Teen Titans #27-28 - Atop the Fourth Wall

The Geoff Johns era of the Titans has one of my favorite panels ever It's when Superboy learns that he's not only a clone of Superman, but Lex Luthor (I know, just roll with it), and he learns it by it showing a picture of Lex on his computer... And the picture is this smugass photo of Lex just mugging to the camera like it's for his dating profile. It's just hilarious.

Like the last panel would have been sweet if drawn better: Raven is emotionally exhausted and traumatized. Wonder Girl wants to make sure she is ok. So they stay with each other to make sure things are alright. This would have been cute. Too bad Liefeld doesn’t know how to actually do cute.

To quote the YoungBlood #8 review Ahem... "Rob Liefeld! We don't know why he still gets work either!" Really speaks to me

It's sad to see how Liefeld's art degraded so early on. Back in 1988, his Hawk and Dove stuff was really good! The art was top-notch, people looked like people, guns looked like guns, it was all really good! Too bad he fell so far so early on.

Just saying, it makes a lot of sense that Robin would be thinking about how much he misses his dad a bunch on Father's Day. Hell, my dad died more than 2 years ago, I'm in my 30s, and I still think about how much I miss him pretty often, especially around Father's Day, his birthday, and the anniversary of his death. Losing a parent's really rough, and Tim's still a teenager at this point.

DC Comics: Death is but a door, time is but a window... and we left both of them open That was a good one. How about DC Comics: Where any and all kinks are fair game for a story! Though comics aren't quite as self-indulgent in that aspect as they once were.:P

I remember a fanfic where Raven and another girl Titan sitting in the dark did in fact lead to adult situations. Cartoon version of the team, so Starfire. It was one of those rare gems that actually took time to strike an emotional chord, paid attention to characterization, and had only the one steamy scene at the end which wasn't that explicit. Wish I could remember the author's name, they had some good stuff.

The thing with Holly is she literally came out of nowhere, like Black Lightning's kids. Dawn had no siblings and her parents were together in the previous Hawk & Dove series. Suddenly she has a sister with and there was some sort of Parent Trap backstory.

Okay I'll admit this, I'm about 13 minutes in and Rob's artwork is actually decent here, for a 3$-ish comic I'd take it. You can absolutely see the flaws, but if you go back and look at any part of Young Blood they aren't nearly as apparent.

Gail Simone and Greg Rucka are the two writers that got me into comics.

Those Hawk & Dove pics at the start don't look bad at all. Wow, some quality art from Liefeld

You know if an artist in your company is so hated that you have to pair him up with your most beloved writers to minimize the outrage..... maybe you shouldn’t keep giving him work?

I've gotta give credit where credit is due. Liefeld's art has gotten significantly better over the years. I mean, look at those proportions. Granted, they can't be achieved without plastic surgery, but they ARE achievable. That is a huge leap forward for him. And some of those characters actually have feet!

i6:55 Geoff Johns did that in JSA. One of his down time issues was fathers day from the perspective of Rick Tyler and Jakeem who both had tough relationships with their fathers. Rick's dad was the first Housman who died in Zero hour and Jakeem never met his dad. It's one of my favorite issues from the run

Here's a challenge for you: an entire month dedicated to good Rob Liefeld comics.

Plastic Man had a 6 issue mini-series that Simone wrote not too long ago, but post-New 52. While it started great and Gail is perfect for writing Plastic Man's dialogue, the second half of the series completely lost the plot while the rest was phoned. I totally recommend reading if you like complete and utter disappointment for character, plot and resolution of any kind.

I'm honestly surprised that Liefeld keeps getting work as an artist for comics, when his art has barely improved. On the upside, at least he's not afraid to draw feet like at the beginning.

The fact you made a smack at Fallout 76, though already been done to death, made me so happy (like how you're passionate about comics, I'm equally passionate about the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, which are basically being beaten up inside of a bag by Bethesda at this point). On a side-note; the first DC comic I read was a trade of Gail Simone's Birds of Prey, and I met her at London MCM.

In the Hawk & Dove 28 issue series that happened after Liefeld's mini, the final story with Kestrel had Hawk absorb the Kestrel spell (Which could have been turned into justification for what happened to Hank Hall later if DC was smarter about it) and it was explicitly said that Kestrel was gone forever because of this. Then again, said series also had Dove at one point clearly mention via thought bubble that she was an only child, so what can you do?

To be fair to the revolving door of death in DC, the main personification of Death Death of the endless aka Didi (apparently?) Is incredibly busy. And she honestly thought that during Blackest Night, that everyone was having fun. That and the many and varied personifications of death kinda loose jurisdiction once souls go to a designated afterlife of which there are several. This has been 'trivia that has little to do with the comic itself but I thought was nifty.'

Did Liefeld just not know what Tim’s costume looked like? It looks like he just took the classic cape and tunic, colored the outside of the cape black, and gave him green pants after he realized he wasn’t supposed to draw a Dick Grayson Robin.

I was tickled by Kid Flash doing 10 Pin Throwing. His overarm technique is rather novel.

Were these issues never collected into trade? I've read a lot of the Geoff Johns Teen Titans books as graphic novels, and I honestly cannot remember ever reading these issues. I know I've read up to One Year Later. Also, I recommend the three or four issues Liefeld did for the New 52 Deathstroke series. That should be worth an episode.

I was hoping you'd cover these issues. They are painful and poor Gail Simone comes out the worse for the wear. The problem too is that it also marks the decline of the title as Johns began to seem less interested to the point where about a year later he'd bow out in the middle of a storyline. The rest of the series really suffered from one lackluster creative team to another until the final team, which was doing great, but ended abruptly to make way for the New 52.

I personally like the idea of a male Hawk and female Dove. It helps the duality they represent.

Funny a few weeks ago my friend posted a cover for Youngblood he really liked on facebook and he left Rob's name off when crediting the people who worked on it. He actually somehow found this post and corrected us, in a surreal and kind of cool moment. I mean I'm a professional comic book writer, but this was just wow. Also it inspired this conversation at the company I work for: "So Rob Liefeld stopped by to correct a friend's post, I have no idea how to respond." "I don't think it warrants a response. He was just stopping by to correct something." "No, I mean, I don't know how to process this. That a major comic book celebrity found a post that barely anybody saw and stopped by just to tell us he worked on it. I expected a lot of things to happen today, this wasn't one of them."

Agreed about the Antimatter Grenades. In fact, long ago in an X-Men forum rpg, I had a character who's power was pretty similar. He decided that Magneto was right and eventually ended up dying. If a guy in a superhero world says he can create antimatter, I'd take it as a credible threat.

It sounds like Gail Simone didn't know what she was trying to accomplish. She knew that she wanted to say something about family. But what exactly that is remains vague and mysterious.

Richard Branson said to surround yourself with people smarter than you as a sure way to success, Liefeld took an altered approach when he was up and coming by surrounding himself with people that have talent, and keeps a job by becoming friends with those people who would later become modern shot callers of the industry, they'll always throw him a bone

Awww -- I guess even Gail has off days. Though I'm with you that exploring the Titans' various family issues while bowling would have been a lot more interesting -- a good sort of "breather issue." Hell, maybe you could even keep Christina and Aja pulling off their crime and have them claim "daddy issues," only for the heroes to shoot that down as a dumb excuse. (And it is just me, or was anyone else expecting Christina to be a new look for Duela Dent? The girl who seems to be the kid of some of Batman's most iconic villains would have been a good person to bring back for this!) ...Also I kind of liked Beast Boy's stupid "Jurassic" joke. Sue me. :P

I know at least Dr. Fate is one of the lords of order as the helmet turns the wearer into Nabu or something. Not entirely sure how it exactly works, only that it's hard to remove the helmet and people tend to be hesitant to put it on, let alone put it _back_ on.

Well if death is but a door and time is a window i guess Hawk and Dove are those birds that keep slamming against the crystal, usually because birds cant compute the concept of "Trasparent objects" but in this case because DC keeps closing it at the last minute.
