I just started entertaining the idea of getting a more basic phone. I love my phone, but i love it too much. RU-vid and reddit are the banes of my productivity and growth, even though i initially used them both for productivity and growth. I realize i need to set limits on what I allow as entertainment, so I downloaded apps related to things Ive always wanted to learn, or things that exercise my mind. Duolingo (Surprisingly great- Ive had it a week and I dislike myself for not trying it sooner), Mr Wolf (learn chess), grasshopper (learn coding), MapMyWalk, Coursera, 2048, and YouNeedABudget & Mint (budgeting apps).
@@teancoffee208 You are lost in the world of information and apps. Apps like Duolingo or grasshopper won't get you far in learning languages or how to code. They might have fun interface but it will only get you that far. It's way more convenient using your computer to work and your phone to call / text people.
I first got an iPhone a couple of years ago. Before that I only had two cheap smartphones I got second hand from family (android and windows phone RIP). I finally decided to get one after inconveniently having to carry around three different devices (especially on trips): a shitty smartphone for messaging and maps, an iPad for other apps and internet browsing, and a point-and-shoot camera. In the current state of the world I mostly use my phone for banking, books, language learning apps, music and podcasts. Haven't got a single social media app. I didn't have a data plan until recently so when I was still active on social media I was rarely on them outside of my house.
i have Nokia 3(1gb 16gb) from 2017 also i have disabled every distracting app also you tube and its very minimal phone with great camera like Nokia lumina
Perfect timing. School ministry in my country (Singapore) made it compulsory to buy ipads for learning so it makes sense for me to go minimal. I hate social media and never want to use it again. I love photography but ill just buy a dslr for that.
I remember using Nokia 6680 and Nokia Asha 303 throughout my college years, while everyone of my classmates uses android and ios phones.. Glad that I'm not the only one who used minimal phones in college 🙂
@@dsadsadsa9269, I never had a blackberry phone before (but I really wanted to though; and it was really popular back then) how was that phone today, is it still working? 🙂
@@heymrdaydreamer I accidently dropped it in water, but it's still a great phone. If you use the blackberry passport, it's really hard to use instagram, and it's impossible to use snapchat. The only downside was the GPS, since I lived in a large city.
@@heymrdaydreamer i had a blackberry curve 8520 i think, it was crap, i dont know why people would buy it, the buttons stopped working for no reason(the scroll one too, and that made the phone unusable for me), the ones around the phone started peeling off, i dont know, it felt like a really cheap phone that wouldnt last more than 6 months
I got the iPhonse SE back in 2017, and when I decided to get a new one because 16Gb was too limited, I got another SE with 32Gb for 50 euros (59 USD). Still using it as my main phone and definetly not going to switch until it gets obsolete for my daily use, the best phone I ever had
4G on these basic phones is going to be an absolute necessity when all the major US carriers all start turning off 3G in 2022. I’m just dying for a good basic phone with a full QWERTY keyboard
you can always buy a blackberry key and erase most of the things on it tho the store will probably always stay so if you can resist downloading things to distract you that is a possibility
I just registered for college, going for computer science. Stumbled across your channel and I respect the minimalism. I’m kinda the opposite rn when it comes to tech but really liking this content.
Not at all interested in a minimalist phone, but still found this video enjoyable. A note of how great you are at making entertaining and educational content.
all you need for detox is just go offline. That's the brutal truth. You can have the newest smartphone with all best features, but if you turn off the internet then it becomes a minimalist phone straight away.
For the xiaomi one I think the reason text messages got delay cuz of the sim in states not compatible , I got the xiaomi smartphone one and have the same problem. Unlucky no fix for that I believe. Also there’s minimal theme on android phone which u can try if u don’t want to buy one
I used Nokia 6230 for one year and samsung S3 mini about one year too. I liked and still liking living like this. Without social media i'm more happy and giving all my energy to my life and my loved ones. Except Spotify youtube and whatsapp i don't use social media. And now i want a phone can go long without charging and have whatsapp. Btw i really liked the video please make more like this keep up the good work love uuu :)
U can also get a really old iPhone, like a 3GS. With that you basically also limit yourself to phoning, texting and music listening but it still supports iMessage
I have always debated on going minimal but I need connections and such for my major but I have thought about either getting the 2020 SE instead of my 11 of the mini because since they are both a smaller form factor, my brain would prefer to use something else instead of my phone
I used an iPhone 3G for hella years. after a hundred drops i think it's antenna damaged and sadly now it barely gets signal. Now I use a Nokia lumia as a dumbphone and I recommend it if u can find it cuz it's pretty snappy and also has a personalizeble interface which is pretty cool. Also the timer is a little different than my other phones, liked it too.
to anyone trying to find a minimalistic designed phone yet want to be included in this world ..just get a iPhone 12 mini..and for android users just get a pixel 5a .. been using both they're perfect
I use an iPhone SE exactly like that one, rose gold 32 GB. Bought refurbished , 2 years warranty, like new for €100. Only flaw: battery won´t last much and it doesn't make it that minimal. But I bought a second one silver, 128 GB and I use it as an iPhone.
wow i have not thinking about taking minimal mobile before even that i am intersted in minilasin :) ty for the video i will try this in the future inshallah
for minimal phones, i recomend just buying a used/refurb, the samsing S10 for example, is just over $100 and can have different launchers. and you get a headphone jack. i bought a pixel 3 used for $45 and it has android 12 and a reasonable camera despite being from 2018
I’ve watched your gen z using a dumb phone, and it’s exactly how I thought of how we use technology, and it’s NOT okay. There’s days where I completely put it away for the whole day, only checking my notifications, and I feel great not constantly checking what’s happening on social medias. My mental health has become better over these last 5 years since I was addicted on my smartphone when I was 14. I’m 19 and would it be a good idea to get a flip phone for school/work? I don’t know which one to get…
Does Nokia have maps on it? I want a very basic phone but really need maps and for my family to be able to track my phone (makes me feel safer that way)
Still rocking the SE since 2017 it’s formfactor is soo good and it feels new all the time the battery is a bit bad but apart from that it’s fine the Xr is my secondary one tho
I still use my iphone 6S i got in 2016 and it still feels bout good as new to me! You made me feel like a peasant saying the iphone 7 is a minimalist phone lmaoo. I refuse to get a new iphone cause I dont wanna give up the headphone jack but my apps are starting to become unusable because the ios I'm running is too old :( anyway, cool to see your collection of minimalist phones.
I just use Lumia Windows Phones as daily driver, currently a 950XL (+/- 30€). Great screen, camera, navigation, rudimentary web browsing, good hot spot, and I can Telegram firends (as Whatsapp no longer works). I can easily do 3 days with a battery, unless I make tons of photos, which beat the 14Pro Max.
James how did you get started w minimalist phones and decided you needed them compared to smart ones? ESP in college where we email profs and speak w classmates for projects
This is top-tier content! For those intrigued by this subject, I suggest a book that mirrors this. "A Life Unplugged: Reclaiming Reality in a Digital Age" by Theodore Blaze
I had Nokia Express music in middle school and used it for years. It would still have been alive if dad hadn't drowned it 🤣. Then I had Prestigio - it died (cant charge anymore, fixed it twice - no use). Then mama bought me Lenovo, and when i got a job i bought a used Xiaomi (but it was decent) and I gave my Lenovo to dad then he gave it to my niece (she broke it into pieces urgh..). I sold my last phone Xiaomi 4a to my sister's husband, he already broke it (I hate when people break my phones even though i sold it to them). Now I use Xiaomi note 8 - purchased this one on AliExpress for ~150$. I want to buy in the future some recent iPhone by that time or Samsung.
