some time ago I visited a watchmaker shop in Tokyo, Japan, and it was very interesting to see all the Seiko-tools they offered in their store. Except that little 3-prong rotor tool, of course! Upon asking the shopkeeper for that specific tool, I just got a typical Japanese gesture for 'no, I don't have that' as an answer.

Fabrication of tools is a core skill in the BHI training. It's a PITA that companies do this, another culprit is Hamilton who , since about 2019 have a proprietary rotor removal tool that they don't sell. If the watch industry continues with this trend, its likely that legislation will be introduced as what happened with OBD2 on cars 25 years ago. The EU (used to) take a very dim view of this practice and started to fine car companies. Of course, the argument made by Seiko would be that JDM are exactly that. It made me flip my Hamiltons and I am reconsidering purchasing the MM300 I had my eye on. I'll now be looking at a Grand Seiko with a 9F

@hal0eight
@hal0eight 2 года назад
It looks a lot nicer but the the value proposition is still the same. Finish wise, it's still not comparable to the last generation OMEGA movements, and you're buying last century's technology, in that it still isn't a free spring balance, and you have poor serviceability. So for the much higher price, the key improvements are a nicer finish and a MEMS escape wheel. As the OMEGA and 8L based watches have a similar price point, TCO and service availability issues, which one will you buy? That's my whole point here, the 8L series is totally overpriced, even the new version.

Wouldn't say so, the good value for money is 4R series of movements because they are rock solid, reliable, easy to service, can last multiple lifetimes, can be regulated to within 5 spd and you can get those movements in 200-500 EUR watches from Seiko and even lower if you look at the microbrands. Even 6R isn't a great value for money because its almost identical to 4R but watches with 6R cost 1000+ and for no valid reason lol. So when it comes to Seiko, its either low to mid-tier with 4R or a straight jump to GS if you can afford it, all that stuff in between is bad value for money.

What do I, as an ordinary person, NOT get if I take that movement. That's a real question. It would help me a lot because in my life, I have to spend my entire salary to buy that watch. I want to buy a solid automatic, but even though I don't have a Rolex, I'd rather wear a battery-operated watch than buy a bad automatic. I'm a little scared of the word "crap" from the man who disassembles the 8L35 and tells us that there is nothing so special that it could not be serviced outside of Japan. Thank you! Can you recommend me some watch under 2000$? I would buy Longines Hydroconquest but it is a bit expensive for me. Not easy thing to do.

Geday, there's nothing inherently wrong with the 6R series movements. They sell millions every year. My argument is that it's poor value for money. You get all the performance of the 4R36, in watches half the price, at a premium. I don't think the extended power reserve is worth the additional price for the 6R series movement. The design of the movement is not new, it goes back to the 7006/7019 series from 1970. It's a solid design. They fixed the major wear issues with the 7S26C and 4R36. In that the pawl wheel is properly supported in jewel bearings now, and they added a jewel bearing to the lower barrel arbor pivot. As for which watch to buy, can't help you really. @@AirlinersHD Sounds good. If you look at the specs vs the 4R35/6, it's the same except power reserve, that's my only concern. it's 70hrs for the 6R vs, about 36 for the 4R. I think they've tightened up the QC on the regulation now, I certainly hear less people talking about poor regulation. It will do great as a watch for you and has a screw down crown = nearly bulletproof. SEIKO do not currently make any really bad "malaise era" (to use a car analogy) movements, as of right now (2023).

So the 8L35 is not really a 9s derivative? Everyone make it look like the 8L is a superb movement
@hal0eight
@hal0eight 3 года назад
No, the 9S is a derivative of the 8L. It's an OK movement. Well designed in a good size package but it's nothing mythical. Would be nice if SEIKO supplied parts for it to normal repairers. The 9S has a reverser wheel instead of the pawl wheel for winding, which is probably a good decision here.
@inkhaurt5812
@inkhaurt5812 3 года назад
It has the same architecture I think. Though, the 9SA5 is more involved when it comes to finishing with things like cleanliness of parts, rhodium plating, Tokyo stripes, perlage, and the 6 position adjustment with temperature variation.

@@inkhaurt5812 8l35a is undecorated 9s55. 9s65 has reverser gear auto wind system rather than seiko magic lever. 8l35b is like the previous 9s55 with skeletonised pallet fork and escarpment wheel which can only be found in 9s65.

They're probably really insistent on getting it to service centers because it's more or less a GS movement eithout decor. Still doesn't make sense why they won't let independants do it though
@hal0eight
@hal0eight 2 года назад
It's pretty simple. They want to control your watch from cradle to grave. Say you have the thing for 15 years, they see that as 2 services they are going to get out of you, which means they probably made another $1000 off you simply by restricting parts. They're learning from Rolex, who seem to have the mindset that you only ever lease a watch from them.

There are far better options with eta2892-a2 based movements. Or get a watch with chronometer grade conventional movement like sw200-1 or sw300 instead of overpriced Seiko SLA. Availability of parts is a major problem, that's why i stick with Swiss movements when it comes to service. I'll take 25 years old Breitling Superocean over brand new Seiko SLA.

I always read presumptions that 8L35 is an undecorated Grand Seiko movement. By seeing this video I can't think but that it is a pretty basic and very rough movement. Nothing special about it.

So this movement is what the Seiko Marine Master 300 has? Is it nothing special ? Typical? “Pretty boring “? Nothing special?? I thought this was made in house at Grand Seiko? Some of the reviews I read said that it’s basically an undecorated Grand Seiko movement. 🤔🧐🤔🧐
@hal0eight
@hal0eight Год назад
Yes, MM300 movement. It is nothing special, a bog standard movement comparable to a ETA 2892 or similar. The 9S series is the variant made at the "watch studio", but they are not comparable to the 8L because the 8L is not a chronometer movement. It doesn't have the additional balancing and thermocompensation work the 9S series does. The performance grade is significantly different. My other criticisms in that SEIKO do not supply any parts for what is a fairly straightforward 3 hand movement are valid as well, and make it a poor value for money purchase because you are locked into sending it to Japan every 5 years for service. That sucks.

@hal0eight
@hal0eight 2 года назад
Definitely. I'm of the opinion there's a nexus between finish and price. With the current SEIKO price rises I think these fall below in that nexus, which is whay I'm of the opinion they are overpriced for what they are, in comparison, to say, a Elabore ETA 2824, which you can actually get parts for.
@Sef211

"Nothing special" it's that all?
@hal0eight
@hal0eight 2 года назад
Yep. A movement that is priced in the mid range that competes with Elabore ETA 2824's you can actually get parts for, that routinely sell for half the prices that watches with this movement now sell for. Overpriced for what is a nice, but unfinished movement that can't be fixed locally and needs to be sent for Japan for repair. Ultimately, poor value for money.

I feel you. Being able to take apart and fix a watch doesn’t mean he is an expert. I worked for Val Fleurier, the movement manufacturers for Richmond group in the team which design JLC calibres. The best movement makers nowadays are Seiko, Rolex and Patek, ETA are also very good. With this 8L movement all components are hardened and have extremely long lifespan and high wear resistance, this is something a mere watchmaker probably doesn’t know about, as the movement design engineer I know about this
