The best example would be larger industrial robots. Here the three-phase synchronous motor together with a sensor system and a controller form a closed loop control.
You know we need DC exciter system specially for synchronous motor so meaning wherever you see there is commutator and brushes you can assume it's synchronous motor. Where as in asynchronous motor (commonly used squirrel cage) will definitely not have brushes or commutator rings meaning rotor is free from external connection. And that's how you can guess it's Induction motor.
