THIS, this is what I think should be the standard for collections of old games like this, truly showing love and care for the legacy of these games and adding so much more than the games themselves. Such an amazing collection!
Funny how he mentioned Capcom should take notes. Capcom actually had Digital Eclipse (who worked on this compilation) make the Disney Afternoon Collection a while back. This is practically the same but ON STEROIDS.

I love this collection. I've never been happier to have my own childhood neatly packaged and sold back to me. My one minor quibble would be the lack of compatibility with the NSO classic controllers. Like 3D All-Stars, I hope that gets patched in at some point. Otherwise... [chef kiss].

I'm glad the turtles are getting more time in the spotlight.. definitely my favorite cartoon , toys and video games from my childhood.. with the release of shredders revenge and this release we got the best collection of retro games ever created in my opinion and I had to throw shredders revenge in because it obviously uses the old catalog as inspiration and has to be seen as a spiritual successor in the series.. sad they couldn't add the turtles in time re-shelled Remake from the xbox 360 to really give every version possible but it's really hard to complain with the content provided this year.. Hopefully the castlevania collections and the turtle collections will spark a ! Over the head of some vp or ceo at Konami to give us a definitive Metal Gear collection Bigger than the xbox 360 and ps3 versions
I agree with you there. They should release the Metal Gear Solid collection that comes with the following. Metal Gear Solid Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

That arcade version got released on PSN and Xbox store for a few years and got delisted along with my other favorite, X-Men arcade. Same company owns it all now so why not just put it together in some kind of compilation? 🤷

Great collection, but I did have similar issues when trying to play online. 2 player was really laggy, if 4 players got in, it would screech to a halt and even crash. Seems like they did an update, but still having issues online. Kinda weird cause Shredder's Revenge runs flawlessly (mostly) even with 6 players, so hoping they can resolve the issues. Also, when playing the network versions, it's stuck on the default display size. Is there a way to change that? Other than those 2 issues, been really loving the collection.
I likewise couldn't find a way to change the display settings in online mode. Like WTF? Really irks me that I can't switch the screen size to full. Great collection overall and I am so grateful that we finally have it after many years of these classic games being stuck in the vault due to licensing issues, but the online mode needs more work for sure.
Keep in mind the developers of this collection are not the same team who worked on shredder's revenge. So the ones responsible for the online play are a completely different team. Do hope they patch out the issues though.
Glad I picked up my copy right away. Now if only the Single Player TMNT game for the NES had a god mode! That game is still hard even with the ability to rewind gameplay and avoid getting hit.

The only thing I wish they would add is another filter that is warm and slightly blurred like on an old T.V ( like the filter used in the video play back filter of the interactive strategy guide in this game). I am not a fan of any of the filters (including the no filter option) which makes things look over pixilated; unless you use the smallest screen size option. The variety of screen filter options is the one thing Capcom gets right in their compilations; which this one could use.
I think that's possible. I remember playing the game around 7 PM last night. I put my switch down and ate dinner. When I turned on my switch 2 hours later, the game had it's first update. So it's possible for that to be added down the road

You think Manhattan Project is the weakest NES game? Gonna have to strongly disagree there, I'd say it is easily the best one as it's more refined and original than the second. Turtles in Time is the G.O.A.T. and the one that is recommended for every Turtles fan alive, both the arcade and SNES versions. Plus, Radical Rescue for the Game Boy is certainly a hidden gem. This is a really cool collection that should not be missed!
Hey there, can you stretch the screen to full screen or nah? I definitely don’t wanna play with the screen that small even if it means artificially stretching it.

what's your guys opinion on the small screen size for the original display? I was expecting the original screen size to be a lil bigger like in the Mega Man collection. I know you can enlarge to 'full' and 'wide' but the downside is that part of the screen esp. at the top gets cut off. Obviously was expecting the games to be full screen, just not a really small full screen
Really enjoyed the video! However, there seems to be a minor issue with it. When the score for the game is meant to be showed, I don't think anything shows up; it's just a long grey bar. Fantastic job otherwise!

"Offering comprehensive content that doesn't hide anything behind a paywall" VERY nice and VERY subtle jab at Sega & Sonic Origins there!! But yeah, I'm definitely gonna have to get this. I've been preparing myself by playing the Virtual Console versions of TMNT 1-4 and TMNT 1 GB. And y'know what? In TMNT 1 for me, stage 4 is still the roughest; certain tunnels from number 12 or 13 have fire "rivers" that *WILL* INSTANTLY kill you. Worse yet, tunnel 17 has a three screen drop section where two of'em have spiked walls coming for you...and those are insta-kill as well. Stage 6 is second roughest just because some of the enemies here are insane. Nevermind Donatello. You need to have loaded EVERRYONE up with 99 Scrolls from way back in stage 3!!
This is basicaly sonic mega collection but for ninja turtles i wish every companie would put everything possible into a compilation like they used too.

While I very much agree with your review, I do have to take issue with one comment… the one about Capcom’s retro releases. I agree that some have left us wanting, but I have loved the Street Fighter Collection, Beat ‘em Up Collection, Fighting Game Collection, and the MegaMan Collections. There has been plenty of “bang for your buck” value in each of those. Plus, there are a ton of classics to choose from. Most have released at $39.99 and are often on sale on Nintendo’s e-Shop. While I agree the net code could use some tweaking in Street Fighter Collection, the Fighting Game Collection has been a blast for me. Cowabunga Collection is incredible, but I have no complaints with Capcom’s classic compilations. Capcom has a lot of classic fun and art packed into most of their collections and I really enjoy what they have had on offer. That’s just me, I guess.

I noticed that I'm having some frame issues where sprites completely disappear yet still exist (they can still hit and be hit after they've flashed from view)... I only noticed that issue on the arcade version of "turtles in time"... maybe it's a setting issue for me, but it made the first few levels almost unplayable at times, other times it ran FLAWLESSLY... hope its just a patch fix, I can't wait to relive my arcade childhood experiences...
I believe the issue you're having with the flickering sprites can be easily fixed... there is a toggle in the settings menu which turns the "flickering" issue on/off.

Honestly... As a TMNT fan I want to get he game if for nothing else than it being a big part of Cowabunga history in one neat package. ...But that said I don't feel like it warrants its current price tag for me. I mean, it's not bad, but just more than I care to pay for it, basically. Kinda hoping it wont sell-out before November so I can hopefully get it from a black-friday sale, or from some other sale before that. As said, I really, REALLY want the game, but not without sale, basically.
I just bought this and I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, that this is probably one of the best collections of old school games ever made. The only way I could’ve seen them upping the ante is by maybe including the GBA games.
My only complaint I have is you can't use separate joycons for 2 to 4 players locally that sucks it forces you to use 2 joycons for each player or a pro controller im disappointed
Turtles 3 was my game growing up. Then my cousin got turtles in time and said we weren't gonna sleep until we beat the whole game. It was a long weekend and one of the best memories of my childhood. Now my kids are gonna run the same gauntlet.
To quote Violet Berlin from 90's Children's ITV video game review show Bad Influence on TMNT Tournament Fighters "The Mega Drive boys look slightly tougher". There you go, some defence for a Sega port on a Nintendo channel. ;)
I wouldn’t exactly say Capcom take notes I think Capcom did a great job with the Megaman collections. Would’ve only been better if there were more on one cart.
And Digital Eclipse worked with Capcom on the Disney Afternoon collection. The only thing that was missing was some of the extra goodies like a game guides and images from the actual shows

The fact that in the arcade games you can select your character is a selling point for me. Having to play as Leonardo on mame unless you reprogrammed the button inputs for each character every single time wasn't ideal. But when the original was released on the xbox 360 you could change after every continue like Alien vs Predator. Is that something you can do here or can you only select once at the start of the game?

This is not very true. You can play TMNT arcade (on MAME) with selectable characters , you must found different region for example Oceania , its set up to two players only (due to limitation of the arcade cabinet) and you have character selection screen.
I am looking everywhere to see how to do this and I cannot find it with this collection. It is ridiculous to have so many options but something crucial like player select after dying is missing????
Will likely be fixed with a patch or two - but, it's still pretty bad that the online play is in such a poor state at launch. Hyperstone Heist is the only one that works seamlessly with another player online. Turtles in Time arcade (arguably the biggest selling point here) drags with a third player and absolutely tanks when a fourth player enters the game. Also - and this is a side criticism for me - have DE given any particular reason WHY they couldn't have given Turtles in Time SNES, TMNT 2 NES, and The Manhattan Project 2 player online co-op? All three titles are more popular than friggin' Hyperstone Heist, so why does that one get online play? Seems like a pretty big oversight. There was clearly a lot of love and care for the franchise/classic konami put into the package. But I think improvements can and should be made. There's a lot to love here, and all the games (yes even Turtles 1 on NES) are still great and it feels right for them to be on the Switch.
I was expecting a near flawless online experience with this much hyped rollback netcode. It has been such a disappointment. They dropped one update already last night which helped a little, but its still far from good.

IGN's review states that despite rollback netcode, the online experience is horrendous? That seems contradictory to your experience, so I'm wondering what might be going on.
hearing the music/voices were altered from the originals and the online multiplayer issues (and what's Genesis Tournament fighters and TMNT4 SNES lacking online play?) made me hesitate. I already own these games in their original forms already (and can play them on emulation if I want to get the extra features - like disabling flickering and slowdown on the nes). $150 for the historical stuff seems a bit much (though I prefer physical media). I have no nostalgia for the gameboy titles so maybe not, unless they fix the issues and it goes on sale... and no dip switches for difficulty in arcades? man.. maybe they'll patch these things in??? we can only hope
Now I just need them to remake mgs3 with the online modes. That is the game that convinced me to buy broadband internet for my apartment and start online gaming. Socom 2 was my second online game.

Does this make up for the Silent Hills fiasco? Barely, but it's a fair start towards getting back the credibility that Konami corporate of Japan destroyed several years ago. The recent Contra and Castlevania compilations in tandem with the Limited Run Games physical launch label is a confident move to regain the enthusiasm of the fans. With the recent announcement of three Silent Hill titles being worked on now, especially a traditional Japan-based title in development, perhaps Konami's corporate culture is trying to restart the PR in a positive manner. I feel confident that Konami has gotten the point, and I look forward to what the company has in store for the future of the Silent Hill and MGS series. Konami regained my trusts with the TMNT Cowabunga Collection. Digital Eclipse/Backbone Entertainment have amazed me with the quality of the emulation and tight control support. My wish for a Legend of the Mystical Ninja Goemon Collection might be a cynical wish, yet I can be enthused about the possibility now. Excellent compilation, and perhaps a neo SNES/SFC collection with AxeLay, Assualt Suit Valken (Cybernator), Legend of the Mystical Ninja, and Gradius III is in order then??? :v ~ "Konami is Back!!"

How to set full screen w/o borders + scanlines on online multiplayer on Switch? Others also experiencing extreme lag sometimes online? It's like SF 30th anniversary collection all over again...
I can safely say, had I played the actual arcade versions of some of these games, I'd despise them today. It seems arcade games were designed in such a way that you would be forced to dump coins into the machine nonstop, or just cut your losses. The difficulty is hardcore to the point of non enjoyable. Sure you can press the + button until you have more lives than reasonable, but it doesn't change the fact you'll die upwards of a hundred times. I definitely prefer the console versions. They don't seem as unfair in difficulty but there's still a lot of skill needed here, and thank God for save states. Without them I'd still be that kid that never beat TMNT 2, or Turtles in Time. Maybe it's just a lack of skill on my part, even having played games for 30+ years, or maybe they're actually just that hard, either way it makes it hard to fully enjoy this collection. I didn't have this much trouble with Shredders Revenge so I expected to fall right into this with ease. I'm still happy with my purchase for sure, but there could've been more options to adjust the difficulty for those of us that just want to experience the games without the headache.
Thanks for the reviews, I preordered this collection and all I have to do is go pick it up. However, I do have a quick question... where are the PS2 versions of TMNT beat-em up games on this? Why were they not included in this collection? That is somewhat BS.... They should have included all the TMNT ( fighting and beat em up games from PS2) on this collection.
@@ICEMAN595 I just looked it up and them games were very well indeed made by Konami! I still am questioning to why they were not included on here... That is complete BS. I'm sorry for my repeated ranting, but them were also my favorites and really enjoyed playing them back in the days around the time of the TMNT 2003 cartoon series because the PS2 TMNT games were based upon the TMNT 2003 cartoons such as characters and storyline. We got ripped off 4 games ( ps2 versions) from this collection. I might have to write into Konami
how cool would it have been if they had added 4 player ability to Hyperstone Heist genesis and TMNT IV snes? a missed opportunity. so many other things had they gone the extra mile...

The THEME SONG IS DIFFERENT! On the Arcade, they seemingly re-recorded the intro song... WHY DID THEY DO THIS, I have no idea... But it doesn't sound as good as the original. There's sound effects missing, it's slightly slowed down, too much vocal separation between the singers, and additional reverb on the "heroes in a half shell" part that had the "fly" type effect to it.... Overall it's all worse because the original theme recording is perfection incarnate. It's like 9.5 / 10 compared to the original, but it's still annoying nonetheless. There was no reason to have this be different. I went back to the original arcade game just to make sure that there wasn't something different in that vs the actual cartoon opening -- there isn't. The original arcade version had a bonafide exact replica of the first 10 seconds of the cartoon intro... It irks me every time I hear it now in this collection.

Ok, so Konami stated that only the snes tournament fighters has rollback netcode..... so this review is misleading... and relatively late, so there's not a great excuse.

Yeah, mine does that buffering behavior. Not a big deal, but kinda wish they had kept the original theme on the 89 arcade (not that the remix sounds bad).
