I signed up and completed the 120-hour tefl online pro course, which I highly recommend because of the great reviews and support that is offered throughout the course. Feedback was immediate, and my tutor Paul was so helpful and professional in every way. I am so excited about completing the course successfully. I know that the lessons I learned will be invaluable in my teaching career.
That was outstandingly presented and incredibly useful. Thanks very much. Now I can only hope I have the same wonderful teachers it sounds like you had.
I just did my TEFL org classroom course this past weekend. Your summary is great and I felt like you when I saw the chairs and no tables, but it was honestly the best way, and a lot of fun to learn. I was the only person in my group over the age of 30 (by a couple of decades) apart from the tutor, but I still felt at ease and had a great time. My confidence is massively boosted from this classroom course.
This was really interesting - a few of my friends have done TEFL courses but I didn't really know what it was or what was involved. It sounds really good :) x
Hello Katie. TEFL was recommended to me by a friend, i laughed at first because i have never taught anyone anything, but i do have a real passion for travelling and sharing experiences with all i meet from all over. Your video has just injected me with confidence to go for it, so thank you very much for taking the time to make it. I just hope that the fact i have an HND and not a degree won't hinder me (Do they check it? haha!) I now have no doubt that this is what i want to do, thanks again for making me believe i can do it. All the best, Alan.
Thanks Alan! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you manage to find the job you want! Depending on the jobs you apply for, they don't always need degrees so it's definitely still worth applying for stuff. Good luck!
@@KatieRuby That's excellent, thanks so much for your quick reply Katie, I've had a look on the .org website you recommended, also i had a look at a couple of others which say they "Guarantee a job" at the end. If you were in my position with absolutely no idea what your're doing with applying, would you stick with the .org one you did or go for the one that guarantees a job afterwards?
@@alanm794it's completely up to you really. Some people do a course where they learn TEFL in the country they want to teach, for example theres a programme in Vietnam, you do the training and then get a job once you're done. The only thing to watch out for is dodgy companies that might offer you jobs when there aren't any. If you stick to respectable companies/websites - you won't go far wrong :) but generally it's easy enough to look and apply for jobs after getting your certificate. I'm going to hopefully upload a short video in the future with a list of recommended companies to work with so keep your eyes open for that.
Such an informative video, thank you!! Did you pay for the 120 hour online course and then pay for the in person classroom weekend course separately at a random time that suited you?
I'm looking into doing a tefl course so this was really interesting for me. How did you find the planning and teaching a lesson? I'd find that really nerve wracking 😕
In terms of an actual teaching job, it completely depends on the country you're going to. Some you may have to completely plan your own lessons, some you may just follow the structure of a text book so it's really varied. In terms of planning and delivering the lesson during the tefl weekend course, it was explained really well. We were given complete freedom and the guy observing us obviously knew we were still learning and was really forgiving. He gave us really useful feedback and it seemed to me, it was less about the lesson delivery (how affective can you be when you are teaching in a group rather than alone?) it was more about your enthusiasm and energy. I am very shy and introverted so if I can do it, anybody can ;)
Hey Katie, thanks for sharing your experience I liked your crazy-Katie moment :) I planning to go to China as part of one the programs of my university but my native language is Spanish you think this could be a Barrier? Thank you !
Most companies do look for fluent English but as long as you're comfortable with the language you're teaching, I see no reason why it should be a barrier!
Hello Katie, thanks for sharing all this info. I'd like to ask you if you've kept having a good experience applying for jobs with the TEFL certification from tefl.org.uk? How were you convinced about doing the course with them? Is there a way to check their accreditations somewhere? I'd be extremely grateful if you could help me out with this, since I've gone a little mad looking into different courses and am not near to getting anywhere. Thanks!
My applications have been successful, I think if you have a degree and a tefl certificate, you are pretty much guaranteed a job at the end of it! I did a course with them because my friend had done one as well, so it was recommended to me by someone I trusted. I'm sure if you visit the website, you can find all their reviews and things! There's so many options when it comes to tefl though, companies like English First is another great one to look into!
Katie thank you! In my personal experience, I was (and still am) a very shy person but doing Tefl made me a lot more confident. Speaking in public was once really hard and stressful, but now it's something I do everyday and don't think about! If that's all that's stopping you, then try and get out of your comfort zone and just go for it! :)
I can't remember getting marked, at least not seriously. The teacher just judges if you are teaching well and your good points and what you can improve on. If you do well, you get a reference from the teacher though which is worth having.
I watched this before my classroom course at the beginning of November and funnily enough I had the exact same tutor (Steve) as you did. Did he tell you the story about inserting the 2 euros in the trolley 😂
Hello Please I want to know when I get my BA in English literature in Morocco and get tefl certification as well. Which country do you advice me to teach in???
The amount of hours basically determines how much experience you get. Most teaching jobs will look for at least 120 hours just because then you have had a thorough course on how to control the classroom, games etc. I did 120 hours which was 100 hours online and 20 in the classroom. While the 20 in the classroom wa spretty bang on, I must admit I did my online course a lot quicker than 100 hours (I suppose they just put that down as a rough time estimate) but really it's whatever suits you.
Hi, nice video and informative. Hi, I like your videos they are quite thought provoking. I recently got accepted on the CELTA in London but I pulled out as I just cant understand why its necessary to have your 12 teacher trainers and your teachers scrutinising your every move as you teach a class and I couldn't sleep for days and getting panicky about it. I've directed choirs and things so its not standing in front of people its being scrutinised and analysed that I hate. I've read online that schools much prefer the CELTA over TEFL because of the teaching practice as part of the course. In your experience how have you found it?
Hello, I was just wondering how soon after completing the TEFL course you were able to find employment? Were there other people of a similar age/background in the same region teaching English too? Also, how long did you stay in one job for? Thanks!!
I got my job teaching about three months after getting my certificate but really you can start looking and applying for jobs while studying/as soon as you get your certificate. I stayed at my job for six months but generally tefl jobs are around a year long depending on where you go. Mine was only an internship so it wasn't as long but high paid jobs in Asia or areas like that are usually a year contract.
Hello , I’m going to get TEFL certification , and English is my second language , I would like to do that on line , what organization you would recommend to ? Thanks
Hi, Katie. Great video. I have been teaching english for more than two years now in India and I am planning to take a TEFL certification online soon. What are the chances of an Indian landing this job and where? Thank you.
@@easyandhappylife251 no. Not yet. M teaching in my own country, India for now. I completed my course in May 2020 so the lockdowns happened n I could never apply
hey thanks for the informative video. can i ask if there is many assignments involved with the 120 hour with classroom combined? would i have to write lenghty essays or a thesis thank you.
There are a few quizzes and essays involved in the online part of the course. They are simple and quite short when it comes to word counts so it's easy to pass.
Mine is half way through, on unit 6, and took me 4 weeks...but that is going at it in the evenings after work and all day on days off. Hard work but good revision about the English language
Would you recommend doing the online learning? It states online that 'most employers look for people who have at least 120 hours of TEFL training with an accredited TEFL provider.' Based on your experience is this true?
Some employers are okay with less hours but particularly Asian countries usually look for at least 120 hours :) Some like you to have online and classroom experience so I think it's worth signing up for the online course and the classroom combined.
Is it surely I will get a job after doing this course?? How do u manage to teach English suppose in China how you demonstrate them ? Is it fun life or hard boring life
It depends on where you want to teach. A lot of countries (particularly in Asia) like their teachers to have a degree but it isn't always a requirement.
I hear Korea is strict and competitive and some schools require TEFL with classroom. I'm looking more at Vietnam or Thailand, I hear TELF isn't always required but it's preferred. My degrees isn't necessarily related to teaching but I hope they at least get be noticed. Bachelor's Science in Nursing, and Liberal Arts in Psychology
vickimon your degree doesn't have to be related at all, you can have a degree in wine tasting for all they care :) If you want to teach in Asia, Id recommend doing online and classroom because they like people who have practical experience rather than just the online stuff.
Hi katie. I want to do TEFL but I need some guidance . Is there a test that you have to qualify to get addmision or you just pay the fee and do it? Plz do reply me .I am a teacher and want to do TEFL as soon as possible. Thanks
