Prescriptions for Tegretol known generically as carbamazepine far exceed indications established by the FDA. This drug offers some benefit in treating various forms of epilepsy, mania associated with the bipolar disorder and a nerve disorder known as trigeminal neuralgia. It only has a limited role in easing other types of neuropathic pain. Tegretol should not be used for simple or minor aches and pains.
A long list of other drugs may provide similar benefits to Tegretol with a reduced list of side effects. The drug has a unique role in trigeminal neuralgia often associated with lancinating attacks of pain on either the right or left side of the face.
Attacks may last only seconds and occur less often than once a day or up to dozens of times an hour. Tegretol works so quickly and predictably that the diagnosis should be doubted in the absence of a response.
Complications include suicidal thoughts, headache, blurred vision, bone marrow depression and damage to the heart, kidneys or liver. A genetic predisposition mostly present in those of Asian ancestry increases the risk of severe, life-threatening skin reactions.
