I randomly got this as a recommended video, and I didn't feel the 10 minutes pass. It's really inspiring to see someone dedicated to studying / working and using normal / cheap tools to do the job. I've seen too many programmers on RU-vid talk about how productive they are on $2000+ tools and how great their expensive laptop is and other similar things. The simplicity in the tools that you use is inspiring.
I don't know. I'm a teenager who has done programming for a few years, and the workloads that I do from time to time justify my 2 setups. I have a main pc build with a Ryzen 9 5950x and a RTX 3070 ti and then a MBP with the new m1 chip (not m1 max or pro just regular one). I use my laptop for school and portable coding and like making websites and stuff which doesn't require too much CPU/GPU usage or anything. I also make games on it from time to time, but sometimes I need multiple vms running, or servers or I need to render a big model or scene or make a graphically intensive game. I worked for both my mbp and my computer by owning a small business when I was 14 selling computer software. I do get distracted a lot but im looking into maybe doing the productivity and entertainment user stuff as holy shit, based on how productive I was before I got these devices to even work for them, it has all went down.
@@heathbar8015 how did my comment spark so much anger out of you? You could have used that anger to better yourself but you ended up using it to insult some random person on the internet.
@@blocksource4192 apologies, that was a joke made in poor taste on my part based on you selling software at 14. I obviously don't know you. Just ignore me!
I don't know much about digital minimalism but you're a computer engineer to-be and it's ok to have two laptops, especially since there are different os and customizations. As long as you're using them to help you live better, don't feel bad about having more than 1 or two devices.
@@adamski1 Yes that's right. And it depends on the person and their needs. Maybe someone needs to work on one OS at a time. Then, this is a great thing to do.
"Digital minimalism" is retarded. It's genuinly dumb. If I need multiple devices then I'll use multiple devices. I work, I wont sacrafice efficiency for "minimalism"
You generally need two devices at least incase one breaks. You can't afford to wait for a couple of days until your main computer is repaired. I own a W541 for basic development and I'm planning on getting an X280/T480 for when I need something with more than two hours of battery or don't want to carry around the huge workstation.
This guy is the perfect example that you always don't need expensive and high-end stuff to study, do work, etc. Edit: Thanks for 887 likes❤️ I never knew I would get so many likes😭
Anneong james!!!!yo plz upload more RU-vid videos.....like focusing more on ur social life ...nd also ur 3:30 am video blew up so congrats!!! dont get sad by those ppl saying that its not a good routine cuz we your followers are getting inspired by you nd you are doing a great job....im also trying my best to wake up early cuz otherwise most of my time is wasted doing nth....DEEP WORK was a great book nd i picked up some good things from it...so thanks a lot gambate!! fighting!!
@@atlas4647 are you talking about when he showed he was using arch? Arch is just a distribution of linux, you can think of it as a "flavor" of linux. The command he used is called neofetch, and its just a small little program that shows a logo of your operating system (the arch logo, or the apple logo in the case of his hackintosh) and other info about his pc (cpu and stuff) in a pretty manner.
I find it impressive on how u use old tech to avoid distractions, I do have a newer iPhone 11 but I do use my older iPhone 5 to listen to music and it only has music apps so it reduces distractions
i also own and use one of those older Ipods and the battery life is a beast. Like I used one for 15 hours straight (long bus drive) and the battery life was still at 90%.
I love that table, laptops, all those items. For me, they are about focus and study. I hope we continue like this and at the end of the year I will be a computer engineering student me too. for the next stream letttssss goowww!
@@AyseHan-nq5yp I'm highly interested in Bilkent rn. If you don't have any problem with Ankara it has the best engineering departments in Turkey. I'm pretty sure that you can though. I wish best of luck for you :))
This showed up on my feed and i've never watched this channel before. So refreshing to see people not trying to flex their latest expensive as hell setup, most of which are massively overpowered anyway.
I think it's great that you can get into the world of computers even with little money. Back then, I had to work hard for my first computer and it cost almost as much as a used small car. But it was never a choice between a car or a computer, the computer won the race without having to think about it. I like your space, it immediately makes me want to tinker and set up the next micro NAS or little k8 cluster. Sometimes I long back for that spirit of optimism and everything is possible time.
I’ve always had so many questions abt the tech you use, so thanks for this video! Digital Minimalism changed how i use tech too, and your setup made me reevaluate my own setup
That monitor though. I kinda of wish I had a non wide monitor kicking around. I like the katakana and hiragana too! Trust me though a Mac is worth every penny I don’t regret it at all. The fact it’s Unix based makes it more similar to Linux than Windows. And the trackpad is just heaven in my opinion because I hate external mice on laptops. I’ve spent less on Mac than I ever did on other hardware. I was always buying new laptops but my Mac has lasted me almost 4 years. It seems more expensive upfront but I save over the long term because I don’t need to keep upgrading the Mac like I did other hardware. Or buying new desktop components adds up very fast. Its easy to not realize how much a new video card, ram, storage adds up to money wise. Not being able to upgrade my Mac has been freeing in a minimalism sense because I’m not constantly wasting time looking at new hardware or spending the money buying said upgrades.
Macs are trash just like every laptop nowadays. -no thick magnesium or aluminium chassis -non-repairable (planned obsolescence) -bad keyboard with no travel that feels like prodding metal -runs bloated bsd/xnu -spyware in cpu just like any newer laptop 4 years is not much to be proud of when a lot of 10 year old enterprise laptops still work well (at least for my workflow) on bsd. Touchpads are mostly superfluous, pointing devices should not be a necessity on unix. /rant off
I think this goes to show though, just how little you really need for programming and development. Plenty of engineers I know use old lenovo's. You don't need a macbook pro 16 inch with 5 thousand gigabytes of ram and 2 million gb of storage to run netbeans. Not to mention only very specific applications within comp sci / software eng field actually need graphics.
Technically an old laptop with a RAM and SSD upgrade (you DO NOT want to run modern windows with 4gb and an HDD!) is all you really need.. On the apple side 2013 macs even already have 8gb and fast SSDs so you don't even need to upgrade them! Unless you have a specific workload that need a fancy machine, you need nothing more..
Old iphones are pretty solid if you replace the battery (battery life is still miserable so you'll need a powerbank) On the android side you want either something flagship less than 4 years old (still enjoying my S8, only now starting to annoy me with pathetic battery life and occasional lag), or less than 2 years for budget phones. Wired earphones are perfectly fine, I never use my wireless ones unless I'm doing sports actually because I hate having to keep them charged and the sound quality of my wired earphones is pretty good (things like QKZ VK4 is killer for only 10 bucks, and the apple 9$ dongle if you have a new iPhone is pretty good somehow).. You can really save up a ton if you know what you are willing to sacrifice
I like the way he used to study all day. He has a schedule planned for each and every day. He is smart enough and he doesn't flex as much as the other Ytbers.
That’s pretty cool to see your study setup. You really got a nice work environment, and while it’s a lot, it’s pretty efficient. Again, I really enjoy your study setup that you got going on. Also, Mika just sitting there was cute lol
I really dig it, I love the thinkpads. I have a new thinkpad, 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11800H @ 2.30GHz 1 TB storage. It's a 16 inch workstation, 3-4 ish pounds. Not heavy but not light. Gonna use it for school (A&M this fall engineering whoop!), and I have a singular monitor I can use with it if I wanted (lenovo q24). I like it, having one laptop for all of school, one monitor that I can use occasionally, and one basic keboard/ mouse. I think anything more like dual monitors, although nice and I have a dual monitor setup at work (where I intern for a Power company as a co-op electrical engineering student) are overkill for just students although some would argue they get better productivity. At work I need two monitors to have emails and multiple spreadsheets/ databases open while I use PSSE software to model power systems, but one at home is excellent. It's so tempting to look at more monitors and stuff, but I'm lucky enough to have one really work-focused nice laptop for it all.
You know what? Your video suddenly appears in my RU-vid recommendation and I don't know who you are, but hey I like your cat, and also the video of course. I expect more interesting things from you.
I have never used a TI in college. Used it in high school to draw THICC cardioids for fun. Never had actual use for it. Could've used the money now to get 4-5 months worth of ramen. But no regrets. The THICC cardioids were worth it.
I can't tell if you are into retro tech, or just like to budget, or older tech is better for digital minimalism. There are many ways to get around distractions on a modern device. Still wondering why your using a CRT monitor in 2021 lol.
when your cat is on your front left, i thought i have a cat on my front left too. it's crazy that i always want to pet my non existent cat on my front left
I had the MBP 16 and ended up making a t440p from scratch. I'm using 3 ssds raided together, an aftermarket ips screen, and the firmware is the last thinkpad firmware that is easily moddable. It can also barely handle 4k60 which is kinda nice sometimes. I also just graduated with CPE -> (doin mechatronics shit mostly), CS, PHYS, and MATH, and the most complicated calculations that I do should run on something with a processor from 8 years ago with like 8 to 16 gigs of ram. Just rent GPU servers for training or larger simulations and you are set.
I find that using a laptop that isn't your own helps. You keep it minimalistic as you have to give it back eventually. So I find that I only install what is needed.
I don't understand how people are able to study this long, I get high grades with studying at uni but nowhere fucking near as this much, insane discipline
Most productive man around the world. I'm pretty sure, he dips his balls into the sulfuring acid to get productivity like this. Just insane, how focusd he is. Respect !!!
I remember myself on college, i use Java, Linux, MySQL, Apache as my stack,, Dell as my computer with 35gb ram,, classical music like bethoveen on spotify, wearing anti rad glass, it really makes me nerd when i use the cli since most often thats how our prof expect us to use,, but suddenly, working as a professional at a big company,, i realize my productivity is more important.. so i became more mature when choosing the right tools for the right job,, also i have coffee at my desk
he is using what he has, he is using what is available at his disposable to get a task accomplished without spending more money buying more stuff resulting in more technology and technology that is not being utilized. you've inspired me friendo.
I find curious and funny how popular are Thinkpads and GNU/Linux among young people nowadays, in contrast with darker ages (and of course, using Arch btw).
Respect for that ThiccPad. I'm using L512 with upgraded RAM to 8Gb, 120Gb SSD and i3 370m. (run Ubuntu LTS, Xubuntu, Mint Cinamon and sometimes Windows 10 on it).
can someone plasee tell me the name of the arch desktop environment he is using on his tp x61 (we can see it on the bottom of the laptop's screen at 1:28) ? i need to know
