According to Page, "Rock and Roll" developed spontaneously. While trying to wrap up the recording of "Four Sticks", which had an extremely difficult drum section, Bonham was getting frustrated and starting drumming out a song by Little Richard, a well-known musician, singer and songwriter. Page said, "We were recording something else when John Bonham started playing the drum intro to "Keep a Knockin'" by Little Richard and I immediately started playing the riff for "Rock And Roll". Instead of laughing it off and going back to the previous song, we kept going. "Rock And Roll" was written in minutes and recorded within an hour." Plant wrote the lyrics and Ian Stewart, known for his work with The Rolling Stones (LZ was using their recording studio), was on hand to play piano, which was very cool. Glad you liked it, Silas. Plant does that thing with his vocals because he was just that good. Best rock singer of all time in my book. Not all the songs on this album are like the first two. LZ had too much to say musically for it all to be the same. Later on the album, you'll hear "Stairway to Heaven", which is regarded by many to be the greatest rock song of all time. I didn’t start making a study of Zeppelin and Page and Plant until the pandemic when I had allot of time on my hands…and then I did a DEEP dive….books, podcasts, interviews etc. and turned from normal, just liking them fan, into a devoted, “my favorite band ever” fan. Henrietta has me beat though…..she’s been an AVID fan for years…especially ANYTHING Jimmy….😁😏
I will address all of you. I have been totally addicted to Zeppelin since their inception and I’m ok with that. As soon as I heard THOSE VOCALS I was done for. Then I started noticing each of the instruments individually and I just couldn’t believe what was going on. And I was ok with that!!! I would come home from school flop into my bean bag chair put my head phones on spark one up and crank up the Zep!!! Life was good!!! They were musical geniuses that absolutely shattered the bar!!! Waiting for your favorite record store to open to get the new Zeppelin album taking it home and listening to it from the first track to the last track then starting all over again this usually involved a few friends and you made a party out of it and you were ok with that!!! I think every fan connects with 1 of the 4 for their own personal reasons. Mine has always been Robert but I do feel that each of the others are #1 at their craft. I saw LZ, Saw Robert on solo tour 2 times, met him 1 time, saw Plant & Page 2 times & Plant & Krauss 2 times. I’m still learning things about Zeppelin and RP. I’m enjoying teaching my grandkids whether they want to know or not and I’m really enjoying watching these kids on here being introduced to the best band to ever grace the stage…Hammer of The Gods….& to think they are enjoying their Zep journey 50+ years after I first did, but I’m still on mine so we are on it together and I’m alright with that!!!!! ☮️🎤🇺🇸❤️🇬🇧🏴🦁🪶🍋🎸🥁

There were a lot of good musicians and bands out there during that time but what set Zeppelin apart was not just that they were "the most talented musicians who ever lived", their compositions and arrangements perfection, it was also that "unknown factor". They didn't just "click", there was something else going on, which is why when performing live, if Page or Plant started to spontaneously improvise, none of the others even batted an eye. The piano is played by Ian Stewart, who was actually a founding member of the Rolling Stones. He eventually became that band's road manager because their general manager felt he just didn't fit in with the sort of "bad boy" image they were trying to project on stage. He continued to perform on recordings, though...
It wasn’t the “bad boy” thing so much as he was quite a bit older and a very large man who wasn’t a “pretty boy” like the others. I can’t remember who said it but I believe in Keith Richards’ autobiography he mentions that someone said that Ian looked more like a bouncer at a club they were playing at rather than a member of the band. Bloody hell, couldn’t he play though!
No one toured with Zeppelin they were it. No one could take the stage with them on the bill. Funny story Zeppelin's first gig, Vanilla Fudge was the headliner and Zeppelin opened for them. ZEPPELIN blew the place apart and Vanilla Fudge was practically booed off the stage. Because of this no band would take the stage with Zeppelin on the bill. They were that much superior than anyone else. I was a teen when they started in 1968. They took the world by storm and stood as the best Rock Band period. They were to the 70's what the Beatles were to the 60s. You mentioned Jethro Tull that is a band you want to checkout. KEEP ROCKIN !!!

Here again, the live version from MSG ‘73 is the go-to. And another truly fun version was from their 2007 Celebration Day one-off concert, where this song was their final encore. A perfect end to an iconic performance.
You need to watch the video for the live version of “Rock And Roll live at MSG in 1973”. It’s from the movie “The Song Remains The Same” and it blows away the studio version. As great as their studio albums were, what really made them legends was their live shows.
Every song on this is a banger from the heavy to the bloozy to the folky. It's a classic for a reason and with each successive album they keep it on high consistency until the last album or 2. Enjoy the ride Mr Silas.
This song was an homage to all rock and roll music leading up to early 1970s. That percussive, driving piano note/chord was very reminiscent of Jerry Lee Lewis' style.
The song used to get played almost four times a day on the radio. Or more. But it's something I never got tired of hearing. Granted I haven't heard it much in the last 20 years but it still comes around fairly frequently and if not, I'll think about it about twice a year and go put on headphones and blast it because it's just that fun. But it was really great watching it with you again. It really made me kind of remember the first time I ever heard it. It's just blazing. There's no other word for it. Blazing.

A classic Zep song. One of the most raw rockin cuts they made. It's funny to play Little Richards "Keep-A-Knockin" and hear the same exact intro. That's a great '50's songs too.

Battle of Evermore, Misty Mountain Hop along with Ramble On and Over the Hills and Far Away all have Lord of the Rings references in them as Robert Plant was a huge Tolkien fan. He even named one of his dogs during this time period, "Strider." Who is Aragorn's alter ego. Aragorn is one to the main dudes in LotR's. Stairway is considered the most popular song in rock history. There is even a running gag even today that it is called the "Forbidden Song" and your not allowed to play it in guitar stores. This is really a thing. More a joke than real but some places will tell you NO. LOL. I like stairway but it is far from their best song to me. Literally, i like 15 or more songs by Zeppelin better. This has been so much fun watching you listen to these songs for the first time. You're bringing back my memories of doing this too in the early 90s. I had the same reactions. I believe that Zeppelin 4 is the greatest selling hard rock album of all time. It is that blueprint for, and standard of excellent hard rock. Great videos, keep it up!
You might want to listen to some Grand Funk Railroad, with Mark Farner! They opened for zeppelin and the crowd went nuts, wanted them to keep playing. My favorite band!

Led Zeppelin always bringing the heat!!!!! Dave Grohl secretly planned a concert with Page and JPJ, at Royal Albert Hall, with Foo Fighters. Taylor Hawkins (RIP) played drums. They did this and Ramble On. Dave said that it was the greatest moment in his life.

For fear of stoking the ire of die hard Zep aficionados and without detracting from the quality of the track at all, I can't help but imagine Rossi and Parfitt doing this one. I think I just about covered myself.
This song is...well...rock and roll! LOL Believe it or not, there are differences between various forms of rock; there's rock and roll, rock, rockabilly, prog rock, etc. Rock and roll started in the late 1940s through the mid 1950s and encompassed elements from jazz, rhythm and blues, boogie woogie, gospel and country music. From the Little Richard flavor (if you don't know who Little Richard was, please look him up; he's an early rock and roll legend), mentioning the dance called "the stroll" and a song from the late 1950s called The Book of Love by The Monotones, and that fantastic boogie woogie piano played by the incomparable Ian Stewart. Ian was a founding member of the Rolling Stones but their manager, Andrew Loog Oldham (who, coincidentally gave John Paul Jones his stage name) decided he didn't fit the Stones' "look" so removed him from the band. He became the Stones' road manager and occasional piano player instead. It is so exuberant, you can't help but rock out to it! To my knowledge, Tull didn't record at Headley Grange, seemingly to prefer regular studio recording, often at Morgan Studios. Tull did tour with Zep and Vanilla Fudge until Zep became too big and started touring alone. Zep wasn't big fans of Jethro Tull. According to John Paul Jones "Ian (Anderson) is a pain in the ass. We toured with `Jethro Dull' once and I think he probably spoke three words to Jimmy or I at any one time... (Page) had a title for a live album when Jethro was playing in LA, `Bore 'Em At The Forum.'"

While Zeppelin was from my era - I was a in high school during the mid seventies when Zeppel;in was ruling rock - and I owned all the albums. But, every generation after has discovered them and fell in love with their music. My daughter and son were 90s teens and they would listen to Zeppelin.

The critics decided that Zeppelin wasn’t a rock band. They pissed Jimmy Page off, so he produced an untitled album as a big f*ck you to the critics, showing that they could sell it without recognition, and each band member chose a symbol to represent themselves. Atlantic records put it in a shrink wrap and identified the band. I think the first two songs established that they were indeed a rock band, and ultimately the best.
The Battle Of Evermore is an amazing song. It features a guest singer called Sandy Denny (she was the vocalist in a folk band called The Fairport Convention) And Jethro Tull are definitely worth a listen to. They did do perform at the same festival as Zeppelin once in the UK and a few times they may have opened for them in the USA but the two bands weren’t very close mainly due to their styles being soooo different but they appreciate what each band did for music in the 70s Another great reaction and looking forward to the next one
