Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video every Wednesday. Friday, and Sunday at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a RU-vid channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Life on the farm..fixing stuff that breaks at the wrong time...You should take part of that shed and make it into a shop with a concrete floor and insulate it so you do maintenance in the winter time. It keeps all your tools and parts in the one area. That was our wintertime work getting ready for the next year. It sucks working off of a dirt floor..

@@HowFarmsWork It's AMAZING how much more work you can get done working on concrete... worked on dirt and gravel for YEARS but finally poured a 24x24 slab and put a big tall carport over it for a "farm shop"... tools still in the garage beside it but STILL, just being able to work on stuff and not have bits go missing in the grass or dirt... it's huge, and didn't cost a fortune... Even if you guys just concreted THAT END of your shop directly behind the door, it'd be huge... Just sayin' know you got plenty of places for your money to go on the farm, never any shortage there believe me I know... Later and take it easy! OL J R :)

Those should be standard bearings. Bearings like that are sold by series. 100, 200, 300 series and are usually stocked by autoparts stores. I worked at O'Reilly Autoparts for 9 years and have helped people with these bearings many times. Used on everything from go-karts to heavy equipment. They come in large variety of configurations. no seals (open), fiber and stainless steel. All you need to know is the bore size and shaft size. If you bring in the original bearing they can measure it and give you a matching bearing. BCA and Timken are probably the top two brands you will find in the autoparts stores.

@@augustreil I had a guy who's daughter raced small engine dragsters. Single piston lawnmower engines powering them and they had a special procedure to make them a bit faster. They would remove the seals and clean out the grease with brake clean. Then they would coat the bearings in fluid film and reassemble them. Apparently the resistance from the grease slows them down.
@augustreil
@augustreil 4 года назад
@@FoolOfATuque, Wow, I cannot believe you just said that. We used to grass drag snowmobiles and one of the first things we did was to replace the oil in the chain drive with tranny fluid and any other thing we could with a lighter, thinner oil, including bearings with oil instead of grease. It makes a huge difference in racing, just have to keep up the maintenance a little more. Thanks !

No offense meant but, this is where we always had our MoCo lay the hay flat instead of in a windrow. Cut first thing in the morning, by mid afternoon, was dried perfect, even with high humidity levels. So long as we had wind and some sunshine, hay was ready by late afternoon. Be careful when raking that hay, you don't want to big of a windrow, can cause you a bigger issue with the baler. Had this happen to us with an old Vermeer round baler. Modify those wheel hubs, install grease fittings.

Purchased my first Tedder in 2002. It was the first in my area. The other hay growers in my area couldn’t see the point in tedding. It was a waste of fuel, time and damaged the crop. I got out of the hay business in 2011. Fast forward to 2016. Those same hay growers that thought it was a waste of time. Magical discovered a hay tedder was the next best thing then sliced bread. Now if you don’t use a Tedder you are doing something wrong. Go figure. We cut our hay around 4 pm. Then run the Tedder in the opposite direction we cut it. Found it spreads and fluffiest the hay better. Also if the hay is going to get rained on. Go and rake the hay in a tight window. After the rain use the Tedder spread out the windrow to start drying it again.

My brother has a wider tedder with six rakes that you can reverse the gears and it rakes the hay back into windrows for baling. What's nice is it doesn't need a larger tractor, he uses a 40-hp utility tractor instead of his larger row-crop tractor...the ride's a little easier in the lighter machine.

Think the term you were looking for there was "sealed" bearings versus "greasable" bearings with no side seals. Yeah those SHOULD be sealed bearings from the factory, unless the seals quit and gave out and fell off (somehow, usually they just pop off and ride on the shaft when the bearing gets sloppy and the seal breaks loose from the outer race. Actually it'd be FAR better if they put GREASABLE bearings in there since you could hit them once in awhile with a grease gun, but then some guys go ape and don't think it's greased til grease is shooting out everywhere, and of course on tedder wheels down in the dirt and chaff and straw, it'd get covered with dust and stick grass to it and start wrapping (which is why the anti-wrapping shields are there to help prevent it from wrapping grass around the axles and packing it in around the bearings and forcing dirt into the bearing and seals and ruining them.) ANYWAY, glad yall got 'er fixed and ready to go for next time. Later! OL J R :)

cover ground faster that's for sure... but the bigger the tedder the more expensive they are, too. This one is a demo unit anyway, part of that Rhino ag deal he's got with the company. Not sure if he bought it or not, not my business LOL:) Anyway, yeah a little bigger tedder would speed things up for sure, and be a better use of fuel and time. I noticed in the video too that this one is just a WEE bit too small for catching two windrows out of that Kuhn mo-co... with the wider cutting width they're just a little too far apart for the outer baskets of the tedder to be able to get the ENTIRE windrow by the looks of it... @heartwoodfarms9982
@heartwoodfarms9982 4 года назад
Depending on the hay and the weather........yes.
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 4 года назад
Depends on the crop and weather like Heartwood Farms said... A lot depends on the area. Here in SE TX we can cut thick grass hay one day, rake about 24 hours later at 50% moisture and bale about 24 hours after that at ~12% -15% moisture or so... No tedding is required. Get into making early spring or late fall hay, though, and you better have a tedder available. Most of the guys here use just 3 point disk mowers, no conditioners, but for some crops like sorghum-sudan, a conditioner makes a huge difference. Everybody here rakes, but most don't do it right (run the rake right ahead of the baler, which puts sunburned, sun-bleached over-dry hay in the windrow and crushes a lot of leaves off of it in the process, even in grass hay, and a lot of guys bale too dry and thus you'll see a baler running and leaves and chaff just POURING out the back because it's crushing all the leaves off of it as it's baling and dumping them on the ground as chaff and dust. Most of the BTO's will cut hay and leave it flat on the ground for 5 day to a week and then rake right ahead of the baler when it's crispy and crunchy and they hay is roasted beyond recognition... Basically they can take "fertilized bermudagrass" in its prime and turn it into something about as nutritious as wheat straw... Later! OL J R :)
