@@ezekielswiss5956 in their defense their the only manufacturer i know of that makes repair parts easily accessible for 3rd party repair (parts not that expensive) long term that could be a game changer for other small businessess. (right-to-repair), and another thing is that the designs are timeless and build quality decent. I could see person getting 20 years out of 0P-1 easy.

I'm sure they're well built. But well designed? That depends on if your priority is looking cool or getting good results. If the latter, buy something more cost effective to achieve the same results and invest the $1000 you've saved into professional recording equipment.

It would have made more sense for teenage engineering to make a washing machine with a built in sampler than whatever the hell this thing is. It’s cool, but who the is it for? Especially at that insane price point. I feel like teenage engineering is becoming the apple of audio production devices.

Being an OP-1/OP-1 field owner, this is targeted to me precisely. And I love all the features, as well as the beautiful design including the rotating platter. But have to admit, it’s just way over priced - and yes this is coming from someone who bought the overpriced OP-1 series twice. But while the OP-1’s are completely in a market of their own, the TP-7 competes with many alternatives. As much as I lust for a TP-7, I’ll probably get a Zoom recorder instead. I think the TP-7 should really be priced no more than $500 max which includes the cool tax.

I had a Zoom recorder and now have a Zoom mixer recorder and they are garbage! So many issues and the Teenage Engineering just works and top quality in spite of higher price. After having amazing time with using my TX-6 and OB-4 to jam and record tracks it is the portable studio. My synths are in different rooms so having a portable way to record stems from each room of gear is key so that I can import the stems into my DAW and remaster/remix to songs. Easier than dragging laptop to each room and messing with audio interface.

Still waiting for a review of the multi-track recording including "overdubbing" but on the additional tracks. For example I record some guitar, then on another track some bass, etc. The manual explains it somewhat but I really want to see it in action.

How does the file playback work when it comes to file system? Can I use it as a music player? I think this could really take off as a music device too, just like you can listen to tapes on a tape recorder.

Definitely! Even though yes you can record audio on your iphone this thing is too groovy to pass up. Definitely going to use it as a cool recorder for coming up with demos on guitar or piano.

it's a compact, well built product that's for very few people that want something specific for a purpose. podcasters that go into the woods would love the tp-7 and cm-15 mic, they're compact, and advertised for the purpose. but the every day joe wouldn't buy this thing because the everyday joe doesn't need this thing.

sadly a common practice with teenage engineering, their products are geared towards established artists who already have the big bucks to spend on this fancy equipment. i've had my eyes on the OP-1 for about 4 years now but can never pull the trigger.

Hi Andrew! Mostly the CM-15 except when I demonstrate the memo function at 6.12 I thought the quality was very impressive for such a tiny microphone.

Nagra SD is under $1000 and records stereo. This would require 2 mics and would cost over $5000. What am I missing?

Just trying to find out, but nobody adresses this: can I use it as a Looper? Can the record-arm button be used as automatic input detection, for example when I play the first chord on my guitar? Can the recorded sound be played back in a loop? Maybe you can try this, thank you.

I really like the concept. I just can't justify the $1,500 price tag. You would think it would come with 32-bit capabilities or something "next level." This is just a recorder. Is the audio quality that much better than lets say... Tascam X8 that retails for $800? Can I record better audio than the less expensive SoundDevice mixpre series?

It’s portable, it’s unique (though seems like that’s not something you care for, which is totally cool!), it’s an audio interface, it works seamlessly with iOS devices, and it is very well designed. You can’t argue that last point. If it’s too pricey, don’t buy it. No big deal dude! It’s pricey bc it’s not for the masses and for specific use cases and also because it’s a gorgeous toy. The TX-6 mixer is also not overpriced IMO because of the extensive additional capabilities besides just being a tiny mixer. The OP-1f however, I do not feel *that* price can be justified at ALL.

Does the tb-7 have live pitch/tempo adjust? Otherwise i dont see this being more handy of a tool for "portable djing" than say 2 cd players

It's pretty, but the rocker and spinning disc seem to be unnecessary shiny objects that will be the first things to break.

Definitely see where you're coming from. But if you're shopping for a Tesla you probably won't consider a 90's Jeep Cherokee. TE has pretty much set themselves up as a "luxury" design brand with a general focus on music gear. To me, it is what it is and they are what they are. 🤷‍♂️

Can you connect a Sennheiser ME 66 xlr mic to this? Or will the battery damage the tp7?

These products will not accept an XLR connection or provide phantom power. The microphone's battery power will not effect the teenage engineering product, but an audio adapter to 1/4" or 1/8" would be required along with an impedance -matching adapter like this one: Kopul LMT100 - Low to High Impedance Matching Transformer (1.5') B&H # KOLMT100: bhpho.to/40u9t6t >Mark

I love my OP-1, TX-6 and OB-4 and pocket operators. Up there with Elektron gear in quality and portable. Looking at the TP-7 and microphone but will hard pass on the expensive folding desk.

Tx6 and tp7 make it 3 stereo track recorder or 6 mono . then you have your home 😂studio with op1-field for 2 stereo, Op-Z and the new mic. Everything on battery ( field) . you got the best of the century system and the design of all these incredible specialist box push your creativity. we are in a nomad century, a pocket device century and teenage understand everything. add the OB4 as speaker and you nail the perfect system

The teenage engineering TP-7 Digital Tape Recorder is purpose-built as a recorder, rather than as a mixer, audio interface, and recorder like the TX-6. Its main defining feature is the motorized "tape reel," which allows live tactile control over recordings. You can increase speed, reverse, stop, or even scratch with the wheel. Another unique feature is the "Memo" button, which can be held down to create short recordings even when the TP-7 is powered off.

Everything about this is exciting but while the mechanical/analog controls are fun and convenient they don't inspire a lot of confidence in terms of longevity, something to consider for such an expensive gadget.

Being into tech and new gadgets is no indicator of content or lack thereof, it just means one likes novel tech. But good for you if you're not into new toys, all the better for your wallet.

Thing is . . . audio uses nowhere near as much memory as - for example - video, so 128GB is a lot of memory in this context . . .128GB will give you 134 hours @ 44.1kHz / 24bit / 2TRK stereo . . .or 201 hours @ 44.1kHz / 16bit / 2TRK stereo (more than 8 days !) . . . even at 96kHz / 24bit / 2TRK stereo you can still store 62 hours of audio. Sure 1TB would be cool, but would cost more and it's probably not needed, just think if you were recording a mono track at 44.1khz/16bit, then 1TB would give you 3149 hours of recording (~131 days or just over 4 months!)

this seem like such a strange device to me. I don't know who the target audience actually is. it doesn't seem all that practical for just taking memos (due to the price and the fact that any smart phone can already do this) so is it more for multi track recording? I think the tx-6 plus a smart phone is way more powerful and even more convenient so I'm not sure about that either.

If it’s not for you, it’s not for you. A phone (+an app and/or an adapter) can do a lot! But that doesn’t mean there’s no purpose for a separate high quality dedicated device. It’s similar to someone buying a flashlight or a camera or a calculator and then someone complaining about how “A phone can do those things”

"It spins when TP7 is recording and playing audio". That sounds impractical. How will that interact with other objects in my pocket; would it scratch, say, if I have it in my jacket pocket with my keys in there? Would it snag on items in my laptop bag and cause damage to itself or pother items? Why doesn't it come with stereo in built condenser mics like the Zoom Handy hn4 which is $100 and has as high recording specs and far more features? I don't know any serious audio professional who would waste money on this and I'd personally be crazy embarrassed to own one.

@@BandH i did get a refund and they discontinued the product, then to my surprise they listed them as USED 10 good as new for more than double what i paid. I spoke to Denon so they are aware they said they dont sell this product no more. i hope they cleaned them properly and are not going to let that disgusting mold blow in someone elses ear.

I would caution anyone purchasing from them online. Purchased an ssd from them, and mailed it a basic bubble wrap envelope. No padding, no peanuts. Sister ordered a pricy camera, and it just came in a box with no padding. Not to mention the two day window for declaring an item came damaged.
