Tech TUElk IV: Replace Jeep Rear Wheel Bearing in the Bush!

In this episode of Tech TUElk I show the viewer how to change a rear wheel bearing on the trail with simple everyday tools. When a Jeep JK is loaded to GVM they are very susceptible to rear wheel bearing failure. Even if yours has not failed yet, you should prepare by understanding the procedure and having the parts and tools available.
I hope this video helps you!

Fantastic video. Better than most auto shop videos on changing the rear bearings. Keep up the good work!

Note to bearing re-installers... use the old bearing collar (now split open) as a driver to push the new collar into place, and 2 hammers is better than a hammer and a punch..... 2 hammers, one each side, blamming down on opposite sides of the old bearing collar, driving the new collar home.

@@theunlimitedexpedition9418 well it was helpful anyway. I was in my garage, but it was still way faster than trying to use a bearing puller 🤣

I’m about to do the rear passenger bearing. I like the drum brake slide hammer trick. I can hear the movement in the bearing at slower speeds ( getting worst now). I found movement up and down in the bearing with the wheel off. Bearing kit ordered. What brand of bearings you guys used. I ended up with a Repco brand. We see how it lasts. In my previous four wheel drive I used Timken one side and Koyo bearings on the other. Both were fine.

5/28/23: 1:50 pm USA. Hi just curious if this would be the same procedure when doing on a 93' Jeep Grand Cherokee but with rear drum brakes, Spicer 35 axle, ABS sensor.

How did you realize that you should change the bearing at that right time ? I mean, I am somehow in the bush but I need to run more about 500km with that bearing sound. What bad thing can happen ?
@theunlimitedexpedition9418
@theunlimitedexpedition9418 Год назад
Usually the first indication is a leaking seal. If there is no noise you should get 1000km or even more before the bearing collapses. If there is a noise, failure is imminent probably within the next few hundred ks. If it fails and you continue to drive, it will most likely destroy the axle shaft, brake rotor and possibly the axle housing itself. Once the bearing seat on the axle housing is chewed out, its new axle time for you.
