This song is incredibly lush; the guitar overdubs become a rich, story-telling tapestry of acoustic and electric tones. My personal belief is Bonzo used a guitar case to tap out the percussion, but no one knows for sure. How did they do it? Part of it is they had a magickal combination of refined skills and raw talent. Both Jimmy and Jonesy came from the session world where in addition to their phenomenal skill with their instruments, they learned the behind the scenes skills of the studio; how to produce, arrange, overdub, etc. Jimmy produced all their albums so he learned extra tricks and methods to guarantee he got the best out of each member and propel a musical vision. Add to that already prodigious amount of talent the raw power of Robert and Bonzo. Both unknown out of their area of Birmingham in the North of England, they played in similar bands together and apart but couldn't find their big break. Led Zeppelin provided them, as well as Jimmy and Jonesy a creative outlet to expand and explore as they continued pushing the horizons of what musical communication could be.

Julie knows Zep! Listen to Julie. This song, in addition to being a JPJ baseline masterpiece, is a perfect example of Led Zep's "light and shade" sound.....light touches, then drop the hammer. The Italian word is "Chiaroscuro." They perfected this concept, ultimately culminating in Stairway to Heaven.

How did they even think of doing some like that? Creative genius. Boat loads of it. ;) "Ramble On" was co-written by Page and Plant and recorded in between concerts during their North American tour in 1969. Plant was very fond of The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien, and you can hear references to some of the events and characters of the story in the lyrics. Page wanted the guitar solo to sound more like "strings" (similar to his use of a violin bow during some of their songs) so he used a "sustain-producing" mechanism that was built for his guitar. There's a question as to what Bonham used to supplement his drums for that tapping sound, likely a guitar case, although some think it was a plastic garbage pail. Yep, this is one of my favorites too. Glad you enjoyed it so much. Thanks for a great reaction, Silas, and rock on! Edit: Thanks for the shout-out! I enjoy being a part of the community you've developed here. :)

It was a tom-tom. Remember he liked to use his hands. :)
@jmar7631
@jmar7631 2 года назад
@@ledzeppacker Many assume so but apparently the sound isn't quite right for tom-toms. From an article on the topic, "The pitter-patter drumbeat by John Bonham during the quiet parts of “Ramble On” has sparked considerable debate among drummers. Some have theorized that Bonham was hitting the sole of his shoe with drum sticks. Others say it was a plastic garbage can lid. According to Chris Welch and Geoff Nicholls in "John Bonham: A Thunder of Drums", Bonzo used his bare hands to tap out those 16th notes on an empty guitar case."

@jmar7631
@jmar7631 2 года назад
@@ledzeppacker Yes, he also played bongos and congas but on this track, it isn't clear to drummers just what he's tapping on, so the debate continues. Live, of course, he'd drum on his usual equipment but they never performed "Ramble On" all the way through live. Whatever it was, it sounded cool. ;) Edit: I sometimes wonder if Page just recorded Bonham jamming on his own in the studio and dubbed it in like he did for much of the studio version of "Moby Dick". ???

What will really blow your mind is that many of their greatest songs came together very quickly, many in just one or two takes, like the Stairway to Heaven or the Battle of Evermore. As a matter of fact, Page had never played the mandolin, picked it up, started strumming a few chords and in a take or two they had the Battle of Evermore. Just pure genius is how they came up with most of their songs.

Jimmy's whole process for the concept of Led Zep was to mix "Light and Shade", Rock and folk on each album and even the DYNAMICS of each song. Emphasizing certain areas with force or volume carries the listener.
@mikefetterman6782
@mikefetterman6782 2 года назад
Classical musical composers used crescendos and such for emphasis for hundreds of years. Even other rock bands used it before zep like the Beatles, Stones, The Who, The Doors, ect... Zeppelin was most rare by having such top line musicians in each spot. The Beatles were great songwriters and Ringo was a great musician, but John, Paul and George, were all intermediate on guitars, piano ect. Just visionary on the building process. Led Zep was like the Beatles of the 70s.

"What instrument?" - guitar. With enough volume out of the amp, the sound pressure sympathetically vibrates the guitar such as to keep the strings ringing. A feedback loop. I used to ram the headstock of my guitar against the speaker cabinet to be able to do this at low volumes. There's a horrible-sounding (to me, some use it) screechy variant where the volume vibrates the pickup magnets/coils. You can extract a lot of weird noises out of an electric guitar alone, sans effects.
@zer0thzero428
@zer0thzero428 2 года назад
A couple of extra details... it sounds like the warmer/rounder tones you get from the pickup closest to the neck. Also, I'd suggest there's a significant dose of compression used to smooth away the pick attack. It's at least double-tracked, maybe more.

I love watching your reactions !!! This time frame in music history ( mid 60's - mid 70's ) Was what most considered the most CREATIVE time. You had to be a GREAT musician at the time to make it. LZ had JImmy page ( guitarist, producer, song writer, genius!!) John Paul Jones ( bass, keys, song writer genius) Robert Plant ( vocals, harmonica, song writer genius) John Bonham ( drummer, vocals, also some song writing) All these guys were the very best at their craft. They are still ranked in the top 10 of what they play. John Bonham is considered the best drummer ever to this day , yes he could play fast,, but it'sthe extra little things he does that makes him so great ( he is the most sampled drummer)!! Jimmy is by may considered the best, but usually tied in 2nd or 3rd with Eric Clapton, JPJ IMO is is the best bass/keys , but usually ranked 4th-8th, Robert is considered the best rock singer ( Freddy mercury) has been put on top, but Robert would talk to the crowd durning a concert just like he was your friend , and could make you feel a certain way by singing an "ohh" or an 'ahh" had a beautiful voice, especially with an acoustic song. I was so blessed to have a friend who's father had a LG. Private jet and was able to get us to the concerts and tickets to loads of zep concerts. And other bands as well. IMO the best zep concert was earls court 1975 25th. Almost 4 hours. I don't believe there has ever been a group of guys as talented before or after LZ. Bands have tried !!! Remember Jimmy page didn't really care if he made a mistake, it was all about the feeling ( he could play fast, but it's not about how fast you play) ( even on an album) he thought it gave the song more character ( he could play precise,, he was after all the most sought after session guitarist in the UK), he played on the kinks, stones, who, Joe cocker, James bond sound track, and loads more ( in his teens) It's wonderful watching you hear this stuff for the first time.. NO auto tune .. pure real music. Try to pretend the camera is not there while listening. Just relax and feel the music, forget about looking at the camera.

Speaking with clenched teeth and having uncontrolled jerks are signs of rock'n'roll overdose. You'll need to sit down in a quiet corner, far away from any electronic devise and take deep breaths. You're okay, lad, just fifty years late to the party. I have this record in my collection since 1972 and it bears the marks of my vandalistic temper. Your next step on the journey should be to lend yer ears to Deep Purple In Rock. Now THAT was a pivotal album in music history. Drew the absolute line in the sand between flower-power and heavy rock in that time period. Cheers lad. Greetings and well-wishes from Belgium.
