There's actually an interview clip on yt where Hannah pointed that out, and Brett said it's is absolutely not something Roy would do, but Hannah said something like "But Brett is a huge musical fan and it is something he did.'
@@Wizardofgosz No, no. Hannah said it was Brett that was doing it because it's not something Roy would do, but Brett said that it's Uncle Roy doing it, absolutely.
Roy is actually soft and sentimental on the inside, and Ted and Keeley (and Phoebe, obv.) have been responsible for getting him in touch with that side of himself. It might have just been a fluke when they filmed it that Brett was singing along, but it's actually quite a beautiful detail, and I'm glad they left it in.
@@eltedioso given how intricately and deliberately Jason wrote and planned that scene (I say that because I know he and Hannah disagreed for a while about which song she would sing) there's no way Roy lip syncing is just Brett doing it and Jason leaving it in. Other things in other scenes, yeah, there's plenty of ad libbing, but not that scene.
Fun fact about Roy Kent. The actor who plays him was actually only on the writing team. But they heard him reading what he thought Kent should sound like, and gave him the part.
he knew they weren’t thinking about him for the role whatsoever because he’s soft spoken and loves the muppets but he thought he could play Roy. so he made a tape after the writing was done and sent them an email saying if it wasn’t good they could pretend like it never happened but the rest is history.
And the Dani Rojas character was originally supposed to be the self absorbed superstar talented douche character but Dunster was thought to be perfect so they created Jamie Tartt and turned Fernandez into the chipper character instead.
I adore the very small references in this show. For example, when Ted throws the dart that wins the duel, he says "barbeque sauce" to himself. A few episodes earlier he said barbeque sauce reminds him of home and his father. Saying it makes him remember those times with his dad and them playing darts back then, which kicks up his skill. Amazing stuff.
@@theadamcoleman not that I know of and I’m from Kansas City (BBQ capitol of the world) and so is Jason I think it’s just a slight nod to where he’s from (IRL). Fun fact: my mom knows his mom lol
He (Ted Lasso) tweeted about that: "Whether you're winning or losing, keep a positive mindset and remember that darts gotta come from the heart. If you're about to take a winning shot, think of something that makes you smile. Mine is good ole barbecue sauce. #ThrowDartsTuesday"
When Jaime opens that note on the bus in the final episode I always get a little teary eyed. Way earlier in the season, when Ted gave Sam one of the army men for his birthday, and explained that it was from his son, you notice Jaime is listening in the background, and makes a dickish comment. That means he knows what those army men represent to Ted. When he see's Ted's note and the army man, he knows Ted is letting him know that even if his real father gave him shit for it, his "soccer Dad" is proud of him.
Nat's immediate suspicion of any new characters who appear is amusing. I think, in a lot of other shows, Sassy would be a toxic character who's there to upset things. But here she's a healing presence for Rebecca and, perhaps, for Ted too.
@@frontdoor3417 I think she's annoying and maybe even a bad friend. I've had a lot of friends like her, and they can be really fun to be around, but they can also just bulldoze through a night. One could argue that she knew what Rebecca needed for the weekend, so she asserted herself, but one could also argue that she's pushy and overly presumptive. Either way, being around people like Sassy, you don't really get a choice in what happens, because they take the reins completely. Also the way she threw herself at Ted -- well, consenting adults of course, and she didn't know about his divorce, but didn't she notice that he left the nightclub in a panic and disappeared? Furthermore, she's supposed to be a therapist, but she basically explains to Rebecca that it was HER fault that Rupert emotionally abused her? That seems really unprofessional and just wrong. I could go on, and I think I know what the writers were attempting with her, but I think, for me, they missed the mark.
He describes it in an interview with Drew Barrymore. He really did start bleeding quite a bit, but they glued the wound shut so he could be there when they filmed Hannah's parts. Talk about dedication.
The first season hit me hard when I watched it. The irony of Jamie being responsible for the relegation by doing what he refused to learn most of the season has a bittersweet taste
@@Onthebrink5 Clearly haven’t read one that you did. “Books” are an ever expanding concept nowadays. We probably inhabit different sides of this cosmos
@@Onthebrink5Man, I just wrote a response to one of your comments, and the very next thing I see is this hateful nonsense, and now I feel silly for feeding the troll. Why are you even in this comment section?
Doubtful. A person that seeks validation and attention from strangers on RU-vid comments might not be a truthful person. They might say whatever gets them likes and attention.
@@mr.stuffdoer8483 I did not write an original comment for attention and validation. The op wrote a comment for attention and validation. I only responded to them. ONE PERSON. While they were seeking attention blatantly. It is almost as if some of you just need an echo chamber to pat each other on the back. You obviously do not understand attention seeking behavior.
My wife and I have started calling shows like this "kind" shows. It doesn't matter if there's comedy or drama elements it's more if there's a feeling of positive intent from all the characters or not. Schitt's Creek was in this category for us too but Ted Lasso is an epic example of kindness. Can't wait to see your thoughts on season 2!!!
And for those of you not alive in 1980, the "Do you believe in miracles" quote comes from the winter olympics when the US beat the Russians in hockey, which previous to that was unheard of. This was before pros were allowed to play, and one of the ABC announcers said that phrase right before the game ended. And it got used in the movie about that event, which was why Beard said BOTH when asked if it was from a movie or real life.
this show is one of the best I've seen in my 61 yrs on this Earth. It's up there with MASH for my favorite "dramedy". any show that can make you laugh and cry and feel the way this one does deserves accolades. I think I've cried at almost every appearance of those little green soldiers.
That's interesting. I loved season 1 but absolutely HATED season 2. It got woke, it spends a strange amount of time talking about colonization of Nigeria, the comedic timing was gone, there were huge swathes of time without Ted and the psychologist became a more important character than Ted. To me it"s a one season show.
@@davepasnthru no offense but that is a horrible take. Second season spoke about a lot of topics currently going on like anxiety and over things. The comedy was next level and one of the best seasons of a show I’ve ever seen
@@davepasnthru Not only do I feel its NOT a “woke” season…. Who cares if it was. You treat it like a dirty word. Just because people want to you to care about a cause, doesn’t make it bad. It’s a strange impulse. To your point on the Nigerian story line as evidence…. What? It’s just a message about responsible representation and morals over money. I agree, I like the first season better… but to say there’s so little value that you choose to ignore the second season, is a bit much. But hey, you do you. We all have our opinions. I look forwards to season 3.
The sad and breaking moments for Ted are so much more impactful because of his personality and who he is. To see him crack with real life issues makes you feel for him even more because he genuinely cares. Such a well-written show.
"You used to run like your were angry at the grass." The speech from Nate is such good writing not only does it feel like a good moment to see Nathan lead and Ted mentor it adds context to his character that will become more vivid in season 2. One of the writers for this (Bill Lawrence) also did the TV show Scrubs which also has good Dramedy moments, it's a sitcom so it leaned more towards silly but there were a handful of episodes that made you cry. The dichotomy of emotions much like in Ted Lasso made for a great show.
I'm saddened by the lack of Trent Crimm, the Independent in your review. j/k So many scenes just stand out in this show. The darts scene is just amazing and heart-lifting. Rebecca's apology to Ted is touching. I have to admit, I'm such a fan of yours Nat, that when I saw you had a reaction video for this show, I went out and watched it for the first time before watching your review.
I love Roy and keeley’s relationship. They are the perfect embodiment of the trope or prickly dark cloud and ball of sunshine and rainbows who also both have a little of the others energy inside them. I can’t wait for the season 2 reactions!
I absolutely love this show, I was worried you might have dropped it since it's been a while since your last upload. I really hope you watch the whole thing, including (the currently unreleased) season 3. The only thing that brings me more joy than watching Ted Lasso is watching Nat watch Ted Lasso.
You were worried that a stranger on youtube stopped watching a show that you like? Lets be real. You were worried that they didn't like the show and stopped watching. You were not worried about their health or well being. You wanted an influencer to validate your TV show choices. If a TV show gives you more joy than the real world then a reaction channel is terrible for your mental health.
@@Onthebrink5 That's a lot of assumptions you just made about a stranger on the internet for a rather innocuous comment that boils down to "I hope this person continues their reaction series because I enjoy watching them" I think you need to examine your own mental health my friend, a comment like the one I left certainly shouldn't be getting you that worked up.
@@Metal-Spark You are the one assuming that I am "worked up." meaning that your vocabulary is so bad that you went with the term "worked up." I didn't write a comment seeking attention from strangers that was you. Christ my dude get off of the internet. Reaction channels have ruined your brain. Every single original comment on RU-vid should worry the people that love them. Reaction channels take advantage of the mentally unwell. You could Google it but for some reason I highly doubt that you will research the validation seeking problem on social media.
Ted Lasso is known for its pop culture Easter eggs. Rupert is the name of a character Antony Head has played twice. Here in Ted Lasso and most iconically in Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Rupert Giles.
Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent, is also a writer on the show. He is definitely a lot of people's favorite. :D So glad many of these actors won Emmys for the first season. It's a show we need right now, with all the hate and frustration floating around in the real world, I hope the kindness portrayed can inspire some of us to be better.
I know it's a bold statement, but this may be the best written and acted show ever made. I've never felt what I felt while watching this. Going back 50 years.
HAHAHAHAH If this show had no popularity and the masses said that the show sucked then you would be talking about how much the show sucked. I wonder if this show has mass appeal. Bold statement that tons of people have already said.
@@Onthebrink5 how the fuck do you know what I would and wouldn't think? I don't base my opinions on what other people think, like this generation does. If I watched this show and no one else ever did, it would still be my favorite. Be better.
I love that it takes until episode 7 before that constant fear of being let down, disappears. Every great thing that happens, Nat says, "Oh no, I hope this doesn't happen..." expecting this to be like every other show teasing us with JOY. Ep7, it starts to stick that this show isn't teasing us with joy... Joy is the payoff.
Ted Lasso brings everybody joy. The show is so great. Happy for the cast too. Nobody really looked at the little show when Apple launched it and now they are the crown jewel/awards sweetheart.
This show is literally a highlight for me. It’s funny, heartwarming, everything you could want from a show. It’s not “too much” of anything in my opinion.
As you pointed out, I love that the characters are so honest with each other and they don’t really keep secrets (at least not that many). The honesty leads to new kinds of drama we don’t get to see that often since the usual go-to form of drama is secrecy.
But really, in the real world, most grown adults would be honest with each other if they care about each other. That's why I think this feels so much more genuine, and NOT just written to perpetuate the misery.
I absolutely LOVE that we have amazing female characters on this show that are strong, venerable, supportive of each other, that have imperfections but grow from them. And none of them is the "shrew".
"It's like these last few episodes keep shifting between a drama and a comedy." Welcome to TV created/produced by Bill Lawrence. Scrubs, Spin City, Cougar Town, even the cartoon series Clone High -- they all do this brilliantly.
Scrubs is my favorite comedy of all time precisely because of the great mix of humor and heart. Ted Lasso is shaping up to be a real contender for 2nd place.
The joy of Bill Lawrence tv shows, one minute you're laughing and smiling, the next minute you're crying and being bashed with the feels. He has a magical touch with emotional rollercoasters.
Ted is the kind of man every man should aspire to be. So many people would see him and call him weak because he isn’t the kind of person who gets in your face and attacks anyone who disagrees with him, but man what strength it takes to do act and behave as he does. His little monologue at the end of the darts scene was so on point, and so meaningful. I know it’s a character in a tv show, but man I wish more people, including myself, were more like Ted; just a ray of light to literally everyone he interacts with.
The thing I loved the most is how they handled Rebecca's situation. Because in other shows person would apologize to another character, but the consequences of her revealing what she did would be handled in the next season, they would create a drama over it. But not here. Ted simply says 'I forgive you'. And in how many shows you actually hear that words?
The reason he says "Barbeque Sauce" in the Dart game goes back to the first episode where he tells Rebecca that certain flavors and smells can trigger memories and gives BBQ sauce to her as an example. In that moment he was bringing the memory of him playing Darts with his father so he could relax and make the throw.
@@spiderfishx He's from the south. No self respecting Southerner would reference that BBQ sauce. (And I know it's the one he gets, but it's from his son and locals don't bottle their own)
@@Ozai75 - It doesn't matter if he's from the South. He likes making little clever references. Bullseye is one of the top selling brands of BBQ sauce, nationally, and he was shooting for a bullseye. Sometimes you should just apply Occam's Razor. And you're seriously suggesting that Ted Lasso would prioritize some sort of stupid Southern pretentiousness over valuing something his own son gives him? GTFO. You explanation was a reach, to start with, and your attempts do defend it are grasping.
Ted and Keeley forgive Rebecca quickly because this characters are written like functioning adults with empathy rather than idiot teenagers just for drama shake like in most shows, which is one of the things I love the most about this show. It's not only that Ted is going through the same thing Rebecca is going through, it's that they had the time to know "the real Rebecca" and aren't going to judge her for a mistake she made when she was in a dark place mentally. By the time Keely learns the truth she has already become friends with Rebecca, who has been constantly supporting her (during the fundraiser episode when she told Keely Jaime had another +1 and when she hired her to be the team's PR), so she knows she's not bad or wants to harm her anymore (not to mention, she has learned through her conversation with Sassy how good she was before Rupert), and Ted has also gotten to know the real Rebecca, during their morning conversations (who are longer every day), when she came out of the karaoke bar to help him with his panic attack and later during the pub scene, when he learned how much of an asshole Rupert is and how much his presence affects Rebecca. They know she's going through some shit and that what she did may have been wrong but of course they're not going to hold her accountable because as empathetic adults they understand she's not an evil person.
I watched your first two Ted Lasso reactions before checking out the series to see if I'd like it. Just finished the third and final season, DEVASTATED that it's over, so I'm going to binge all your reactions in a row. Your last name may be Gold, but you're a real gem, Natalie. Thank you for doing what you do
I really enjoy having a good emotional cry with you on my lunch breaks watching you watch something I’ve watched before and reliving the best moments in condensed form. It’s very cathartic. Stay Golden. Thank you
I love Ted Lasso, for all the reasons that you have highlighted. In particular, having played football (at a VERY amateur level) I recognise all those characters from reality. They very much nailed the community and family feel of a football team. They also do a decent job with the actual football. It is incredibly hard to 'pretend' to play football and do it to script, but they managed to largely get away with it. (it doesn't stand up to much scrutiny, but to a casual eye, it looks fine).
You watched this show like I did. Constantly expecting something bad since that's how TV usually goes, but every single time the characters spin it positively and I'm just happily surprised over and over.
Ted Lasso is like if Paddington Bear was a football coach. It's basically the same concept, someone who is kinda naïve but very well meaning and brightens up the lives of people around him. I love both Paddington and Ted !
The guy who plays Rupert can sing too. It’s really weird to see him as an a-hole. He was such a supportive character on “Buffy”. Oh, and Billy Joel was my first concert too. Ha ha.
The stadium that they used for the filming is my team's, Crystal Palace in south-east London. We also wear red and blue (so that helped with the visuals). As a nice little thank-you from the writers we get two shout-outs, one at the start of the season, and one at the very end. :)
Art imitating Life? AFC Richmond relegated and Crystal Palace? Fun Fact: In 1967, just the odd 56 years ago, we all rolled down the hill that was The Whitehorse Lane End before it became a 2 Tier Standing End(away supporters, usually) and then went on to be the End it currently is. The mass rolling was to celebrate the winning goal on our 2/1 win@ Palace:)
every single episode, Ted Lasso gets into a way that we don't communicate properly all the time in our day to day lives, and it shows us how to be better to each other. it uplifts me so much. I really love this show. it has a special place in my heart even though I can't stand football
A friend kept bugging me about the show when season 1 had just finished, I'm ever so glad i watched it. It's a good comfort show, I could rewatch it over and over. I look forward to your reactions on season 2
One of the greatest shows! In terms of tone, it reminds me of Taika Waititi's films where you laugh out loud and then he crushes you. Love when content can do that. Also, as much as you like character writing, you should absolutely watch Fleabag! 😊
I want to see Natalie watch: 1. Pacific Rim 2. Into the Spiderverse 3. A Quiet Place II 4. Skyfall 5. Little Women 6. Sherlock series (bbc) 7. Only Murders in the Building 8. The Umbrella Academy 9. Cobra Kai
I wanna see her react to Master and Commander. And one that would never happen would be The Wind that Shakes the Barley, my favorite Ken Loach film and my favorite Cillian Murphy performance.
Oh man, Only Murders in the Building! Spiderverse, and Sherlock. ABSOLUTELY I think Spiderverse, even with all the praise it gets, is still some how underrated. It is that good of a production.
Hey Nat, You mentioned liking The Office and Parks and Rec. Producer Michael Schur was part of both. After Parks and Rec, Schur was showrunner/ EP of *The Good Place*, which aired on NBC. It is easily the best network comedy in the last few years. It involves the interactions of six characters and their development in the afterlife following their ignominious deaths. It's wonderfully heartfelt and hilarious and warm, with some of the best writing, ever. I'd really love to get your take on it in this channel!
Learning that Nat is a Eagles fan makes me love this channel more. GO BIRDS!🦅 I was Coach Beard for Halloween parties this year and my soccer teammate went as Roy
When Rojas runs in, he is cheering his name. Just like a kid making pretend when they hit a home run, score the winning touchdown, etc. (And the crowd goes wild!!!)
one of the creators is actually the guy who made Scrubs and you can totally tell. That mix of weird comedy, earnest humanity and the dark parts of life is what made Scrubs so unbelievably good and comforting to watch and it's what makes Ted Lasso so good. So, if you're looking for recommendations ... Scrubs! :-)
Behind the scene story as Jason Sudeikis mentioned in one of his interviews, he really did hit his head by accident and they had to patch him up after that scene. By the way i love watching your reactions. It's like watching a friend react, the friend that i've been trying to convince to watch Ted Lasso since forever.
I binged watched season 2, it is even better than season 1 and so much humour and moments. Roy is my favourite character. The character development of so many characters is brilliant. I need season 3 now.
Finally watched this show - utterly charming and (bitter)sweet, cracking on with Season 2 now. Thanks as always for your great reactions. (Little shout out to Liverpool, my home from home)
Watched this show by myself and loved it. Didn't think I'd enjoy it all over again through your watch channel! Your reactions are amazing, hilarious, and spot on! Thank you!
Literally watching Nat react to this show made me subscribe to her Patreon to see the full uncut episodes and it was totally worth it to hear this woman curse. It was like watching a female Roy Kent. 🤬🤬🤬
I wouldn't say this is the best show ever made, but what I would say is that I've never seen a show that after seeing it I realized my heart's been having a ted lasso-shaped hole. And I could say the same about the world in general. In a world (and at a time) where everybody seems to be on each other's throats all the time, I've never seen anything more NEEDED.
just watched the first episode, it was the first video of yours I've watched, literally clicked homepage button on youtube, the first thing I see is the second episode being released half an hour ago. LITERALLY THE TIME I STARTED WATCHING THE FIRST EPISODE. amazing, thank you universe, and natalie as well..
If anyone wonders why they are so lovely together, Higgins and Julie are married irl - Jeremy Swift and Mary Roscoe, and that's about the most charming piece of casting ever.
I watched this show for the first time in the summer and loved it, instantly. It is such a heartwarming and funny show, and you fall in love with the characters 'cause they're great. Can't wait to see you react to the 2nd season.
I like how the ending of the season really plays into Ted's philosophy that he declared to Trent Crimm: It's not about the wins or losses, it's about helping his players become the best they can be. Jamie "scored" by passing the ball to his teammate, something he never would've willingly done before the treatment room "exorcism". Ted has had a positive impact on Jamie, more so than any of the other characters. Roy always had a heart of gold, Ted only helped him to become a little bit better as a captain. Keeley is just a female version of Ted. Rebecca's breakthrough came from her own guilt and Keeley's motivation. Jamie is Ted's real victory in season 1.
The show is designed to be three seasons. The producers like to say it’s loosely structured like the original Star Wars trilogy. Season 1 was A New Hope, etc.
one of things i like about Ted Lasso show is that it doesn't string out storylines with fluff. Obviously the Becka plot made it most of season one, but once the secret was out, it was dealt with. Almost like the old school tv shows where each storyline is finished before the credit roll on the end. But it still continues a storyline through the episodes. And Roy Kent is my spirit animal.
That tone is a hallmark of Bill Lawrence (see also Scrubs and Shrinking). There are not many who can thread the needle with being this funny (almost goofy at times) and then soul crushingly honest.
