The song title was inspired by a black Labrador that used to wander around outside Headley Grange, the place where they recorded the song. Bassist John Paul Jones came up with that killer riff and the overall structure of stop/start vocals was inspired by Fleetwood Mac's song Oh Well. Technically, this album doesn't have a title but I've most often heard it referred to as "the 4th album" by the three surviving members. The reason for it not having a title was because the band was tired of all the bad reviews the press gave their albums (especially the 3rd album because so many critics and even fans complained that there wasn't enough rock) so Jimmy said he wouldn't put a title on this album. Instead, he had each person choose a symbol to represent themselves and those 4 symbols were printed on the inner sleeve and record label. Jimmy's reasoning was people were buying their albums because the music was good, not by the hype of a name so it didn't matter if the band name was there or not. Atlantic was furious and considered it "professional suicide" to not have the band name anywhere but the band and manager Peter Grant stuck to their guns - and were proved correct; LZ IV is an iconic album.

Every Zep fan has their favorite album, but this is definitely mine. They do not hit a false note anywhere on this album, it has absolutely no filler. Even the song that's generally given the least amount of consideration, Four Sticks, is completely awesome. I know Led Zep IV will blow you away.

I think the solo here is just the best example of Page's unique style. Lot of great leads on a lot of great songs, but this one; he does things here nobody else would have thought of. If you knew Page's playing well, but somehow had never heard this, and someone played that part for you to guess who it was, you would know...

You're in for a treat Silas, their music will astonish you as you go forward, so many more great tracks on this album, the next album "Houses of the Holy" is so amazing, especially "No Quarter", then "Physical Graffiti" is doubly loaded with hit after hit, so sit back and enjoy the ride, and we all will enjoy it with you :)

Glad you enjoyed "Black Dog", Silas. It's a great song and a monster of an introduction to a fabulous album. Jones wrote the main riff. He said that he wrote it on the back of his train ticket while traveling. While playing bass for "Black Dog", it was one of the few times he used a pick. That interesting sound we hear at the very beginning of the song is Page warming up. He called it "waking up the army of guitars". He layered in four separate guitar tracks for this song. Plant apparently nailed the vocals in just two takes, which is pretty incredible. After albums 1-3, we didn't know what to expect either. We were very eager to find out what they had been working on and, as it turned out, what they had been working on was one of the greatest rock albums of all time. :) Edit: Maybe you recognized the song because it was used in a commercial for the video game Destiny: The Taken King.

What a kick to watch you react to this. I had the biggest grin on my face 😁. One of my faves by Zep. In the live version, the “ah, ah, ah, ah “ part is done as a call and response between Robert and the audience. Really the only time that Zep asked their audience to actively contribute …and that makes it even cooler

1972. I was 19, working as a busboy on weekends in a fancy restaurant in downtown Montreal. I would set up the dining room in the morning before the restaurant opened. The chef and his assistant would prepare the menu for the day. There was a high-end jukebox in the corner of the dining room and, before the rest of the staff arrived, I would put Black Dog on (it was released as a single; B side : Misty Mountain Hop). My day was off to a good start.

Cool man your really starting to get into the meat of Zeps catalog. I mean they're all phenomenal but Zep IV is greatest rock album of all time territory. To me it is. Absolute brilliant masterpiece. Physical Graffiti is right there too. It is unreal what these 4 guys created in a short ten or so years together. This song reminds me of a great video you should check out by RU-vid channel Polyphonic called "What Makes John Bonham Such a Good Drummer?" He examines Bonham's various skills and techniques using examples from their catalogue. He uses the song Black Dog to highlight the band and Bonzo's ability to play in different time signatures at the same time, to great effect. This song is a lot more challenging to hold together than it may seem at first glance. I actually give a ton of credit to Page and JPJ, all Bonzo had to do was anchor that 4/4 beat down, while they were forced to work that janky 5/4, 2/4, 7/8, 9/8, etc etc riff over top of it. It's a monster of a song, you should see it live at MSG.
@JuniorFarquar
@JuniorFarquar 2 года назад
Love how bonzo grunts and moans in the isolated drum tracks. Bernard Purdy did that, too. As you probably know, the initial riff was by JPJ who showed it to Jimmy

Blackdog is the bomb! You should bring up the lyrics because in the first talking section Plant says something very......sexual everyone misses. "Hey hey baby when you walk that way. Watch your honey drip, can't keep away." EVERYONE missus that line. lol. I will leave it upt to you to figure out what the "honey" is. When Plant went solo after they broke up, the name of one of his groups was "The Honey Drippers." Also, the song "Custard Pie" from Physical is sort of about the same subject matter. As good as Zep 4 is, I think Physical Graffiti is their masterpiece. It's a double album and the whole first album is fire. It came out in 75 and was my first album I bought myself by them that came out while I already was a fan. The other albums came out when I was not into music much.
@JuniorFarquar
@JuniorFarquar 2 года назад
Wha? Its easily under6mstood and then he was in The Honeydrippers. He didn't coin the term...old blues based lyric The term "trampled under foot" is from the Bible... Christ said: "They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled." Luke 21:24 ESV "Then I heard a holy one speaking, and another holy one said to the one who spoke, “For how long is the vision concerning the regular burnt offering, the transgression that makes desolate, and the giving over of the sanctuary and host to be trampled underfoot?” Daniel 8:13 ESV bible.com/bible/59/dan.8.13.ESV ...there are other examples, too. Cool, huh? Remember "Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer." Romans 12:12 ESV And... "I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. Blessed is the man who makes the Lord his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie!" Psalm 40:1‭-‬4 ESV Satan is the Father of Lies

I was already a Led Zeppelin fan by the time I heard this but boy did that searing guitar and punching Bonzo drums and everything just blow me away. It's just so hard but as a musician I also love the little bit of rhythmic trickery they often do and here they decided to make it very pronounced in that riff in the middle. It feels like it's kind of wandering away and then it comes back hard. He's just following a pattern of sixes over fours and Robert Plant does threes along with that all the time not to mention phrases that have four beats but the accents change every three beats so it makes it a three on four. Just to talk musicianship for a minute but oh man just the nature and the attitude of this song is searing. That's the only word I can think of for it
@jonathanlocke6404

My favorites might be II or "Physical Graffiti" (with a special place for III) but I think I would say this is their best album. It seems like even though a lot of groundbreaking work had been going in the couple of years before this (from Zeppelin themselves, bands like Pink Floyd and The Who and Black Sabbath, artists like David Bowie, and even older bands like the Stones and The Beatles) this sort of marked the moment when the 60's ended and the 70's started. It sounded that different from the Summer of Love...

I remember the first time I heard this was at a rec center dance during a Boy Scout jamboree...I was sitting on top of the jukebox, cross-legged, watching the dancers and listening to the music, and then THIS came on. Another note on this, possibly hearsay, is that when someone suggested Jimmy Page was just a rhythm guitarist and couldn't play lead (obviously an idiot), John Paul Jones told them to listen to the guitar in the outro of this song. JPJ obviously thought of it as one of Jimmy's finest, and it's hard to disagree.

You do know that putting your fingers up that way to a Brit is F off right. Even Churchill in the Second World War famously originated the V for Victory sign not the other way round like you did just at the end. The French when at war with us if the captured an archer used to cut off the first two fingers of a bowman’s right hand and l3t them go free because they would then be useless. This is because the English long bow had a pull famously of 120 lbs with a cloth yard arrow with an iron bodkin tip. It could outdistance the French cross bows, and when fired in salvo it was devastating. So please think palm forward, interestingly the Croatians victory sign was 2 fingers and a thumb palm forward as their V for victory when I was flying into Sarajevo during the war, even the children did it to us with smiles as we drove past them in Zagreb!

I like your reactions a lot more when you are not with family or girlfriend.....you seem to be more yourself......like you will stop the vid and stand up and yell or start laughing.......or just look "SHOCKED" when the music is getting to you......I have not seen you cry yet.......but it probably won't in front of Family or Girlfriend. You don't do any of that when Family or girlfriend is present........So I love your passionate reactions to this video......This is still in the beginning of Led Zeppelins Career. They just gotten a style that is being accepted worldwide even among Black people and people of color in America are just about to listen to them. However, this album silence the music critics and soar their career as one of the best Rock n' Roll bands EVER. "Stairway To Heaven" will blow your mind and make you cry....However, "Physical Graffiti" is their first Masterpiece album. "Led Zeppelin ll" would their second Masterpiece. Houses of the Holy would be their third Masterpiece. And this album would be considered their fourth Masterpiece album. You still got a long ways to go...Kid...btw....Happy Birthday!!!!

Not sure you know anything about Zep, this song was based on a black lab that hung around the mansion while they were writing and recording. Robert ad-libbed some lyrics which made seem more sexual, but there was a black dog.

@@edb6690 yeah the title, so what?? It’s a place holder when they probably couldn’t think of what to call it. But the lyrics have nothing to do with a black lab. Unless the dog was effing another dog in heat or maybe he was into dogs lol🤷🏻‍♂️
