A must to hear...from whence this song was taken. Live Bonnie Raitt and John Prine, who wrote Angel From Montgomery from 1971, performing a duet. It is beautiful. Good choice, men.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8TQK2h2BPNM.html - this is THE best version of this song. My god, her voice always makes me want to cry every time I hear her sing this.
I prefer Bonnie Raitt singing it by herself. If the duet your referring to is the same one I’ve seen, JP is way past his prime and doesn’t sound so good IMO
Couldn’t agree more with this comment and this is the version of I Pity the Fool you should check out. Shows off her vocal and guitar talent. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SvUsueNJnB8.htmlsi=uouwz1d3BOSDslL7
Followed her for years and seen them livre several times never heard anything bad about her. somebody has her confused with someone else. She's the best and the sweetest person ever. They are pretty much the only band I'm ready to pay money to see live anymore.
I have followed Susan before she met Derek. She is easy going yet knows her music! She came from a wealthy NE family, trained at an elite music college, yet is down to earth and humble. NEVER heard diva vibes about her. That is why Eric Clapton, BB King and others loved her so. Talented and appreciates and encourages other talent. Check out “Pity the Fool” live, she is wearing black … You will see her vocal And guitar abilities on fire ! Derek gives her a rose when song ends. After a giving her a towel for perspiration! Lol❤
I've spent some time with Susan. Can't say I know her well, but she was always incredibly warm, generous and genuine. Quick story -- I had lunch with her a few other folks in the band about 10 years ago in Boston. Went to the show that night at HOB and was treated so well by the whole group. Truly something I won't forget. Several years later, I was at one of their shows at the Beacon in NY. One of the band's crew who I'd become friends with brought me backstage. We were catching up, having a drink, and Susan comes up behind me and signals to my friend to take a picture. She gives me "bunny ears" as he took a picture. She remembered our lunch, we chatted for a bit, and she was cool as hell.
I have NEVER heard anyone say that Susan was a DIVA. The band members of hers and then when meshed with Derrick's all seemed to work together and have stayed together
RIP to the great Kofi Burbridge, the keyboard and flute player. His brother Oteil was in an early version of this band as well as being the bass player in the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead offshoot band Dead and Company. "Sugaree" is Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia song. Also, I've been following Susan's career since the 90's and I've never read that she was hard to work with. In reading interviews and hearing her speak, she never been anything but gracious. But hey, there could have been that one time...
This husband and wife are two of their generation's best roots/blues/rock musicians. Tedeschi and Trucks are widely respected by both their past heroes and their peers today. The band is so talented; the skill of musicianship is beyond excellent. They come across as a soulful family playing from the heart. Keeping a big band together is hard work. Thanks for playing such great music.
Ive followed Susan for years! Her vocals have become stronger & sweeter over the years. I can't imagine her being a diva!? Loved the flute...great version of this song. Love Bonnie Raitt singing it with John Prine. John's song writing is pure gold. RIP John Prine🌹 I have loved this song for decades. Susan sounds like an angel here. But she can belt out a song too.👍🏼
Well, I had never heard that Susan was a difficult diva to work with until you guys. So I googled it and came up with nothing except that they paid their band and crew out of pocket during the covid shutdown. Doesn't seem like a bad person to me. Her's, Derek's and the band's talent is off the charts to me. Peace!
Exactly, this recent Layla performance shows her as the team player she is, always encouraging the others...when Derek gets some feedback squeal from his guitar trying to get ready for the slide part in the ending instrumental, she just shrugs and laughs it off, not very diva-like behavior ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v3hB2zB_TmU.html
Everyone I have ever met says both she and her husband are both ultimate humans. They pay that huge band, the crew, and everyone associated with their universe with respect. Listen to an interview with them 😊
TTB is MUST SEE! As for personality, Derek is the most humble, grounded person you'll see in showbiz. Note interviews with Beato, etc. Can't see him aligning at home or on stage with a diva. I'm just going to continue to enjoy the profound soul and relatable presentation by Susan that, in my view, can only come from a place of self-discovery and empathy...
This band is finally getting the accolades they rightly deserve. Sold out shows at MSG and The Garden. They played 2 nights here in Connecticut this summer and both shows were amazing.
I'm an old man. I don't hear "new" stuff very often. This was awesome. I've seen John Prine do this. I've seen Bonnie Raitt do this. This version is fanfuckingtastic...
"Angel from Montgomery" is a John Prine classic. Bonnie Raitt does a dynamite version as well, both solo and as a duet with John (who wrote it). You guys need to jump to a dose of singer songwriters. You've done some, like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, but Prine is golden. Hit "Hello in There", "Sam Stone", or "Dear Abby".
Great version - love this band! For me, however, the gold standard cover of this song is Bonnie Raitt’s version. There is an old video on RU-vid of her doing this song - you really need to check it out. Promise, you won’t be disappointed!
Susan: Just won't burn I pity the fool Hurt so bad Voodoo woman Derek: everything he plays Sahib Teri Bandi Sit in with Dave Matthews (lie in our graves) His magnum opus is "Passaquan" imo.
Best band out there for me . Privileged and I mean privileged to see them live last year . The whole band were absolutely outstanding and Derek’s jaw dropping guitar work had me giggling in my seat with pure amazement . Could not believe my eyes . Simply simply OUTSTANDING ❤❤❤❤. Weekend coming up gents so have a good one 👍😘
I saw Susan at the Tulsa Blues Fest years back before she was married and she was touring for her second album release. Let me tell you, it was amazing. Now, I want to see her live again with Trucks!!!
A John Prine tune covered by Bonnie Raittt obviously a influece om Susan.Their vocal stylings are very similar. Gtateful Dead and ithers have also done a cover of the song. Up musical interpretation by all who cover it. The flute here is an amazing add.
Keep it up guys, your reactions are great. Flutist and keyboard is Kofi Burbridge, a child flute prodigy that pick up keyboards at music school as a teen. Also Susan Tedeschi did sing in the Berkeley University gospel choir while earning a double music degree by age 20.
She was a constant tourer of the mid-atlantic region for years... small to large events, and it's a shame that she didn't ascend to the stratosphere until she married Derek. I do love when he's featured on lead guitar... he's pretty amazing. I also have talked with many people who have been around her over the years - nothing but good things, though.
Saw them a few years ago in Virginia Beach, VA and definitely got my monies worth. They always put a bunch of talented folks on the stage, but the core of the ensemble is what makes this band tick (Derek on slide, Susan on lead vocal/guitar, and current keyboardist Gabe Dixon). Just a mass of talent on display, don't pass up a chance to see this band if they come to your neck of the woods. Great reaction, TY.
I just saw this band last July, and they were fantastic. Doesn’t matter what type of music you’re into, these guys are a must see for any music lover. The first song was written by John Prine and it appeared on his self titled debut album in 1972 and was a regular part of his shows after that. The second song was written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia and first appeared on Garcia’s debut solo album (“Garcia”) released in 1972. This song showed up often in both the set lists of the Grateful Dead and Garcia’s various solo projects over the years.
I've seen them multiple times since they began as Soul Stew Revival. You won't be disappointed. I've heard Susan refer to the backup singers as the choir. They are all capable of singing lead. Sugaree is a Jerry Garcia song.
I catch TDD a half dozen or so times a year. Best touring band out there right now. Both Derek and Susan are super nice and humble people. I like Gabe but no one can replace Kofi. Rest in Power.
In all my years following this band, first time I’ve ever heard Susan was difficult to work with.. not buying it- high standards for some are difficult for others ..
RIP Kofi! Sure miss you brother! I certainly don’t know Susan but I worked stage at two shows here in Birmingham and found her to be nothing but gracious, kind, and generous with her time! If you’re gonna cover somebody Prine and Garcia are great choices!
I have been to hundreds of concerts beginning with the first back in 1971. It has now been many years since I been…just have not had enough interest in getting out to see a live band. Except earlier this year when I finally saw Tedeschi Trucks Band band in a video playing live. It stirred me. This is the band that is going to get me back out to live music!
Saw them not too long ago at Boston Garden. Amazing show. Warren Haynes came out for a couple Allman Bros tunes, and Into the Mystic by Van Morrison. Lucky to see them live every time
Don’t know if you’ve checked it out yet, but Susan is one of multiple exceptional female vocalists in the Playing for Change version of When The Levee Breaks, featuring JPJ himself. Worth the watch!
“Old lady pinches hurt.” I couldn’t sit still either. Got to see her a few years ago. ‘Angel’ performance was marred but a woman constantly shouting ‘I love you’.
I'd love to hear you guys dive into the catalog of John Prine, who wrote Angel From Montgomery. He was a legendary and massively influential songwriter and singer. His songs can make you laugh and cry and are recognizably true.
I’m going to start by saying you guys give me the satisfaction of 😮seeing a genuine knowledgeable reaction to the very best music. Thank you sincerely. My request is entirely based on your discussion about the top five female singers. I’m just about eighty and music began in the middle 50’s. Listened to more music than I can remember so reactions are like being young again. Anyway l truly hope you guys will listen to Eva Cassidy singing her rendition of Over The Rainbow. She has sadly passed in 1996 at age 33 from Melanoma Cancer. I am betting that you both will have a new nominee for the top five female singers. Keep on banging man, love you guys. Peace.
John Prine wrote some good songs.. This one included. I would recommend a song of his called "Sam Stone", or for a less heavy song maybe try "Illegal smile" or "In spite of ourselves" Or his version of this song duet with Bonnie Raitt. We lost John to the Covid pandemic a couple years back. BTW respect for that flute playing..
This band & Susan are one of the best live bands. You guys should hear Bonnie Raitt's version of this, as well. Also, you should review Bonnie Raitt's live double album. Blues, Rock, groove, everything you could want! Love to see all your reactions!
You need to see them live! It’s a spiritual experience. Unfortunately this was filmed when Kofi Burbridge was still alive and he was an incredibly talented multi-instrumentalist. Gabe Dixon is the current keyboardist and he shares lead vocals along with Susan and Mike. They are a solid band and one of the best live performers today.
They did this mashup when I saw them last year. Great show from beginning to end. Go see them as soon as you can. You should also look into the American treasure that is John prine. Arguably Americas greatest songwriter.
The ad that played before your video was for Todd Snider's new album. Todd Snider sings a song called "Dope is Dope" on fantastic album called "Rest in Chaos" created by a supergroup called Hard Working Americans. The album is a classic. You would love "Dope is Dope".
You guys missed the best versions of this. You should have listened to the version with Grace Potter. Derek chimes in on that one. Mike Mattison the background singer wrote midnight in Harlem. If you do see them you will see she is not a Diva. Mike comes out and sings at least two songs. Everyone in the band has a solo at some point. Also the band as you see it has been together since 2010, except Kofi Burbridge the floutest and keyboard player, who died in 2019 of a heart condition. Anyway, over the COVID shutdown the whole band lived at Susan and Derek’s compound down in Jacksonville, FLA. Together they wrote and recorded four albums between 2021-22, and now they are touring the albums. I hope you listen to I pity the fool next, or listen the the NPR tiny concert.
I never got the impression Susan's a diva. Whenever I hear interviews, she and Derek seem like big gentle souls just trying to make the best music they can. I always come away wanting them to adopt me, though I'm so old I suppose it should work the other way round. And they're a wonder to see live, you should make it a priority.
EXCELLENT reaction fellas. She does give me goosebumps. And there song are originally from Angel From Montgomery by John Prine and Surgaree By the Grateful Dead.. Two of my all time favorites. Both singer and song. EXCELLENT REACTION FELLAS! Appreciate you 🙏 ❤
Beautiful song beautiful voice and flute solo was a nice touch... Tedeschi Trucks Band all day. Hope you get a chance to work with or at least see them
I'm so honored to be seeing Susan tedeschi at the boch Wang theater Friday oct 4 Boston I'm a huge fan I cry everytime I hear angel from Montgomery brings me to my knees I'm gonna have a good time
Have seen this bunch 2x at the Mother Church, the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Both shows were sell-outs. Now I see why. Top notch all around. Susan studied at Berklee College, Derek a guitar virtuoso ala Duane Allman, 2 drummers, a horn section, prominent keyboards…we met folks there who had seen them in Louisville, KY the night before….go see them for yourselves! Hope to see you there….look for the old chicano in a wheelchair! Your reactions are priceless to me! Cheers!
Susan is incredibly talented singer and very capable blues guitarist. Kofi Burbridge (keys and flute) was a musician musician! Lost him way too soon but his talent will forever live in my heart. RIP to one of the greats.
