That is NOT why vcr's went out of style ... they went out of style because technology got advanced and dvd's took over with higher resolution and better technology with less moving parts.

Looks like you have a Mode Encoder Switch problem the contacts becomes oxidized and needs to clean and that should fix the problem it's located under the chassis or on the circuit board depending on make and model.
