To become more awakened while venturing further into the dream states, life can seem so strangely paradoxical at times as we navigate thru the maze of our consciousness. . . Beautiful lucid presentation. . . Thanks Charlie. . .

Reoccurring nightmares from a young age gave me the ability to become consciously aware while i dream. Travelling to another dimension of reality is only truly comprehensible once you've experienced it. I've lost count of how many times i've been confronted by a black figure, which coincidentally i also describe to everyone as "the shadow"! It's feels like hearing myself explain what it's like to come face to face with terror, for years i have fought against it, but i've never had the courage to embrace it... After hearing another person say something so similar to my own experiences it's clear there is a mysterious power to be unlocked. Seems like i have some shadows to bear hug

In my recent lucid dream i was being chased by a group of cannibals. I came to realize that the only way i would survive is if i talked to them as if they were a "normal" human. I approached them after being chased for what seemed like an hour. and i said to the leader of the cannibals "I respect you." The rest of the dream i walked around with them and asked them why they did what they did. I woke up feeling proud of my self and felt physically and mentally lighter. Thanks for sharing Charlie!

the most i can lucid dream, is when something life threatening happens in the dream I often suddenly realize 'its okay, im dreaming, i can get out of this' and ill manifest my way into a new scenario. often in my dreams im aware that all i have to do is believe it and it will happen. had a really cool flying dream before but i noticed if i started to doubt myself i would lose air rapidly!

For me, the nightmarish elements of my dreams caused me to realize I was dreaming ultimately leading me to a lucid dream experience after confronting that fear. There are no amusement parks on this planet that can rival the experience of a lucid dream. I can fly or do anything I want through these dreams...that is an amazing feeling.

Just read his book lucid dreaming (very easy read) and will be attending his (donation) workshop at Buddhist centre on 7th Oct 2017 in Bermondsey London. On this TedTalk There was no intro and he could perhaps slow down his speech tempo a little to connect more with audience but he's well prepared and concise compared to other speakers. Lucid dreaming goes way beyond what has been covered at this intro of course ie Tibetan bon tradition and preparation for bardo upon one's death. Love a lucid dream but so far it seems to only come when it wants. Hypnogogic state seems a good entry point and acupuncture definitely has given me some guidance along the way.

I don't know if this was a lucid dream...but I woke up in another room screaming and crying. I 'woke up', I think, and looking around me, only saw weird hair/web/feather like things descending all around me. I think I tried to tear/shake myself free of them (I don't remember)...but the next thing I knew, I ran out of bed and curled up on the floor in the next room in tears. My roommates laughed at me. I still can't sleep in peace. I don't ever want to feel like that again. This kind of dream-thing has happened to me several times but i've only woken up with a jolt and a fast-paced heartbeat, and been able to go back to sleep.

I was reading a forum post on one of the lucid dreams websites written by a girl who'd followed the exact opposite course that you did. She waged war against her nightmarish dream characters in a lengthy series of scary lucid dreams. When they increased in strength she increased her armies. This escalation reached unmanageable size and eventually she was trapped, incarcerated and tortured. Your method would have saved her much suffering.

I tried lucid dreaming a few years back and was able to do it on a normal basis. It helped me with me, and also let me have alot of fun too. But.. Things got a bit out of hand when I one day woke up (real life haha), and wasn't sure wether I was dreaming.. I basically ran to my light switch (lucid dreamers will know why haha) to see if I was dreaming.. I stopped trying that day, but I want to start again now, seeing how I'm more mature and feel like I can handle it. Great talk, also, good job on shedding light on the shadows part, even tho that was very obvious to me, I never thought of embracing it, or even "hugging" it haha. :)

I have had lucid dreams and thinking back it did lead me to the place of my trauma. Basically I was a ghost there, where I buried my former self. But I had no clue that's what it was at the time. But it might well be that with this awareness lucid dreaming could take you foremost to what's hidden and what you need to resolve. There is a Swiss author on this subject and the book is quite fascinating: Werner Zurfluh

This spoke LOUDLY, can't seem to stop having the same nightmare over and and over... yes it's so lucid it's hard to tell if it's fake. The emotions are SO INTENSE im lost in it while dreaming. I do not notice that I'm dreaming but rather that I'm frustrated that I know to display the challenge but get lost in emotion before I can even try to rationalize. So it happens again and again. Maybe I'll meditate and try getting more control in this reality so I can do so in dream...any suggestions please?..any.....!

HI Charlie, loved your talk and absolutely agree with everything that you said. I've recently been making a point of embracing my shadow side and its a great journey, so your talk revealed another way of looking at areas which I might find harder to access consciously. I happen to live in the Canaries so would find it hard to go to a workshop. Is there any material online, websites or books that you would higly reccommend? Are there any risks of doing lucid dreaming without a tutor?

This is precisely why people go to the Amazon or Mexico to do Ayahuasca. In order to get the healing benefits, this process must be done with the correct intent and preparation. In Ayahuasca ceremonies, a true shaman is needed to direct these shadows you are talking about... He usually does that with specific songs (called icaros), tribal sounding music and also by blowing smoke from specific plants. He can recognize the harmful energy patterns and remove them if you are ready to let go of them.

I dont know if this is Lucid dreaming but I enjoy my dreams so much, its a weird place, places and things are connected in a bizzare way that doesnt make much sense I have drawn a map and it keeps expanding, I know what the places in my dreamplace are based on but they are different in my dreams, Its always some kind of mysterious vibe like Silent hill, but not gory in any way, I'm always doing alot of exploring, and its always the same dreamplace, but the dreams are never the same, I dont call them nightmares, I don't really want to, but I can't really control them in any way, but I kinda know vaguely that I'm dreaming and I never forget what happens anymore, I used to.

I'm interested in lucid dreaming, but I'm very unsure (and quite sceptical) about the consequences. I myself have a lot of Christian views, and so I don't know if Buddhism is a major part of the process. Are there any trace-like states or mind-clearing exercises? And is there a lot of spiritual context to take into account? I would appreciate a greater understanding on this, as I do not want to mess my mind up or open it up too much, but I would love to be able to try it.
@CharlieMorley
@CharlieMorley 9 лет назад
Hey Matthew :-) I have taught a lot of practicing Christians and in fact one of my friends had a full on communion with the holy spirit in one for lucid dreams so it can be a very powerful way to explore and further your faith. I do teach a Buddhist approach to lucid dreaming (in my book Dreams of Awakening) but also a totally secular approach too (in my 2nd book Lucid Dreaming a Beginners Guide)

Charlie Morley Thank you! I hope to get a copy of your books soon, so I will see how it goes :D (also, one other thing: In a lucid dream state, do you view everything through your own eyes as if in real life, or can you be looking on yourself, like watching a movie?)

I’ve been lucid dreaming since I was 11 and have been doing it ever since. 10yrs as I’m now 21. If I have 20 dreams, 8 of them are Lucid roundabout. My lucid dreams had Nothing to do with religion( I am a Christian/and by far not a perfect or righteous one )It occurred through reality checks. It’s a popular consensus that reality checks are a common and proven way to initiate lucid dreaming. I lost my wallet at the theatre when I was 11 and I had like 60bucks in there. That’s a lot of money for a kid and naturally I was devastated. Every day since when I get up from sitting down I pat my back pocket for my wallet, my front left pocket for my keys, and my front right for my phone. While dreaming one or all three of said items would be missing. This would cause me to rethink the recent past and think about where and when I could have lost my phone, wallet, etc. Then I would realize I had gone to sleep, thus I would become lucid. You can have lucid dreams that feel very real and do exciting things. I’ve flown( albeit not very high ) and I’ve made people I wanted to talk to or hangout with appear with a thought. Never in Front of my eyes though, I would turn around, think of said person and then turn back around and there they would be. That being said I would be highly skeptical of anyone saying the communed with God in their lucid dreaming( as the Holy Spirit is apart of the Trinity ). In my own experience with lucid dreaming over the past 10yrs I’ve never experienced nightmares while lucid, I hardly have nightmares at all. Maybe 4-5 times a year. The whole hugging a demon and it becoming you thing is totally plausible because when you are lucid you control your dreams. But it doesn’t necessarily mean it has deeper meaning if you don’t make it. Outside forces from outside the dream scape made the giver of this talk act a certain way in the dream. Some guy told him how he should interpret/ interact with his “shadow demon” and so he did. But if he never would have came across said person his dreaming experience would have been different. Meaning there is no universal independent shadow demon lurking in everyone’s consciousness unless you create it yourself while dreaming because you heard about it externally. Same with talking with God, One may think he is talking with God, but in reality he is having a dream about talking with God , Lucid or not. Be weary of people trying to place religious connotations on everything or claiming to know the ins and outs of the religious experience. Also be weary of those who claim to know things that simply can’t be proven, like saying there is no god.

Sean McArn I agree with all you said..its all about who you are and what you think. In my lucid dreams I would experience the superpowers like telekinesis, telepathy, flying and quick healing.... many years ago when I had any negative element in my dreams I would wake up and think about removing them from the scene , thn go back to sleep. Slowly there was no fear. But four or five times, I felt that there were some external factors which turned the dream into nightmare(I am lucid dreaming since 9 or 10 age and I am 26 now) I think that fear comes when we are sleeping in uncomfortable position or place. Body cannot function properly while its almost dead in deep sleep, so I found out that one must not let the limbs falling down, too much heat or cold could disturb the mind, and any kind of continuous/unpleasant noises all will cause the fearful dream. I once shared my Sister's lucid dream and we had similar experience at the same time but I was able to fight with negative feeling better because it wasnt my dream. That day it was amazing discovery of lucid dreaming together, however its better to do it alone for full control. In my opinion people with good concentration would have these dreams more thn those who doesnt like much details and for that reason I really feel that creative people are actually meditating in their sleep while dreaming or maybe its me because now I get many answers in my dreams and I wake up with more understanding of life and self.

Hi Charlie. Really enjoyed the talk. I'm from scotland myself, have visited kagyu a couple of times, met with lama yeshe not long ago and i have the most amazing lucid dreams. I had my longest one the other night which i can only assume went on for at least 2 or 3 hours.. I am currently reading one of your books and you had suggested meditating whilst lucid. I tried this and whatever happened was insane as the visuals i recieved were stunning and made me question alot about where we recieve our thoughts from and the process behind them. Youre book is easy to read and the techniques are excellent. You really are a master and i hope to join you in the lucid world somenight. Sweet dreams and keep up the good work!

Many thanks, I been tryin to find out about "lucid dream causes" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Siyaarter Unimaginable Superiority - (should be on google have a look ) ? It is a good one off guide for discovering how to improve your lucid dreaming results without the headache. Ive heard some interesting things about it and my m8 got excellent results with it.

I have hypnogogic hallucinations. There is no way anyone should lucid dream. This is irresponsible. It is not cool to not be able to know what is real.

Astral Projection, OBE, Astral Plane, 5th Dimension, Lucid Dream etc. takes place at the Cloning Centers. When someone projects/has an OBE (or if they’re aware while “dreaming”), it means that their consciousness has been transferred into a chipped REM-driven Mark 2 clone at a Cloning Center in the 3rd Dimension while experiencing MK Ultra visual and audio effects. Also, their clone may be pre-drugged to make it feel like a dream. These Cloning Centers are above and below ground (in DUMBs).

In our lucid dreams we are interacting with projections of our own psyche who seem as real as "real life" people. This makes the LD state a great place to engage in a kind of pycho-drama in which you could work with your anxiety in the safe space of your own mind. You can use the LD state to practice social interaction and even public speaking which will directly impact upon your practice of these things in the waking state :-)

In my opinion most people who cant tell the differnce between an OBE and an LD simply havnt had enough experience of both states. True OBE's are very different but there are lots of LD's which get misinterpreted as OBE's due to their high level of clarity. Also even if you were to do this in an OBE the power of your compassionate and fearless intent would protect you from any harm. Thats what i think anyway.

Can anyone help me with this? Every time I'm in a lucid dream the first thing I do is get myself floating around through the air. But when I'm aware like that, it seems like I cannot really experience anything other than that. When I try to experience something else, I end up thinking about the fact that I am lucid dreaming and then I wake up. Any tips?

I've tried to reply to every comment so far and so this one (although its not such a positive comment) will also receive a reply :-) I'm sorry if I seem inauthentic, its tough to be fully yourself with thousands of people watching and especially when your trying to stick to a script. Anyway, don't give up on lasting love just yet, it's out there somewhere :-) x

Metaphysics isn't that simple. It depends on your beliefs and experiences. Personally I like to think that lucid dreaming is in my head, it sounds cooler. Astral Projection is just projecting your consciousness to the 4th dimension, aka the Astral Plane. Again, it depends on your beliefs and experience, mostly experience because beliefs won't get you anywhere when you can experience something. If you're trying to figure out what to start with first, start with lucid dreaming.

A lot of people say they're scared of being lucid in a nightmare or something but I used to realize I was dreaming during nightmares and make it stop. I'd be like this isn't real, I'd rather this to happen and the dream would change. Don't be afraid, just take control

Oh wow, that sounds terrible. I've always assumed thats what would happen if one took that approach but that's really scary to hear an actual account of it. If you still have access to that forum can you tell the girl to get in touch with me if she'd like to please? :-)

I just read a book called "the wizard of earthsea" which has scene in which he hugs a shadow demon type thing too! I guess its an archetypal experience so we will find accounts similar al over the world! :-)

Yeah sorry man but weed is a big no-no for lucid dreaming :( bad for memory and reduces your REM dreaming periods. The high from lucid dreaming makes being stoned look like childs play so it definitely worth the trade! ;)

I searched on net, but I can't really seem to find much info about lucid dreaming. Is lucid dreaming actually a Tibet/Buddhism teaching of some kind? Or how is it related to Buddhism? I'm sorta interested hearing from this talk, but I'm Christian, so I'm wondering whether it's a religion thing or not.

Gideon Cheung Throughout the history, many civilizations had recorded this "state of consciousness". Stephen LaBerge was the first scientist who proved that lucid dreaming is indeed real and not a hoax or some kind of autosuggestion. If you want to learn more, I recommend you to buy Daniel Love's book "are you dreaming? ". Also Stephen LaBerge wrote a book about his findings and his experiences. Both books are easy to read, they have historical and scientific information and they don't follow a "metaphysic route". 😊😊😊

I love nightmares, though I don't have them much these days. They were a great source of information and discovery in the early days of lucid dreaming. The first time I challenged the gun toting killer to go ahead and shoot me, and his bullet bounced off of me then I knew I was in charge. Then I asked him, now isn't that better? And he fell to small pile of ashes. They are a good learning tool.

To have nightmares just sleep facing upwards. Your tongue will roll into your mouth, sleep apnea will occur and your brain will have a nightmare to wake you up. Works almost everytime.

Did i really have to go "spiritual"? Kind of yeah coz lucid dreaming taken out of the context of spiritual growth can easily become just another bit of brain candy :-)

Yeah man afternoon naps are great for LDing, you get into dream really quick and often your mind is not as tired as it is at night so lucidity can be more accessible :-)

Got your book on Lucid Dreaming and I am loving it. It's so interesting and easy to read - and very helpful! Thank you for writing it! PS: Lucid dreaming practice is very fun, even though I haven't achieved it yet after two weeks of trying. Last night I dreamt about talking to my friends about lucid dreaming, so I must be close. :D

It is such a simple concept: To tell yourself that accepting the light and the darkness of yourself shouldn't be feared, but embraced. If everyone did, how the world would change drastically. You are a great speaker. Short, but sweet. I really enjoyed. I hope there is more from you.

Really great talk Charlie, thanks for sharing. Ive been lucid dreaming for a few years but I feel Ive been wasting its real potential. I always end up just doing fun stuff (sex, flying, running really fast, eating delicious food etc) and though these things are great and like I said, theyre fun, I always feel like maybe I couldve spent my time in a more meaninful way. Any tips for focusing your activities in a lucid dream from just the base instincts into the higher functioning of the brain? I suspect my activities in the dreams are influenced not only by my personality but also by which areas of the brain are physically activated, aware or in control during the dream, in my case it seems, only the areas that deal with the animal desires.
@CharlieMorley

Try planning what to do BEFORE you get lucid. Just like writing your grocery list before yo get to the store so that you know exactly what you want to happen. Of course the dream may have other plans but at least that will help to focus you :-)

thanks for the rote! and isn't shadow bigger than just the subset of experiences we have rejected? anything hidden from our conscious experience is in umbra, i've seen some of those things as very expansive and positive spaces. AWESOME talk, loved the global healing and shadow integration message as well.
