Techno Break modulating Minilogue XD / When one LFO is not enough? / What about MIDI modulation?

Do you think 1 LFO is enough for a synth? I certainly do not think so. Hence I was experimenting my Minilogue XD modulation options. Apparently there are a few workarounds. In this video I go over one of them - MIDI Modulation. I am happy with the result!

🌍 Hello World! My name is Ihor.
This is my channel where I share my experiences, ideas, reviews and tutorials related to Electronic Music Production. I focused mostly on Techno and House music. Thank you, Will! It comes out that these CC stuff is extremely useful. ✌️ I was working on the synth stab for another techno project the other day. And I needed some slowly evolving modulation. As usual I thought "filter cutoff" it is and an internal LFO. But then I modulated filter envelope intensity... result is so dope!

Woa!!! I came to see how the Xd fare in order to stealth some secrets for my prologue and I left with tricks for Octa and Digitakt for free. For me the one issue in the XD is the sequencer lenght, it's like a dwarf packed inside a giant. But otherwise I have not regretted a day after I bought one.

I did buy the Beats drum oscillator for £20 to get the Mini XD going but am also running Maschine 2 as. a drum machine, Natural Instruments, which has a great selection of drum kits & samples

This video, and especially that Bassline video you did were really informative for me getting my first little jams together.

Really nice video and well explained! I’m going to try this with ableton. The cv inputs are another LFO option. I’ve been using the CV Mod app from my iPad. No need for anything modular and the total cost plus patch cables is really inexpensive

Thank you Stephen! With Ableton it must be quite a capable thing! There is this MIDI LFO thing should be quite a cool tool for that! Curious how it flies! CV Input is also great. I connected it a few times to my modular and got some really great stuff going. But man, I had no idea that there is such a thing as CV Mod app. So handy I guess!

It’s important to note that the user waves can have additional lfos and sources and an lfo can be programmed via the motion seq tracks.

There is also 2 CV inputs in the back to Modulate anything from an outside source as well... Not sure if anyone mentioned that in previous comments...

Yes! You can either use these inputs to modulate stuff, or make them pitch and gate. There are some quite nice applications to that!

I’m a bit confused… why do you need the trigger for the lfo? Can you still modulate with parameter locks or is it a hardware issue? I only ask because I have a nearly identical setup and am trying to explore a bit more with it.

Hey @Ihor ! Is there any reason why you didn't modulate the Minilogue with the Octatrack instead? I'm not an expert but is there a reason I'm missing as to why you chose the digitakt for the modulations? Great channel btw!

Hey Kyan! Good question. There is no particular reason I chose DT over OT. Maybe it is a little bit simpler on DT. OT has even more opportunities with 3 LFOs, LFO designer and arpeggiator tho. Thanks for your kind words and the question. ✌️

Hey, nice work! Is that possible to use the Minilogue XD keyboard itself to record midi into Digitakt, which will play it back to Minilogue XD? Wondering if I can avoid buying yet another midi keyboard for doing this.

Hey! Thanks for watching! I've never tried what you asked, but I thing it should be possible. If you go MIDI out from the Minilogue it will send the MIDI notes out into the DT and they can be easily recorded. Then back from DT out into Minilogue MIDI in. The only doubt I have is that it might create some MIDI feedback loop. It's a matter of trying.

I have done this. I accept midi from Minilogue XD on, say, Midi Channel 9 and send from digitakt to Minilogue XD to Channel 10

Wait, is it possible to send midi information from the minilogue xd to ableton for example? Like I record a midi sequence in Ableton, but then use the knobs on my minilogue xd to change stuff like cutoff or resonance when I play the sequence back? Basically motion recording but then in Ableton instead of on the minilogue xd's limited 16 step sequencer. This should be possible, right?

Yes, I think this is possible. Check the MIDI CC implementation of the Minilogue in its user manual.

@@IhorMedia Found it, but, for some reason it doesn't work 100%. For example when sending VCO level the minilogue xd sends 2 different CC messages and Ableton automatically picks the wrong one and pot pickup doesn't seem too smooth.

By the way, is it possible to get from you some advices about settings, connections of those devices? I am having problems with synchronization of digitakt and minilogue

Sure! This is the setup to have Digitakt as the main clock. Minilogue: - Cable into MIDI In - Edit Mode -> Global Edit -> Global 4: --> MIDI Route -> USB+MIDI --> MIDI Ch -> any number and make sure to set the channel number on DT the same --> Clock Source -> Auto (MIDI) --> En Rx Transport -> On Digitakt: - Cable into MIDI Out - Settings -> MIDI Config -> Sync -> enable both CLOCK SEND and TRANSPORT SEND - Any MIDI Track -> SRC page -> Enable channel by [Func + press CHAN knob] and select channel number the same you set on Minilogue I think that's it. Hope this helps!

this is amazing! I have an issue with my minilogue XD and my new Drumbrute Impact. I connected a midi cable from Drumbrute Midi Out to the Minilogue XD Midi In, but I can't play anything on the minilogue, I have no idea why

Hey Emmanuel! Thanks for kicking in! ✌️ Well, I don't know what the issue either. But you can try to check if everything is set for it. Check if Minilogue MIDI Channel and Drumbrute MIDI Channel are the same number. Check if Minilogue is set to receive MIDI. Check if Drumbrute is set to send MIDI. Stuff like that! I often run in such situations and the I figure out that I forgot to set some setting 😊 or channels are different.
