Teen riding bike killed by hit-and-run driver in South River 

Stay on point when you ride your bike people!!! Should have NEVER happened....

That van driver sat on a soft cushion in pure comfort while that poor kid was crushed in sheer agony. Sick world.

I would have given the driver a bit of a pass on the initial hit, because the kid cut right across the street (suddenly) into his path. The driver was going far left in an attempt to go around the kid. Unfortunately, the kid thought he was clear and made an unexpected hard left into the path of the van, and the driver was going WAY TOO FAST to avoid hitting him. The driver becomes an evil criminal, however, for driving over the kid after the initial collision, when he was on his hands & knees and obviously alive (according to the guy who watched the video). Then, to top it off, he flees the scene. Cold-blooded murder. Ironically, the camera would have helped the driver if he had stayed and assisted the kid after the initial collision. It would have shown that the kid swerved into his path. But the camera was ultimately his downfall, since it recorded his choice to run over the kid after the initial collision. What an evil fool.

Parents must warn the kids careful when they're riding the bike on the street or sidewalk

Dude could have blown the horn and just waited till the kid crossed over kid knows he was in the wrong lane

I live in Freehold. And because of health reasons I don't drive so I get around on a bike. I've seen people driving crazy and I come up with all sorts of ways to go around Rt 9 to try and stay safe.

Everyone keeps blaming the kid, I get it but he was only struck and fell. The van driver stopped after he hit the kid, the kid was alive and likely to make a full recovery. Accidents happen. But why did the van run over the kid after the accident? That's just murder right there. The murder is on the van driver. The accident was the kid's fault.

So this van was trying to go around the cyclist, and decided to pass in a no passing (double line) area. The cyclist was turning left at the same time, with no hand signals to indicate as much. The van unlawfully accelerated to hasten their illegal passing, increasing the speed at which this person was struck and ran over. The van is clearly in the wrong, with their impatience and illegal passing to blame for this person losing their life. I see people in the comments blaming the cyclist, which they'd most likely do even if the cyclist had used hand signals to indicate they were making a turn. The person driving broke the law and killed someone in their hurry to not be behind and share the road with a cyclist. Not a unique attitude on either count. Bicyclists are to follow motor vehicle rules, and the other vehicles on the road need to do the same. Don't drive if you lack patience to follow traffic laws and share the road with other travelers. I hope the deceased gets justice in the legal system. This person should never drive again.

It would have just been an accident but since the driver of the van took off it's a lot more than hit and run it's murder

He’s been charged with Aggravated Manslaughter and leaving the scene - something else too. That boy was alive when that scum tried to save his own butt by running over the boy to make his getaway. Witnesses saw the boy up on his forearms, turn to look at the van and was then brutally run over. Him trying to escape killed that boy. Manslaughter sounds to mild, how about murder?

Did the car jump the curb? Hit him on the sidewalk? What are you people teaching your kids??? We were taught to watch for the cars. Not just zoom out into traffic. This was in the 80's! I think you people are sacrificing these kids. Yeah the driver should go to jail, but our parents didn't care about that! The driver going to jail isn't going to fix your kids bones, pay the hospital bills, pay for permanent 24 hrs care, or being your kid back to life! The biker was reckless but he was a 14 year old child and he more that likely would have been fine if the van didn’t run him over . The van stopped when it hit him then decided to run him over. If the car is not stolen they will find the driver cameras are everywhere.

The driver tried to go around him and hit the brakes, but his decision to keep driving and speed up after initialing trying to stop makes it murder. Why not just keep trying to stop?

I feel bad for that boy. However, he was also wrong. He should've been riding on the far right of the lane, not crossing into motorized moving traffic. The driver should be found and tried for hit & run and vehicular homicide.

Unfortunately, the kid made a sharp unexpected turn without looking if the driving lane was accessible. However, the van is equally at fault, a) he could have easily stopped or at least used brakes as first reflex action, and that the van was not at that much high speed, b) the van driver or any driver, as part of defensive driving strategy, must be ready for the unexpected, and especially here when someone was bicycling in front of him that he was about to pass him at presumably at shoulder. The driver is not a smart driver. I wouldn't be surprised if he is one of those uneducated Hispanic fools that drive these kinds of vans and box trucks and more often don't obey common sense rules.

We might all look at this video and granted be angry but at the same time how many of us drive like animals on cars in front of us going to slow then zig around like we are angry with that driver with all the potential of us also striking a kid crossing the street??? Dont be a hypocrite folks!!! Slow it down at all times and take a breather, the way we drive matters

This makes me sick. I see cars do this all the time and it makes no sense because a 25 mph limit road won’t get you around town fast anyways unless you’re speeding. The kid panicked and tried to move out of the way upon hearing the van but the unhinged van driver figured that saving 10 seconds off the commute was more important than safely passing. Assuming the driver was doing the speed limit, they could’ve easy braked in this situation but was definitely doing above the limit since the braking failed 😡

That’s not how u ride a bike. It’s sad tho that’s why when I’m driving pass anyone on a bike I take another lane over to go pass them the driver should’ve stop and not drive away that’s on the driver even tho the kid ride in the car path

It does appear he was trying to drive around the kid, but honestly he should have just slowed down. He definitely should have stopped, called 911, and waited after the initial hit. He probably assumed the kid was dead, since he was on the ground and made the cold decision to run him over. That kid did not deserve the pain or fear. I hope his family receives justice.

Never did such a stupid thing as this kid. Always eyes around my head while on a bike. I survived. On the other hand as a driver I stay away as much as possible from any pedestrians and bikers, children especially. This kind of behavior is something every driver should expect from a kid on a bike. And this looks like a local neighborhood street, so come on.

The poor kid crossed into the van’s way without looking back. Had the driver stopped, he could have saved his life and video would show that he wasn’t at fault. But he chose to keep driving, instead. Now he is a careless murderer.

Just a fun fact: most bicycle fatalities occur during DAYLIGHT hours, with or without a bike helmet. Been riding bikes and e bikes on and off in NYC for 60 yrs, your actually safer between the early hrs of the morning.

OMG!!!! The only movement of the van driver is to stop immediately when the boy crossed in front of him, He would not have hit him. I blame the video game industry. It has been so expensive to game these days, and because of that, more kids are out and about on dangerous streets looking for something to do. If them can afford to stay home and game, this wouldnt had happened.
