Teenage Engineering OP-Z video synth hands-on - NAMM 2017

Teenage Engineering had two forthcoming products to show off at NAMM 2017: its tiny PO-32 Tonic drum machine and the OP-Z, a "video synth" that generates visuals as well as sound.
The OP-Z was on display at NAMM 2016 in prototype form, but this year Teenage Engineering was able to show more of the synth's unique features, including its tape looper and graphics sequencing capabilities.
FACT spoke to OP-Z lead software engineer Jonas Åberg at NAMM to find out more and get a better look at what promises to be even more popular than its portable OP-1 synthesizer.

Too many people don't get it. It's not meant to be an upgrade or downgrade from the OP-1. It's simply a different direction. TE has got to be one of the strangest companies for this kind of thing and I LOVE IT. I've long coveted for the OP-1, but when this comes out, my rig won't have merely another synth. My rig will have a visual art show.

Are you people kidding me? This is insane what all they just packed with this! DMX control?? Building a framework for controllable custom 3D graphics?? They definitely took the idea of a sequencer to fking Pluto. Crazy.

What some people have to understand is stop trying to figure out the methodology of TE and their products. I am willing to bet this OP-Z will win the hearts of DJs and producers alike from the first try. I was sceptic to buy the OP-1 based on looks, now I can't keep my hands off the damn thing!

I don't like the fact it's dependant on a screen. The great thing about OP-1 is the portability. Yes, this one is way smaller but you still need a screen. It would be an inconvenience if you had it on your lap while sitting on a train or airplane. Still a neat device though, I hope it does well.

Is anyone worried that they won’t be able to make keyboard loops on the board? Like there aren’t keys to play so am I going to have to put samples in? Making it almost useless in travel or is there going to be a simple solution to this issue?

personally am not a big fan of iPad necessity. can it work with Android at least? can I run it on a computer? I mean I know it's powerful.. but at least with an LCD screen it wasn't all clumsy like... Cables people, lots of them, chunky adapters.. no please... if it's Much cheaper than the op1 then I'll consider '

Crowbartender yeah I've purchased a po-20 arcade, being intended as a gimmick, but I've played the hell out of it for the past week, then again it's my first synth with physical buttons.
